There are some street artists who simply don’t appear to want to be followed, or at least that is how it seems, and it might be for a number of legitimate reasons. The first time I managed to pin down a name for this artist, he called himself j9449j on Instagram, followed by @Dr3amc0re94 and @all_4_n0thing, and now I can’t find him at all. My protocol for attributing artwork to artists who constantly change their names is to go with the first name I used for them, other examples include Slim Pickings (TES) and Biers (WD40).

The design of this piece and the colour palette are exquisite, with the chrome and bronze working perfectly with the black, white and turquoise. The abstract design carries, as always, a reflection of natural elements, such as leaves and grass, a feature of j9449j’s work. An attractive piece that is easy on the eye.

I sometimes wonder if anyone would notice if I stopped writing about the street/graffiti art pieces that I post, and simply presented the photographs, but then I have to remind myself that this blog is primarily for me and my mental health… that others might enjoy it is a joyous blessing. I cannot be certain that this vertically stacked pair are collaborative or simply adjacent. There are red drips running through both, but I think that has more to do with the lower piece by j9449j incorporating them into his piece.

The top piece is by Zed in the Clouds, an artist who is ridiculously underrepresented on Natural Adventures, a situation I simply must remedy. His combination piece contains the letters ZED and his trademark character. With the incorporation of the background the piece is literally zed in the clouds.

The lower piece is by an artist who seems to delight in changing his Instagram handle on a regular basis, making it rather difficult to know what to call him, so I stick with the first name I used, which is j9449j. Among his other monikers are Dr3amc0re94 and all_4_n0thing – this is someone who doesn’t want to leave much of a digital footprint like many other street artists. His letters, which I can never read, always have fills that I like to think have a natural emphasis with lots of leaves and plant shapes. This is a fine piece of writing that could so easily be dominated by the vibrant background, but actually complements it well.

My rather loose description of this spot, which I call River Avon, is actually a cycle/foot path that runs alongside the river from Sparke Evans Park to Temple Meads Station, where light industrial units back on to the pathway for most of its length. This piece by j9449j (or dr3amc0re94) is at the Eastern end of the pathway, and quite easily overlooked… I only spotted it on my return leg of my walk.

The joy of j9449j’s work is in its organic simplicity. I suppose you could class it as kind of anti-style graffiti writing, but it is perhaps a little bit more designed than that. As ever, I struggle to read the letters in this piece, so shall have to remain content with the fills and suggested vegetation. j9449j is an artist I am keen to meet – I have so many questions!

More and more these days, writers are stacking their graffiti writing, one piece on top of the other. I am not sure why they do this, perhaps it is all about proportions and wall space. Ultimately what it means is that you get two pieces for the price of one, and this double header is by j9449j (who keeps changing his handle on Instagram, so this will have to do) and Solar.

This spot is one I don’t get to all that often, but it is always worth it, because every time I have been recently, there has been something different on display. j9449j has painted some letters, which I struggle to decipher, but his organic and unique fills give away his identity. Solar, was recently the subject of a gallery I pulled together, and this anti-style writing flows beautifully, so typical of his work. A nice duo to stumble across.

The Bristol street art and graffiti scene is so broad that it welcomes all styles and all levels of talent. We get to see it all here. Some towns and cities in the UK embrace street art through holding festivals, but have no underlying culture 365 days of the year. While there is nothing wrong with that at all, what remains is a sanitised selection of high-end art, keeping the place pretty. Upfest provides us with a microclimate of high-end art in the Bedminster area, but the rest of the city is up for grabs, and I like it that way.

A great example of Bristol’s artistic diversity comes in the form of artists like j9449j, whose abstract fills are really quite unique. There is a wonderful organic feel to his work, with plant-like forms cropping up through the lettering. j9449j’s work feels quite ‘designed’, if you know what I mean, and although some of the borders could be a little cleaner, there is an element of anti-style that works well. This is a bright and colourful calming piece.

The artist formerly known as j9449j is obviously a person who enjoys anonymity, and has been incredibly hard to track down. I still know nothing about the artist, and just to add to the confusion, j9449j has changed their Instagram handle to @dr3amcore, this leaves me with the dilemma I have faced before which is do I stick with the first name I was familiar with or change to the new name. The convention on Natural Adventures is to stick with the first name unless the artist requests otherwise, so that is what I will do.

This piece was photographed back in January (I was doing a bit of archive-hopping), and features writing that I have struggled to read, but to me, it looks like “L I ? A T E R”, but I can’t make sense of that, so I must be wrong. Whatever the letters, the fill patterns are full of the wonderful plant shapes that typify work by j9449j. The colour palette is not my favourite, but in my view saved by the vibrant green/yellow flashes through the piece. I have many other pieces by the artist and hope to unearth them as the months and years go by.

This is a throwback piece to last June, which has remained dormant in my archives, because at the time of photographing the piece the artist was unknown to me. Since then, the artist’s identity has emerged and is known as j9449j, which is a bit of a mouthful. This is great news, because I have several more pieces in the archives to share and I really like their work.

The abstract piece hints at a rural landscape, certainly there are some organic forms in the piece. This artwork is so original, at least in the context of street art, that it is difficult to assess against any normal criteria or conventions. For example the small additional piece to the right works perfectly as a counterbalance to the larger piece on the left, There are some lovely shapes and patterns and a carefully thought out colour palette. Enjoyable and unusual stuff from j9449j.

This is a great occasion. I have been trying to find out who this artist is for absolutely ages (I know I am not alone) and at last their name ‘j9449j’ appeared as a tag on an Instagram post a week or two back, and we are no longer in the dark. What this also means is that I can release a whole bunch of their work from my archives which has been itching to be posted.

j9449j has a very distinctive collage style with plenty of shapes, symbols and plants, bound together with clever use of colour ‘patches’. The work is original and quite unlike anything else we routinely see in Bristol. How nice it would be to actually meet j9449j and find out more about their art, style influences and so on. This is the first of many posts (retrospective and future) I hope.
