281. Muller Road

This mural is deep in Zase country. Many of his works are on show in the neighbourhood, and recently this commission for the local veterinary practice has brightened up an otherwise drab wall. I suspect that business may have improved too.

These animals are beautifully painted, which is what we have come to expect from Zase designs. The animals are incredibly realistic, but seem to have a slightly cheeky cartoonish character about them. This is an artist at the top of his game.

He has also painted one of his trademark wildstyle burners, but I am unable to decipher it. He has dotted the whole piece with the words ‘love’, ‘compassion’ and ‘care’. All in all it is a wonderful community piece, and a local landmark.

99. Gloucester Road, No.226

Many of the shops on Gloucester Road have commissioned street art on their shutters, which is how some artists have managed to make some money from their craft. This one caught my eye for several reasons.

The sad story is that this family run butcher shop ‘Stutt and Son’ that has been trading since 1919 has recently been closed at short notice due to the ill health of Mr Stutt senior. The hurriedly scrawled note on the shutter is heartbreaking.

The artwork is by Zase, but is clearly one of his early works as it is unsophisticated and rather raw, compared to some of his more recent pieces, such as the one in Ashley Road. He has come a long way.

As for the Butcher, the shop will be sold and another trader will move in, reinforcing the transient nature of a commercial high street.

73. Ashley Road (1)

Another huge and vivid mural appeared at the end of September by the Bristol based duo Zase and Dekor. I have seen the mural a few times, and it is truly stunning. It also occupies a fantastic spot, at a three-way road junction, and is seen by huge numbers of people every day.

The cheerful piece contains all the characteristics you would expect from the pair. Fabulous detail, a dream-like subject matter and Zase’s name taking centre stage. Some great photographs of its creation can be found here.

The mural is thought to feature Zase’s son, but beyond that Zase suggests that you simply have to make of it what you will.

36. York Street

The side of this house and the wall next to it have recently been given a wonderful makeover by Zase and Dekor. This is typical of the large murals we expect from this magnificent pairing. See their work in Cottrell Road, featured previously.

Typical of their work are the scale, vibrant colours and dream-like scenes. I am not too sure what this is about, but flight appears to be the central theme.

24. Cheltenham Road, the Arches

Zase v JPS

I don’t yet understand the ground rules or protocols that exist between street artists, but it would seem there is some minor conflict in a small passageway by the Arches on Cheltenham Road, Bristol.

An original mural by Zase adorned the side wall of Wong’s Acupuncture Clinic. This appeared before or during 2011. I only became conscious of the piece last year when I saw a wonderful JPS stencil entitled ‘Insert Punchline’ which covered the lower left hand side of the Zase work. Even at the time I saw it, part of the JPS had been sprayed over. Sometime later somebody added a rat and Banksy signature, but I doubt very much that it is an original.

I took a look at the wall last week, and it would seem that Zase has returned and restored the wall to its former status. It is a pity in a way, but at least I managed to get a picture of the JPS before it disappeared.

10. Claremont Road

Another large mural from Zase and Dekor just off the Gloucester Road in Bishopston.

I’m not sure how long it has been here, but I live nearby, and I can’t recall seeing it before.

I would love to know the backstory to this one. The wasps are beautifully sprayed and the movement in their wings cleverly portrayed. As usual we have the trademark Zase wildstyle signature taking up a large part of the piece, but not dominating it.

9. Cottrell Road

This is one of several spectacular murals by Zase in Bristol. Zase, originally from Slovakia now operates out of Bristol, and runs a business called Zase Design.

Most of his works are large and bold, and generally pleasing to the eye. The site of this mural is fantastic, and it will be seen by thousands of people heading for Tesco or Ikea every day.

Dekor is a French muralist specialising in photorealism. He often works on large murals with Zase. He also has interests in the hip hop culture for which Bristol is famous.

It is also great to see that, although it has been here for a few years, it has remained clean. It is also interesting to note that Zase’s contact address is also in Cotterell Road.

The marine theme and large scale make this a favourite.
