It is funny how you can miss things. This is a piece in The Bearpit by Laic217 that he did a little while back, but which I hadn’t seen because it is on a different approach than the one I normally use.
It is an interesting piece because it is overtly critical of stencil art. It is quite unusual to see this kind of commentary about artists by artists, but obviously it is something Laic 217 feels strongly about. On his Instagram feed he says he hates stencil graffiti, and when pressed says that in his opinion it is cheating and being lazy. Only free hand for Laic217. It is not a sentiment I necessarily agree with.
The piece itself is a bit surreal and menacing…I guess that is the intention. Laic217 does like the use of skulls in his pieces and has a dark side to many of his pieces. It is possible that he is trying to be humorous in this piece, but I don’t think it quite makes the mark. Nonetheless, I like the artwork from this very busy artist.
Well here is another weekly dose of Laic217. This piece is from a short while back and can be found at the city farm end of the St Werburghs tunnel, although turnover there is so rapid that it might have gone by now.
This piece bears some resemblance to his larger work in the Dean Lane skate park, and has something of the grotesque about it. Drug culture seems to play a large part in Laic217’s pieces and it looks like this pink individual is smoking weed. Not the most beautiful piece you will see, but all part of the broad and imaginative portfolio of this artist.
No prizes at all for guessing who this is by. Hardly a week goes by without posting something by Laic217. This piece is a bit of a throwback to his format of spelling his name and incorporating a feature piece into it. Most of his recent works have been distorted portraits.
Looking back at some of his similar pieces from about a year back, it is easy to see how his work is constantly and consistently improving. The fiery flame work is nicely done in this piece, and he really does seem to enjoy his skulls.
Regular readers of these posts should have no difficulty in identifying this artist as Laic217. This is the sixth piece I have featured by the artist since the beginning of February, and I still have a couple more in the queue.
Back to his bucket hat character and distorted face. The Smilie is sprayed in a 3D viewer style, and with the pixelated shirt fragments around the character’s shoulders, the whole amounts to a rather ‘trippy’ piece.
I have said a number of times recently that I am really enjoying witnessing the development of this Bristol artist who has still managed to remain rather aloof. Googling ‘Laic217’ simply brings up loads of my images. Perhaps I should try and contact him for an interview.
There is absolutely no stopping Laic217 at the moment, and there is more to come, I know he has just done two new pieces at the time of writing this post. This work is a character piece which plays of his theme of distortions and presents us with a fairly ugly weird face.
This feels like the visions experienced on a bad trip. Monstrous to say the least. Of all the Bristol street artists, I would say that Laic217 is the one who is developing his technique most at the moment. I’m not sure where he finds the time to do all this work, but it is fairly typical for artists to have productive phases and quiet phases, often related to work or travel.
I had a bit of trouble photographing this piece as the low sunshine was casting a shadow across the bottom portion of it. It will be great when the Summer begins as the sun tends to be higher in the sky and there are fewer shadows to ruin the photographs.
Such is the prolific nature of Laic217, I am having real difficulty keeping up with his work that just keeps popping up all over Bristol. It seems to be about one a week at the moment, which is kind of crazy.
This piece is in a quiet side road off Stokes Croft, a site frequented by Epok and Deamze, but this sits comfortably in their company. Laic217 gathers several of his regular themes into one with this piece, the acid house influence, the toking smilie, the bucket hat, the skull and the brick wall.
He posted his black book draft of this piece on his Instagram feed, and the only variation from the draft is the colour of the LCD display, which was lilac in the draft. Much better as green. More to come form the busy Laic217. I forgot to say how much I like this piece…there I’ve said it now.
More from the incredibly prolific Laic217. This time the piece is in a major ‘hotspot’ where it can be seen by a great many cars and passers-by. He returns to one of his favoured motifs, the distorted/disfigured face with hat and references to acid. Also he has incorporated his liking for brick walls, which works really well here.
Another feature of this work is the reference to the test card transmission – something that TV viewers over a certain age will be very familiar with. One of the most pleasing things about this particular site is that the rather officious notice that was plastered over one of Aspire’s pieces here has been completely sprayed over – a victory for graffiti art.
It doesn’t stop here, still more to come from this artist who is really beginning to make his mark.
Ok, I’ll admit it, I am having a bit of a thing about Laic217’s work at the moment, and it won’t stop here. We see him once again experimenting with a figure distorted behind broken glass. There is a story here, the heart shape in the hole in the glass betrays that much. Laic’s faces and figures inhabit that territory between realism and cartoon, very much the province of street artists, where walls and boards provide the canvass.
This is a haunting piece, and lacks the humour and lightheartedness of many of his pieces, but it is intriguing and different and sets itself apart. Not to everyone’s taste I am sure, but I so much enjoy finding his works.

This is another happy piece by Laic217 in St Werbergs tunnel. It takes the typical form for his pieces of some wildstyle writing and a character. This time the character is a smiley face wearing what appears to be a bucket hat/spaceship. It seems that much of Laic217’s work is influenced by acid house culture.
The piece was located towards the north end of the tunnel on the farm side, and was not too badly affected by the terrible photographic conditions in the tunnel. If you want to see more of Laic217’s style, then simply type ‘Laic217 Bristol UK’ into google images, and you will get a feel for what he is all about. I like this piece
