It would be a bit of an understatement to say that I really like this piece. I don’t know what it is about it, perhaps it is the unique fills for each of the constituent parts of the letters NESK, or perhaps the freshness of an artist I am not familiar with. Probably a combination of the two.

The artist is Bazamataz (thank you, Paul H), and the colourful piece stands out brilliantly on the grey backwash and above the autumn-brown leaves. It all comes together so well and stands out a mile. The 3D drop shadow might be a little lost, and could have been a bit more prominent, but it is a small matter really. Wonderful work.

This is the second piece by Sworm that I have posted from this wall in the last couple of weeks, and although they were painted several months apart, I photographed both at the same time. While his first piece concentrated on the most extraordinary explosion of colour, this one turned the attention to the form of the letters.

Sworm paints only occasionally in Bristol, but it is great to see his work, because it is, in my view, really classy. The letters here are not uniform, but instead they blend in well together, filling all the gaps between them. The mid-line running through the letters and the subtle contrast in shades of cream create a lovely 3D effect. This is a really neat and tidy piece from a talented graffiti writer.

The Sparke Evans Park wall tends to look rather nice in the autumn and winter, with the browns and golds of the leaf litter beneath it. These colours provide a nice backdrop, and consciously or otherwise, this piece by Werm has picked up on those seasonal surroundings. The other good thing about this wall in the duller months is that it is possible to photograph it without shadows from trees being cast, resulting in horrible dappling.

The writing, spelling out WERM, is one of the best examples of bilateral symmetry in writing you are likely to see. The symmetry becomes even easier to make out because of the colour regimes Werm has selected, breaking it down into sections, thus making it easier for the eye to make comparisons. The dark green background is just right too. Nice work.

This is another one from my archive. I was actually digging it out because of the piece by Nice One, which is sitting above a Solar piece. It is impossible to post one without the other, and so you are getting two for the price of one in this post. Solar is a reasonable active member of the PLB crew, and it is not so long ago that I posted a gallery of his work. This is a nice letter blocky piece from him, and I think he painted the PLB letters too.

Nestled on top of the Solar piece, Nice one has painted his Times New Roman font letters spelling out his name. Midway through the letters is an interesting character, looking like somebody from an age gone by. The black and white character is really well painted and something of a nice surprise. I don’t think, although I can’t be certain, that the pieces were painted as a collaboration nor even necessarily at the same time. I can’t be sure either, who painted the brick wall with water flowing from a pipe. Curious stuff.

I think that May was a really busy month for street/graffiti art, the weather was pretty nice, and we had Upfest (Europe’s largest street art festival) in Bristol and I also had a trip to Leicester, so my May archive is still bursting at the seams with unpublished photographs of stunning art. One such piece that didn’t make it into Natural Adventures is this very special piece by Todoaciem.

The calligraffiti which Todoaciem specialises in makes a refreshing change from the more stereotypical pieces that I normally encounter, where the form and precision of the letters and the drop shadow are paramount. It looks like this stunner was painted on Todoaciem’s birthday during a birthday paint jam. What a great way to celebrate.

Funnily enough I met Sworm, a friend of Klashwhensober’s, when he painted this piece back in the summer, and somehow it has remained intact since. To be fair is is a really nice piece of writing, and has been respected for a long while. At the time of painting, I never got a photograph of the completed piece and only snapped it in November.

The jaunty letters spell SWORM, but it is the fills that delight the eye. A spectrum of colours, perhaps it was a dregs piece (the term used by artists for using up the dregs of a can), dance through the letters with a variety of inspired patterns. This is a most attractive piece of graffiti writing.

An emerging artist in Bristol that I am watching quite closely is Roma. I know nothing at all about Roma, and at this stage I have to be careful about assigning a gender to the artist, because I have made the unconscious bias mistake of assuming artists are male when in fact I have been quite wrong, most embarrassingly with T-Rex.

Roma has been painting some quite elementary letters, and you can see from the borders and highlight lines that can-control is a difficult skill to master, but Roma is making great progress in this area. The blended mixture of fill colours is effective, and I love the sprinkling of pink stars running horizontally through the piece. Definitely one to keep a close eye on.

The long wall at Sparke Evans Park always seems to have numerous really decent pieces, no matter when you go to visit. It is a little bit out of the way and rarely gets bombed with throw ups or tags. This piece by Figzzz was a vibrant and most memorable piece from my last visit to the park.

I have never encountered the artist’s work before and wonder if I am ever likely to again, but it has left an impression on me. The mushroomy theme has been superbly executed, with the pink fruiting bodies growing out of the letters spelling FIGZ in fat script writing. There are some nice decorations in the fill and a diagonal line running through the piece, creating more interest. Welcome to Bristol Figzzz.

Regular readers will know that I have a bit of a thing for Nips’ work. Her letters are uncomplicated and unpretentious and what sets her apart from other letter writers is her constantly evolving and creative fills.

Whether intentional or not, Nips has created a perfect autumnal piece. The blue background speaks of those wonderful high-pressure blue sky days (we have had a few of those lately) and the gold of the letter fills picks up the autumn leaves scattered at the base of the wall. The fills are a beautifully blended palette of four brown and yellow shades, and are further augmented with some complementary squiggles and dots. The tittle (dot on the i) is a little character face, something Nips does with most of her pieces. The whole thing is nicely finished with white highlights to help the letters pop. This is a fine piece of work from Nips.

This is yet another colourful outburst of joy and movement from Grimes, and a piece to enjoy and savour. Grimes has been smashing it with every piece he paints, and Bristol spots are without a doubt more colourful places when one of his pieces is present.

The three dimensional effect that Grimes creates in his work is outstanding, and this whole thing has the appearance of bursting out from the wall towards the viewer. Such is the energy in the piece it almost feels like an animation. The ‘fruit salad’ colours are beautifully distributed throughout the writing (Spelling GRIMES), and are set on a watery blue background, which is also full of swirling movement. In my eyes, this is a masterpiece of wildstyle writing.
