There is something rather special and unique about Dun Sum’s incredible creations. He doesn’t come into the centre of Bristol often, but when he does, his work always makes an impact. Often, Dun Sum will paint approximations of real creatures, but there is usually a bit of a twist, and sometimes complete fantasy. This chameleon, however, is identifiable as such, with only a little artistic cartoon licence.

Having had a household chameleon pet ‘George’ a few years back, I am rather partial to any piece representing the charming little lizards. There is plenty of charm and humour in this piece, something Dun Sum excels at, and great to see him paint on the roundabout for Hypo’s birthday paint jam.

2342. L Dub (3)

I am a huge sucker for any street art featuring a chameleon because my daughter has a beautiful panther chameleon called George, and he is really one of the most exquisite looking reptiles you could set eyes on. This is a piece by Dun Sum, an artist I’ve not encountered before, who seems to favour painting at L Dub. Looking at his Instagram account, it looks like he is a designer/illustrator by profession who does a bit of street art in his spare time.

This chameleon is wonderfully colourful and cleanly painted with a really interesting fill pattern – closely mirroring the kinds of patterns you find on these creatures. I rather like the additional concealed skull just behind its head. All in all a rather nice piece, and I’m sure not the last I’ll be featuring from this artist.

1022. Upfest 2017 (55)

I am always chuffed when I see pieces by Bristol artists at Upfest. The street/graffiti art scene here is so strong and it is great for the city to showcase its own artists to visitors from Bristol itself and from further afield.

Sled One, I have said countless times on Natural Adventures, is one of my favourite street artists and was very busy at Upfest, producing two pieces in South Street Park. I caught up with him for a while and asked him how it was that he doesn’t do so much street work these days. It turns out, and I think I knew this anyway, that he is now working with the Paintsmiths and doing a lot of commissioned work. This he says adds pressure on his free time. He also said it was a different way of doing things and that working to a brief can be quite stressful.

This wonderful piece is creative and utterly bonkers. I do like reptiles in street art, somehow they work so very well. The expression on the chameleon’s face is well observed, and the eye is excellent. Hope to see more of his stuff before too long. Perhaps those nice people at The Paintsmiths could give him some time off.

I pretty much walked past this small poster, but stopped in my tracks and took a closer look.

This is a really interesting wheatpaste by an artist called ’23 Magpies’. I think the artist is based in Gloucester, given that most of the works I can find are from there. My guess is that this was posted up during Upfest 2015, as it is only a short walk away from North Street. I have not been able to find out much about the artist, but some other works are shown here.
