6736. City Road (14)

Every now and again, I like to delve into my archives to see if there are any pieces that somehow were overlooked at the time, and I am always surprised by what I find. The next few posts are from 2016 and include this beautiful magpie by Aspire.

Aspire was one of my favourite Bristol artists in Bristol, and his depictions of birds in particular struck a chord with me as a trained naturalist. For a few short years, his work brightened up our streets before he packed his bags and moved to London, where I am told the streets are paved with gold. Fortunately, Aspire does return from time to time, but I miss his portfolio of stunning birds and their surroundings. As well as being a superb portrayal of a magpie, we also see evidence of his pixel clusters, something of a trademark for the artist. Those were the days!

6645. Coach and Horses

Today I am off to a valley in the Atlas Mountains, and wrote this last night after a very long day doing a lot of walking. So today’s posts will be quick ones like yesterday and might not be very coherent. This is the third piece in a superb collaboration between Sled One, Smak and Misc, whose stunning heron clutching an eel in its bill is wonderful.

I don’t know Misc, but believe he painted a couple of pieces on this particular trip to Bristol. The stylised natural history piece is amazing and really captures the struggle between the fish and the bird. I would like to see much more work like this, as it is right up my street.

6587. Jamaica Street (29)

Zubieta, Jamaica Street, Bristol, November 2024
Zubieta, Jamaica Street, Bristol, November 2024

This was my second attempt at photographing this piece by Zubieta, just outside the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft. The first time I came, there were significant shadows across it, and some people sitting on chairs in front of it – all quite unhelpful. The piece is painted on the PRSC blanket and tent exchange, which in itself tells a story of the times we live in.

Zubieta is a muralist whose work often encompasses nature, particularly floral scenes. I think she uses brushes to paint her murals, rather than spray paints. This decorative piece includes some pink flowers with lips in the centre, a caterpillar, a heart and a figure, and many of the leaves contain beady eyes. The content of the work is not so different from Peggy, but the styles are worlds apart. A nice piece enhancing an otherwise utilitarian storage facility.

  • With many thanks to Katy from the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust who was kind enough to take my team at work on a tour of this magnificent reserve. Alas, we saw no beavers, but plenty of evidence of their activities.
