After quite a long fallow period, Awkward has popped up once again, spurred on by Benjimagnetic, it would appear. His character pieces are so distinct and have a slightly sinister quality to them, with crazy big eyes, a skeletal nose and zigzag line mouth.

The blue-faced character looks like he is wearing a Cheech Wizard hat, the character created by underground comic artist Vaughn Bode, and firm favourite with graffiti artists. The speech bubble contains the word Awkward and performs the role of signature for the piece, as if a signature is needed for Awkward’s work. A lovely piece.
Although he has had a relatively quiet winter, Noise has woken up for the Spring and is starting to make his presence felt once more. This is a wonderful big bold piece of graffiti writing and is set in a Vaughn Bode landscape.

It is customary for most graffiti writers at some point in their ‘career’ to pay tribute to the American underground cartoonist who was active in the 1960s and 70s, and Noise has done so with a fabulous Cheech Wizard on the left and a scattering of toadstools along the base of the piece. Nice work.
What a fine way to mark a century of posts from Sparke Evans Park, with this immaculate piece of graffiti writing from Raid. Since his arrival in Bristol, about 18 months ago, Raid has consistently turned out great pieces, with an emphasis on the intricate and colourful letter fills, and he has produced another cracker here.

In addition to the writing, which is set on a purple, diamond-shaped background and some flames, Raid has included a ‘Screw’ character from Vaughn Bode’s imagined universe. I am wondering if the character is an artefact of a piece that was there before (I should know this), and Raid has incorporated it into his work. The edges and sharpness are not consistent with his tight style. Another fine piece from Raid – I’ll have to update his gallery, as they just keep rolling in.
The anti-aircraft gun emplacement at Purdown, is a bit of a hit and miss spot (no pun intended). Sometimes when I go up there, there have been no new additions, other times I seem to find a raft of new work. It is always a bit of a practical struggle for me, because I take the dog along (of course), and he gets very excited in this enclosed area because of the goats – I have to be swift taking pictures and move on, before he gets too frenzied.

I’m not sure how old this piece by 3GV is, but I don’t recall seeing it before this visit I made last month. 3GV has bookended his letters with a tribute to Vaughn Bode, with Lizard to the left and Cheech Wizard on the right. The irregular letters, with a cool colour palette, are set on a blue diamond shaped background. I feel that 3GV’s work is quite raw, but it is great to see the artist out there practising and improving.

I am not sure that I have seen this wall painted as much as it has been over the last year or so, not just painted, but painted with so many high-quality pieces. This recent collaborative piece is by Fade, Dibz, Awkward and Noise.

The left-hand end of the wall is collaborative combination from Fade and Awkward. Starting with the latter, I think that this is the most extensive bit of work I have seen from him, with so much more than his usual mega-tag face. Here Awkward has included a complete character as well as some woodland beasties and flowers, with loads of little details. The character is wearing a Cheech Wizard hat and surreptitiously holding a spray can. Fade has painted some beautifully finished letters, acting as a central platform for Awkward’s decorations.

The middle section is by Dibz with a combination of outstanding writing and a couple of characters… a Vaughn Bode Lizard and another masked character whose name I don’t know, both faithfully reproduced. There have been a whole ton of Vaughn Bode inspired pieces lately, and I guess it is a theme from World Wall Stylers or something like that.

Rounding off the wall and sticking with the colour theme, Noise, who seems to be enjoying a spate of collaborations, has produced another of his NOISE pieces composed of dense letters with stunning fills and transitions. Awkward makes another appearance with a character peeping over the ‘S’ along with a couple more woodland bugs. Altogether a wonderful piece from the foursome.
I feel that I have almost exhausted superlatives when describing Kosc’s work, and this piece leaves me scratching around for something to say that isn’t already clichéd in some way. How about this: Kosc is a great artist who has painted a fascinating and touching tribute to the American cartoon artist and graffiti-world favourite Vaughn Bode.

The writing alone is worthy of praise, but it is the Cheech Wizard and Lizard characters that augment the letters so well and bring the whole piece alive and straight into the crazy world of Vaughn Bode. Kosc is on a roll and just seems to get better and better, and this is a truly masterful piece.

Sometimes you see a piece, and it takes your breath away… this was one such piece. Absolutely everything about it is perfect, and it is, by some margin, my favourite piece of the year so far. In case it wasn’t obvious, it is a collaboration between Saor and Andy Council – not something I saw coming, but their styles very well together.

Starting with the buffed wall – If you’re going to do a serious statement piece it is always worth buffing the wall with an appropriate colour and the grey in this instance works well with the overall colour palette. The subtle soft pinks, maroons and greys are bought to life with some bright and vibrant greens, classy stuff indeed.
The writing is by Saor and is as ever so crisp and tight – no thick borders, only sharp edges. The character, a Vaughn Bode lizard, is by Andy Council and true to his composite style, is made up of pipes, vents and architecture, including the Clifton Suspension bridge all stitched together. This is a masterpiece collaboration by two brilliant artists.
In the past couple of months, Cheo has hit the accelerator and is painting with the frequency he was before Covid19 struck. Until this summer, he was painting very rarely, and went almost a year without hitting a wall, apart from perhaps the Ropewalk. Now it is quite a different tale and the giant appears to have woken from his slumber.

This outstanding piece, a tribute to the great Vaughn Bode with Lizard and Screws characters, was created during the recent paint jam in the tunnel, alongside, amongst others, Inkie and Goldie. It was certainly a special day, and I imaging that the pieces will be there for quite some time before getting tagged and eventually overpainted.

Cheo’s piece is so rich in colours and the depth he has created with shadings is quite remarkable. The characters are snappily dresses and have got to work with spray cans and marker pens to create some of their own street art. This is artwork of the highest calibre, and reminds us of what we have missed during the prolonged hiatus in his work. More to come from Cheo.
Kid Krishna has had a quiet couple of weeks, which means that I can catch up on some of his pieces, although there is so much happening at the moment, it is never easy to catch up on anything. This is a bright, happy piece from Kid Krishna, featuring elements of the Wizard from Vaughn Bode.

I can’t really express how good I believe this piece to be. It is clean, tight, cryptic and joyful, and since Kid Krishna appeared on the Bristol scene about 18 months ago, he has been turning out pieces like this one with extraordinary regularity, and in doing so, really pushed the boundaries with his unconventional style.
Cheo has definitely woken up from a reasonably long quiet period, and it would appear that his friend and painting collaborator Dibz has ha something to do with it, at a guess. The two have combined to create this wonderful picture-frame piece featuring a Vaughn Bode lizard by Cheo and tight writing from Dibz.

The influence of Vaughn Bode on the graffiti art scene has been quite extraordinary, and continues to be as vibrant now as when the artist himself was alive. Che’s lizard is perfectly drafted with a lot more perspective and depth than some renditions I have seen. The bee, of course, is lovely too. Dibz has gone for some rather more basic writing than we are used to seeing, but it is just so perfectly executed, flawless I would say. This is a very good collaborative wall from two of Bristol’s finest artists.
