6933. St Werburghs tunnel (498)

Jest Soubiquet, St Werburghs, Bristol, May 2025

Jest Soubriquet is an artist with several ‘noms de plume’ such as Jest Likes and Likes Wan Tu or Likes 12, which makes things horribly difficult for my tagging his pieces, which is why I stick with the first name I came across… it just makes things simpler for me.

This is another of his wonderful colourful patchwork portraits, and probably the best I have seen so far. The highly stylised portrait features a pouting woman whose face and hair are splashed with some delightful colours, and yet somehow appears to be completely normal – if that makes sense. I mean, nobody actually looks like that, but our brains compensate for the unusual colours and presents a normal portrait – clever things brains. Clever art from Jest Soubriquet.

I often comment about artists who paint in a particular style, and ask myself whether they could do something completely different, marking them out as a versatile artist. Well, Bean has gone the full mile with this portrait piece that couldn’t be further removed from his usual cartoon characters.

I have to say I was quite flabbergasted when I saw this, and admire Bean even more than I did before. I knew he was clearly very talented, but this portrait takes my view of him to another level. I hope he will be painting in Bristol more over the Summer months, and will wait to see what other hidden talents he has in his locker.

Corupt, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

This bold piece by Corupt is in the darkest part of the St Werburghs tunnel, and I had to do a little bit of brightness and colour manipulation to bring out the best in these photographs. The tunnel is a great street art/graffiti spot, especially in wet weather, but the light conditions can make photography very challenging at times.

This is a really beautifully presented Chrome piece, spelling out STICK, set on a pink background, with a fine red line outside the thicker black border, a design element that is a bit of a signature of the artist’s work. There is something rather unusual and appealing about his letter style. Great piece if you can actually see it in the gloom.

Mr Draws, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

This is an interesting wall at the entrance to St Werburghs tunnel. It is a space that can be filled with one or two or even more pieces, because of its length. There is a bit of a difficulty with the full length pieces, like this beauty from Mr Draws, and that is there is quite a bit of street furniture in the way that makes it a little challenging to photograph.

The spot also suffers from shading on sunny days, so being there at the right time is quite important. On the day I took these pictures, it was dazzlingly bright, indicative of the remarkable spring we are enjoying. Mr Draws has written his joined up letters DRAWS with a very nice horizontal striped fill pattern of magenta, turquoise, blue and yellow, which works remarkably well. The letters are broken up with a shower of ‘leopard’ spots, which offer a really interesting texture to the piece. There are some nice drips too. This is a really good large piece from Mr Draws, no messing.

Mr Klue, St Werburghs tunnel, Bristol, April 2025

Mr Klue has been on fire this year and has continued to paint his ephemeral pieces in the tunnel on an alarmingly regular basis. In my view, this is a very good thing indeed, because I like his unique style, and watching him paint gives me an appreciation of how deliberate each ‘brush stroke’ is in his pieces. His work may look random, but it is based around the form of the letters KLUE, and the shading and colour patterns are carefully thought through.

As far as I can make out, Mr Klue paints each piece in a freestyle way, meaning that he doesn’t paint from a black book, but rather from the heart in a well-rehearsed, but improvised way, if that makes sense. The white and lavender colours gives this one a lightness of touch, and the subtle lime green tints on some of the edges, adds depth and rounds things off nicely. So much more to come from Mr Klue.

This is a delightfully clean and crisp piece by Werm, whose symmetrical pieces are a well known sight in the various graffiti spots around Bristol. I particularly like this one with its delightful colour scheme, and the boldness of it set on a white background.

It is well worth getting up close and taking a proper look at the letter fills in this piece, the overall colour is a blend of reds from dark to light, and running through the midline is a wonderful continuous orange line… a golden thread through the piece. This is a very attractive piece by Werm, that unfortunately only lasted a short time.

Foxymoron, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

This fox is one cool dude, loitering at one end to St Werburghs tunnel, either watching the world go by, or up to some kind of mischief, it is difficult to know for sure.

Foksymoron has definitely upped his game in recent months, and is beginning to add more detail to his character as it develops. The sunglasses are always present, but his selection of clothes is becoming more sophisticated, and the inclusion of a bit of hair underneath the cap is definitely a new idea working its way into his work. It is always great to watch on as artists try new things and push their boundaries.

Mr Klue, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

I am writing this from a tired Travelodge in Warrington, having watched Arsenal lose to PSG in the second leg of the Champions League Semi Final in an equally tired and slightly empty Irish Pub. I have had a long day, and still have this blog post to write. At least I am writing about this fabulous Mad Hatter piece in the tunnel by Mr Klue.

I think Mr Klue painted this as a bit of an extra, after he has finished another piece that I watched him complete. He is on a roll this year and has been churning out some great pieces. I particularly like these little characters that he paints and I have seen several of them over the years. This character is a little more solid than his ephemeral abstract writing and manages to convey a certain amount of mystery and intrigue.

I am always reminded when I see this character, of a wonderful double LP that me and my sister had as children, which was a musical version of Alice in Wonderland, and thanks to the Interweb, here is a picture of it. Try and find an online version to listen to, you won’t regret it.

DFC1848, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

It is always a pleasure when DFC1848 comes to visit, and sometimes I even manage to catch up with him, but unfortunately not on his most recent visit, during which he dropped a few pieces about the place, including these ones.

He has become an accomplished character painter, coming up with a raft of different cartoon-style creatures for us to enjoy. I’m not sure what this little fellow is, a beaver? A meerkat? It doesn’t really matter. The animal is holding up a placard which simply reads ‘smile’. Unfortunately, yellow text on a white background is a real ‘no no’ in the world of communications, as for many people it is difficult to pick out the writing.

Not content with his first creature, DFC1848 also painted a ‘sticker’ character a few yards away, for good measure. Decent fun stuff.

6859. St Werburghs tunnel (489)

Kool Hand, St Werburghs, Bristol, April 2025

This piece by Kool Hand was part of a recent collaboration in the tunnel, but alas his third only lasted about 24 hours. On the upside I was fortunate enough to see it, literally moments before it was painted over by Mr Klue.

I have said it before, but Kool Hand is a bit of an unsung hero of Bristol street art. His unique blend of colour, characters and writing is a central part of the heartbeat of the Bristol scene, without which it would feel diminished. The letters KOOL and nicely presented in very Kool Hand orange, with some great solid fills and spots. The background in softer purples and blues provides a perfect counterbalance to the graffiti writing. Nice work from Kool Hand.
