What a wonderful surprise it was to come across this outstanding collaboration from Hypo and Ulow. Regular readers will be familiar with Hypo, especially as he has been so productive over the last year or so, but Ulow’s appearances are rare these days, so this was a real treat.

This collaboration is out of the top drawer. Hypo’s super-colourful writing is as good as I have seen from him and has a touch of Hemper in its presentation and depth… praise indeed. Ulow has an incredible talent for painting the perfect graffiti characters, and his dancer on the right hand side of the collaboration matches the energy of Hypo’s writing. This is a supremely good piece, and one of my favourite collaborations so far this year. Bravo!

Anyone who reads these posts regularly will know that I consider Dibz to be one of the best wildstyle writers, in Bristol and indeed in the country. In this outstanding piece in Dean Lane he has combined his talents with the elusive Ulow, who treats us to his talents from time to time.

The letters, in a dazzling transition from yellow to dark red, spell out DIBZ. The letters are so clean and crisp, and the fades between shades so seamless, there are few words that can describe the expertise on show. Just to cap it all, the pink highlights at the bottom of some of the letters create the most fantastic 3D effect of reflected light. Just brilliant.

The character, I am guessing it is Wolverine, is by Ulow, and demonstrates his fantastic shading skills that give his pieces a soft, rounded appearance, almost organic. Ulow is definitely an artist whose street art work I’d like to see more of.

What a lovely collaboration between two artists that are highly regarded in Bristol, but whose work I don’t often get to see, Ulow and Hemper. The character on the left is by Ulow and is expertly painted. It is impossible not to marvel at the subtle shades he uses and the folds in the material – a sophisticated cartoon style character.

On the right is a wonderful piece of writing from the master Hemper. I wonder if he needed an extra foot of height on this wall. I have found it hard to find out too much about Hemper, but keep coming across his work from time to time. I have found the best way to find out more about the artists is through a serendipitous meeting while they are at work. This has not yet happened between me and Hemper, although it has with Ulow.

I have held on and held on to this collaboration for such a long time, because I was determined not to post it until I found out who worked on it with Dibz. Then I met Ulow a few weeks back (see my post about his Boba Fett piece) and was able to complete the puzzle.

The Dibz half of the collaboration was fairly easy to identify because I am familiar with his work and he sprays Dean Lane often enough for me to know his stuff when I see it. His writing here is very nice indeed and has quite a deep yellow border which sets it up beautifully.

The character half of the collaboration is by Ulow, and is something quite different. Set on a moody sunset skyline, a breakdancer entertains us with his contortions. The orange glow reflecting off the folds of his clothes is masterful work.

Like so many pieces at Dean Lane, this one didn’t last long, but it was a real peach.

There is a nice little story behind this piece. I made a special effort to get out to Raleigh Road, because I was aware of a new Soker piece that had been sprayed there the day before (post coming soon). Sitting adjacent to the Soker piece was this fine Boba Fett character piece.

I was taking pictures of the piece and thinking that I wasn’t familiar with the artist, when a man walking with his family stopped and asked me if my camera was any good. I thought he might be thinking of buying something similar. I replied that it was just a cheap and cheerful Samsung and that it took reasonable photographs. He then asked if I could send him the pictures I was taking of the Boba Fett piece…I must have looked confused, because he followed up his request by saying that he was the artist, and had finished it late the night before, and his pictures of it were a bit poor.

This is how I met Ulow, a local artist who from time to time sprays character pieces, and in this instance was contacted by Soker to join in. In looking up a little about Ulow I think I have at least two more of his pieces in my archive, and will have to dig them out and post them. I like this Boba Fett a lot, and especially like the way his helmet and body plates have scratches and reflect the light.

Sadly my pictures are nothing to write home about, but I sent him a whole bunch nonetheless.
