3678. Upper York Street (24)

To deliberately misquote a biblical phrase, ‘the Lord taketh away and the the Lord giveth’. The whole area of small businesses and light industrial units in the Upper York Street and Wilder Street area have been knocked down for new developments including housing and student accommodations, depriving street/graffiti artists from some premium walls. The gentrification programme is moving at pace and sweeping all around it aside.

It would appear that the developers of this block, which has been build with alarming speed during the coronavirus pandemic, have offered a small gesture that acknowledges the area’s street art heritage with this incredible mural from Gage Graphics. We know what an accomplished artist Ollie Gillard is and his outstanding murals can be found on private houses, restaurants and businesses all over Bristol. This is another fabulous addition to his portfolio that contributes to the whole Bristol USP thing.

The piece itself is a wonderful tropical paradise scene in which creatures of the forest admire a circus act being performed by a little mouse in the wooded foothills of a small mountain. Ollie Gillard transports us to a different place with this mural and there is so much detail to look at and admire. Well worth a visit, but does it compensate for the loss of the local street art walls, I guess only partially. It will be interesting to see whether this new build gets tagged and bombed, once all the hoardings come down.

3677. Brunel Way (101)

Every artist brings something different to the walls of Bristol, some high end world-class pieces, others quick and dirty throw-ups, but in between there is a vast contribution of different styles, subject and quality, which makes the whole scene so interesting. 3F Fino first entered my radar about a year ago in Cumberland Basin, and since then has hit walls all over  the city with his unique character pieces.

This column character piece picks up on a theme he has used a lot n his work, of partially hidden faces. I am not sure if this is a COVID-19 thing or totally unrelated to that, and maybe more to do with clandestine activity. This character has been popping up in central Bristol too, so watch this space for more posts from 3F Fino.

3676. North Street

Hurrah! It made my day when I saw this wonderful collaboration from Kid Crayon and Zubieta on social media, and I couldn’t get down to North Street fast enough. This boarded up shop front has had some fabulous pieces on it over the years, but has the disadvantage, from a photography point of view, of cars being permanently parked outside – an occupational hazard in Bedminster.

Of course I know Kid Crayon well, but this is the first time I have seen anything by Zubieta. The colours and style of the whole collaboration is very ‘Crayonesque’ but it is clear that the left hand side is by Kid Crayon and the right hand side by Zubieta. The theme would appear to be alcohol fuelled as both characters appear to be semi-immersed in a sea of booze. The Crayon character is wearing a trademark paper hat which is always nice to see.

Zubieta is an artist/designer based in Bristol but originally from Seville in Spain as far as I can make out. This is the first street piece I have seen by her, and what a perfect way to start alongside Kid Crayon. Zubieta’s character is a mermaid that seems to be equally happy with the alcoholic environment. This is a fun piece and it is great to see Kid Crayon hitting the streets again after a pretty long absence.

3675. Cumberland Basin

As I said in a post yesterday, I seem to keep bumping in to Eman, and this happened again at the weekend. I had made an excursion specifically to photograph this and another piece by him from a few days earlier, and guess what… he was in the same spot painting a new piece opposite this one. I think Eman rather likes this spot, which is nicely out of the way from the main drag.

The character piece is something that Eman has been working on and I believe he has created a sticker of it too. The character has a lot of charisma and is clean and simple on the black background. It is great to see a writer building on character skills. More to come from Eman.

3674. New Stadium Road (31)

This is one of several recent eye-catching pieces from Solar, who goes by the Instagram handle of @super.lunary. I only became aware of this rather special writer fairly recently, but I am enjoying the style very much.

The regular sized block letters are presented with some interesting free-form fills with strong colours and themes. The overall effect is rather calming and pleasing. It is interesting that different writing styles can stimulate different emotional responses, from calmness to anger to anxiety and so on, this is definitely at the gentle end of the spectrum. More to come from Solar soon.

3673. Brunel Way (100)

It is great to see that Eman is keeping himself very busy these days, and this is one of several recent pieces in the Cumberland Basin area. I think that Eman and I must be on the same time wavelength as I keep meeting him on my rounds, most recently this weekend just gone.

This piece is a writing/character combination is chrome with a blue and thin yellow border. The character is something that Eman is developing and concentrating on and seems to be a direction of travel he is enjoying. This is the first of several new pieces I will be posting from the artist, and is an excellent start.

3672. M32 Cycle path (125)

I had to take two attempts to get photographs of this wonderful piece of writing from Teao One along the M32 cycle path. When the sun is behind this wall (which seems to be most of the time), it darkens the wall and anything on it and because my photographic skills on my point-and-shoot camera aren’t up to scratch, I can’t accommodate very well for these challenging light conditions.

Fortunately the piece was very much intact when I returned. Teao One is something of a sleeping giant who has taken to writing again and is doing so in a way that seems to be making up for lost time. His style is utterly brilliant and his letters, fills and decorations very tight indeed. It is so good to have met him on a couple of occasions now and he seems like a really nice guy. Great new work from an old-timer.
