5698. M32 Cycle path (240)

A couple of quick ones from Klashwhensober who has been keeping a steady flow of pieces coming off the conveyor belt through the whole of 2023, almost unrelenting. Through that time he has been exploring a lot of new ideas and improving along the way.

This one on the cycle path is really nicely finished, which can’t necessarily be said for all of his pieces. The eye is immediately drawn to the face in the middle of the ‘O’, which creates a strong focal point. The colours are interesting, and I am not sure I would have used pink against the orange, but it seems to work ok.

I find I have to combine pieces by Klashwhensober, because if I didn’t i would probably never post them such is the high volume of pieces he produces. This one is more in the classic style of the artist with strong black letters with blue patterning and drop shadows. The orange and yellow spotty background helps the letters to stand out a little. There is so much more to post from Klashwhensober, so watch this space.

I will never be able to keep up with Klashwhensober’s prolific presence around Bristol. Not only does he paint whenever he gets the opportunity, he also paints at all the regular spots and some of the out-of-the-way places too. I’m not sure I have seen him occupy this particular wall in Dean Lane before and it didn’t last for very long, so I am pleased I captured it when I did.

Without a doubt, this is one of Klashwhensober’s better pieces and he has smashed it on a premium wall and it doesn’t look in the slightest bit out of place. The bright yellow and grey letters stand out beautifully on the contrasting orange/red background. Great fill patterns and drop patterns too and the finishing is pretty much on point too. A great piece from Klashwhensober.

Klashwhensober is a force of nature, and his painting is his ‘rock’ in a turbulent environment. Over the last couple of years his work has been leaning towards quantity rather than quality (painting is what makes him happy), but recently I have noticed that that balance has shifted and he is starting to turn out some outstanding pieces, but fewer of them.

This is a wonderful and colourful piece at the farm end of the tunnel, spelling out SOBER. The letters each have an individual colour, with quite a lot of blended fills going on. The drop shadow is tidily done and lifts the letters from the wall a little. at the right hand end Klashwhensober has painted a sword, which is cutting into the letters. It looks like Klashwhensober has spent a little bit more time on this piece and has finished it off with care and attention. I like this more focussed approach from Bristol’s most prolific artist.

I might have to do a round up of Klashwhensober’s work soon to mop up several unpublished pieces by the artist from the summer. He is so prolific, I would struggle to post each of his pieces separately. This one under Brunel Way is deserving of an individual post though.

The colour selection for each of the letters might indicate that this is a dregs piece, using up half-empty cans, something you see quite a lot of. Each letter from the word SOBER has an element of depth, created by shading either side of a ridge line. The ‘O’ in particular has an anamorphic quality to it. This is a nicely worked piece from Klashwhensober. He might have left the spot a little tidier after painting though.

In my experience it is unusual to find a Klashwhensober collaborative piece, so this one painted with Bean was a bit of a treat. The letters, spelling S BER, by Klashwhensober, have been augmented with a fabulous cartoon character by Bean, replacing the ‘O’.

Altogether the whole piece is a lot of fun, and is a coming together of two artists who are rather busy with their painting at the moment. Klashwhensober’s letters are filled with a gentle blend of red and pink set on a lilac background. Bean creates some wonderful cartoon characters in a style that is both beautifully finished and recognisable. This is a wonderful collaboration from the two artists.

I bumped into Klashwhensober yesterday, the first time for a couple of months, and talked to him about these recent pieces from Dean Lane, and he told me that all three had been tagged, which is a bit disappointing, but at least I managed to get clean shots of them.

The blue and red split piece is another example of how Klashwhensober’s work has gone up a level recently. The two colours contrast really well, and the fill patterns reflect one another perfectly. Klashwhensober has also put in some shading on the letters to add a bit of depth. Where the colours meet, the letters appear to crumble into fragments. This is a fun and accomplished piece, and alongside his other two works demonstrates his versatility.

Although I am not certain, I think that all three pieces were painted in a very short space of time, perhaps in the same day. This second piece, in chrome, again spelling SOBER, is much flatter than the first one. Without the decoration the piece would be in danger of being a bit plain, but Klahwhensober doesn’t do plain, so he has added some purple cloudy frills and a wispy red ribbon running through the letters.

Finally, an orangee throw up completes the set, and although obviously a quick one, it is still finished nicely. I imagine that he was running low on orange paint, as it is fairly transparent in places. Altogether, a good display of the talent on offer from the always prolific Klahwhensober.

There has been a noticeable uptick in the quality of Klashwhensober’s work recently, and it feels like he has reached a new level. He is certainly broadening his horizons with letter styles and the introduction of ever-more sophisticated characters accompanying his letters.

In this recent piece from Dean Lane, Klashwhensober has gone for a simpler, smoother letter style which is very tidily finished. The fills of turquoise and orange blend well and are an eye-catching combination. The three little toadstools with faces on the right are a curious addition to the piece. Great work from Klashwhensober.

I am writing this late last night, because my son and I are taking a trip to Perugia tomorrow morning and want to leave before it gets too hot. Klashwhensober is no stranger to these pages, but doesn’t appear as much as he should, I hope this post addresses this somewhat.

His letters spelling ‘Sober’  are written in the most beautiful colours transitioning from green to blue.  The letters are nicely defined, and towards the middle of the piece, there is a little face in a bubble. This is a nice tidy piece from Klashwhensober.

I met Klashwhensober shortly after he had ‘repaired’ this piece, which speaks volumes about how much the artist cares about his work. I know how important graffiti writing is to Klahwhnsober, nourishing him and providing a strong focus in his life.

This outstanding  piece in the dark, sooty underpass shows Klashwhensober at his artistic best. Beautifully crafted letters with a stripy 3D drop shadow are filled with beautiful complementary colours and some ‘meteors’, leaving a trail in the lilac section. Another day and another fine creation from a lovely artist.

5136. Cumberland Basin

Klashwhensober continues to paint frequently, and in as many spots as he can find. These two pieces are from Cumberland Basin, in slightly different places. The first piece, on a virgin wall, is rather noticeable as it is on the side of one of the buildings that have something to do with the lock gates into the Floating Harbour. Definitely an edgy spot.

I was fortunate enough to catch up klashwhensober while he was painting this rather nice blue piece. Strangely, this was our second encounter in two days, after a long period when our paths didn’t cross at all. We got talking a lot, and it turns out that we have more in common than we might have thought, including attendance at the same school in London, although at completely different times.

The piece itself is fairly straightforward, spelling SOBER with nicely defined letters and plenty of designs in the fills. There are no ‘explosive’ elements in the writing, which has been a bit of a trend recently, but it is nicely done nonetheless.
