What an absolute stunner from The Hass. There is little more to say about it really. The portrait piece is a little bit similar in style to some of the recent pieces by Hazard, combining a photorealistic portrait with repetition and abstract ideas, and some interesting colour tones as well.

The more I look at the piece, the more I see. The incomplete portrait tricks your brain into completing it. It is quite incredible to think that this has all been painted with spray cans and not a paint brush in sight. I really don’t know how these guys do it. A masterpiece from The Hass.

4164. Elton Street (3)

Many of you will be familiar with the phrase ‘you snooze, you lose’, and so it was with my rather late discovery of this wonderful wall in Elton Street. Most of the pieces are is good shape, but unfortunately this beauty by The Hass had been somewhat tagged by the time I got to photograph it.

The piece, in the themed pink and blues used by all the artists on this wall, is a stunning portrait of a leopard., and a really classy piece of street art at that. I think I might have enough pieces by The Hass to pull together a gallery fairly soon, one to look out for.

4087. Upper York Street (26)

It is good to be posting a piece from Upper York Street… it has been a while, and even better that it is a thing of beauty by The Hass. this wonderful mural appeared a few months ago, but my first photographs of it were not at all good, so I have had to wait a while to get some new ones.

On the front of the Bristol Design Forge, this incredible skull is a great improvement on what was rather dreary and drab facade previously. The striking image is centred around the skull, and the patterned shapes cascading away create interest and colour to the whole wall. Another glorious production from The Hass, whose work really is out of the top drawer.

3918. Upfest 2021 75×75 (55)

I think I am right in saying that Paul Monsters is the only artist at Upfest’s 75 walls in 75 days event to have painted more than one wall, although I still haven’t posted his first collaboration yet. This is his second collaboration, and this time he has combined delightfully with The Hass.

The collaboration is painted on two sides of a building on Ashton Road, not far away from the Ashton Gate football stadium. The portrait, which looks a little bit like a self-portrait, is by The Hass, but the way it blends into the geometric patterns of Paul Monsters is what makes this a proper collaboration in my eyes.

The Hass is a super-talented artist who writes under another name for his graffiti pieces. The portrait has such amazing depth, with perfect use of different tones and shading to bring out the features and highlight all the wrinkles and contours of the face. A masterful piece of wall art.

It is quite unusual to see this colour combination used in the geometric work of Paul Monsters. More often he works with yellows, greens, browns, oranges and purples, but here he has gone for a rather more subtle colour palette which works really well on this particular space.

I am not too sure about the significance of the owl, but The Hass has absolutely smashed it. The owl appears to be wearing a little red cap, shared by the self-portrait, and I wonder if The Hass is the owl. Who knows? I’ll have to ask him next time I see him.

All in all, another outstanding wall in this summer series. We citizens of Bristol are a lucky bunch really.

3045. Cattle Market Road (4)

There aren’t really the words to describe how good this bull piece by The Hass is. The trip down to Cattle Market Road would be worth it for this piece alone. The bull, so the story goes, escaped from the cattle market (we are talking some years ago) and terrorised the locals until it was captured.

The Hass coordinated the gathering of five artists to decorate the hoarding around the development site at the back of Temple Meads station, and I have to say the collection is one of the highlights of the year so far, and this piece is the highlight of the highlights.

The composition and colours are utterly stunning and contrast so amazingly with the blue sky and piles of rubble behind the hoarding. I think that the buildings represent the old Post Office sorting office that was knocked down to create this brownfield development opportunity. The bull looks a little bit more like a Spanish bull rather than a British one, but I’ll forgive The Hass for that.

I don’t want to go overboard on a description, but rather just leave you to enjoy and study the piece for yourself. Magnificent.

2549. North Street

This is a lovely new shutter piece by The Hass on North Street. Unfortunately there is a bit missing on the left hand side which rolls down over the door, but shutters are difficult to get at the best of times so I was pleased to get this shot. The Hass paints under another name in Bristol, but those that know, know and those that don’t, don’t need to.

As a marine biologist I need little encouragement to marvel at this wonderful marlin swimming in waters close to a paradise island, looking a little bit like the island set in the Disney Pixar film The Incredibles. This time though the gorgeous waters are polluted with plastic bottles in amongst the fish. Nice piece combining abstract elements with realism and a great story.

1840. Upfest 2018 (81)

It wasn’t until Upfest this year that I discovered that I already knew The Hass, but under another name (there is a clue in the piece itself). It would seem that he has two street personas, one for his profession as a designer, and the other for recreation. I can tell you now that all of his work under whatever name is brilliant, and this piece is emblematic of that.

I am always going to favour an underwater scene and this one takes some beating. It really creates the impression of being under the sea, with the skylight creating a small shimmer at the top of the piece. There is a great story here, although it rather defeats me…the diver’s face looks like a carved pumpkin, but might be a skull.

There is a ship in a bottle that morphs into the diver’s helmet and octopus tentacles all over the place. Another nice touch are the goofy three-eyed fish from The Simpsons that also make it into Louis Masai’s coral reef piece from this year’s festival. There is another The Hass piece just off Park Street that I must photograph when I get a chance.
