It is always great to see a new Tom Miller piece, and this is a wall he has favoured in the past. I can’t keep up with this particular wall, and have some pieces that have never made it to the blog. Maybe if I was retired…

This work has all the hallmarks of a Miller piece; body parts bursting with a suffusion of colour and ‘imaginite’ – the way thoughts might look if they could be painted. There is a little story going on here, chasing after love perhaps. I would like to think it is a happy picture and not a morose or sad one. I really am a big fan of Tom Miller’s work.

620. Stokes Croft, the Carriageworks (22)

A recent piece by Tom Miller in one of his favourite locations, the arches at the Carriageworks in Stokes Croft. This is a much calmer piece that we are used to from this artist whose surreal style challenges and provokes us. Not so much of the frenetic stuff flying about the place, but we do see a merging of body parts, in this case a hand and the head.

It is no secret that I am an admirer of Miller’s work, and have been from the first piece I saw at the same location back in December 2015. This piece plays on ideas, dreams and imaginings…light shining down from an umbrella. All very odd, but interesting to look at. The figure is set against a black background which gives the whole piece a clean appearance.

I am very glad that I photographed it when I did, even with the van parked right up against it (illegally I might add) because a day or two later it had been tagged and defaced. Pity.

597. James Street (1)

Once in a while, you feel that you might be witnessing something rather special, and so it is with the art of Tom Miller. I would be the first to concede that his surrealist style isn’t to everyone’s taste, but what he has to offer, both on canvass and on walls, is very different, refreshing, challenging, intelligent, busy and bright. I think and hope he will go a long way.

I am not entirely sure what the piece is depicting, but it looks a little like Buddha with a whole load of things going on around him and a rather nice little hut ion his head for a hat. Miller’s pieces are always bursting with energy and weirdness. Lots of body parts and face parts adorn his subjects. There is meaning to all of this I’m sure, but it is probably deeply rooted in the artist’s sub-conscious.

562. Richmond Road (2)

I took a stroll in Montpelier a little while ago and visited some streets I have not been to before, and some others that I haven’t been to for a long while. I was very pleased to find this Tom Miller piece on Richmond Road, and although it has been quite heavily tagged, it still conveys loads of movement and emotion in the world of Miller’s ‘imaginite’.

It is a pity I didn’t get to see this when it was clean, as I love this fine artist’s street work. I love the way Miller’s works spew out colours in all directions – an enjoyable confusion. As an observation, you can see that one of the tags is by Whysayit, a local graffiti artist.

430. Upfest 2016 (46)

One of the best things about my personal journey into the world of graffiti art and street art has been the discovery and continuing observation of Tom Miller. Tom is a fine artist who has turned his hand, like many others, to the street and with stunning results.

This work was produced for Upfest, and I managed to catch him just as he was signing the piece. Some great shots, but my intrusion came at the expense of a film maker who has been following Tom for a couple of years…I got in the way a bit…oops.

Tom’s work is centered around his construct of ‘imaginite’ which is, I think, the idea of capturing the mind’s thoughts in art. A fabulous concept, and one that draws heavily on the Surrealist movement. I just love his work and this is a beauty.

267. Stokes Croft, the Carriageworks (13)

On my return from a short break away from Bristol a week ago, I was welcomed home with this typically bizarre and busy piece by Tom Miller.

His works often include details of facial features, and an eye and mouth are the prominent features here. His works are visceral and organic, and you see different details each time you look at them. He talks about his style using the created word ‘imaginite’ which describes what metaphysical imagination would look like in solid form.

His works tend to be much more in the fine art category than ‘street’ but he has been masterful in transitioning between the two. There is something about his pieces that sets the pulse racing…an overload of colour and strangely warped familiarity. Dreamlike.

216. Stokes Croft, the Carriageworks (9)

This beguiling piece by Tom Miller appeared last weekend and has already now been painted over, and even when I took this picture a day after it was completed, it had already been tagged. I love Miller’s work, but I have reservations about this one. There is something in me that is slightly uncomfortable about using street art used to promote anything, even your own exhibition.

I have many pictures of street art in Bristol which promote night clubs or special evenings of music etc, but I don’t post about them. They are deliberately ephemeral and are usually not quite up to the standard of other work. There is less love about them…they become perfunctory.

This I think is a case in point. Miller’s work is usually of such a high standard, and this feels just a little bit rushed. I look forward to seeing the gallery, but look forward more to seeing a more considered Tom Miller piece in the near future. Does that sound harsh?

158. The Bearpit (8)

It is Easter Sunday today. I wish you a happy day. This is a recent piece by the extremely prolific Tom Miller. It can be found on the south tunnel end wall of the Bearpit, which is the exact site of another of his recent works featured here.

His ‘imaginite’ concept is in full flow here, combining hard reality with soft imagination. I find his works counselling, and am always excited when I discover a new piece such as this one.

Probably more accustomed to a gallery wall, it looks like Miller really enjoys creating his street pieces.

147. Stokes Croft, the Carriageworks (4)

So Tom Miller has been busy once again, as have many other street artists. Quite a few new works are appearing around Bristol at the moment, and I think that the better weather combined with weekends is seeing a lot of popular walls getting a refresh.

This is another wild and wonderful piece from Miller and beautifully combines the material world with dream like unreality. As I have said before, I am a fan. This work replaces one by Silent Hobo that I wrote about back in December 2015. It is a worthy replacement, but I am very pleased to have captured its predecessor.

I love his ‘Imaginite’ concept, and have always been a fan of the surrealists. His works look a bit like Yves Tanguy meets Jackson Pollock with some Magritte thrown in…or something like that.
