It is good to see that Whysayit (YSAE) has settled into a pattern of writing reasonably regularly, and in doing so has managed to creep his way back onto the pages of Natural Adventures, which is a good thing. I believe that this piece might have been painted during a paint jam for Solar, but that is simply guesswork.

Whysayit’s unruly letters are always nice and curvy, nothing sharp or angular about his work at all. There are three discrete horizontal fills and a delightful pink shadow to round things off. Nothing too showy, simply good graffiti writing. It is interesting to see where his heart lies with the phrase “I’d rather do a Tipex tag…”

I first came across Whysayit (YSAE) a few years ago when he regularly collaborated with Kleiner Shames. Although I have never met him, I have enjoyed his irregular anti-graffiti style over the years, and this one under the M32 is a banger.

The organic writing is simple, spelling out ‘YSAE’ in two tones of pink. Light pink for the letters and dark pink for the drop shadow. Combine these with a black border and white highlights, and you have straightforward, quality writing which lifts nicely off the wall. Sometimes less is more.

4553. Greenbank (47)

You might recall that almost two weeks ago I posted a piece by Whysayit, commenting that I haven’t seen much of his work in recent years. It would seem that he is becoming a little more active, and this is one of two pieces by the artist on the Bristol to Bath cycle track at Greenbank.

Whysayit has a very organic style, spelling out YSAE, with letters that look like they have been squeezed out of a tube. The colour combination is a bit iffy in my view, with a solid, pale sandy yellow for the letters and a turquoise blue for the deep shadow. Yellow and red colours have been splashed in for letter shadows and drips. This is an interesting piece that has elements of Miro or Tanguy in it. I’ll be on the look out for more from Whysayit.

4530. Cumberland Basin

I was in Cumberland Basin yesterday and this piece by Whysayit was being buffed over to make way for the latest Bristol Womxn Mural Collective paint jam, which is all part and parcel of the street art wall recycling process, without which the whole scene would simply die. I haven’t posted much work by Whysayit (YSAE) since his painting partner, Kleiner Shames, moved to London, which is a pity, because I really like his letter style – I might have to dig a few photographs out of my archive.

Whysayit’s letters are irregular, but they also are quite easy on the eye, with their curvy shapes. The solid ills are in strongly contrasting colours – no fades here. Painted at the back end of the Queen’s platinum jubilee, I don’t thing there is much doubting what Whysayit’s views on the monarchy are. It is nice to be able to post this piece after such a long gap since the last one, (about four years).

1593. Thomas Street

This is one from the archive byWhysayit, who now calls himself something entirely different, and who I am unable to find on Instagram any more. Out of convention and organisation of my blog and tags, I will continue to call him Whysayit or YSAE, which is what the letters spell out in his writing.

A quick one on the side of what used to be Meat Liquor on the corner of Thomas Street and Stokes Croft. Although it is quick, it is nicely worked and the lines are clean, only the white filling is a bit dodge…maybe he was running out of paint/time.

 

1305. St Werburghs tunnel (17)

I think I said it quite recently that I don’t often get down to St Werburghs tunnel, which is a pity really because I miss out on a lot of gems like this one from Whysayit. I am beginning to think that he might simply be whysay or YSAE, because his Instagram handle which used to be Whysayit has changed to Whysissy and again to Whydot. However, I am not retrospectively going to correct all my posts. I shall call him Whysayit.

Once again we such great quality of ideas and shading from this graffiti artist. When I see great writing, I often wonder whether the artists could do characters or something other than writing. There is something of a split between graff writers and street artists, but some have crossed the divide and others, such as Deamze and Voyder seem to be equally comfortable with both.

1254. Moon Street (41)

Clearly Whysayit spent a little more time on this lovely piece in Moon Street than he has done on some of his other graffiti writing. One of the things I really like about this writer is that he can produce work on a spectrum, from scrawly tagging through to quick throw ups and to something like this which is a nicely executed clean piece.

The colours are excellent, the green hovering beautifully on top of the pink. The fill is clever too, starting as spots on the left, transforming to stripes on the right. Whysayit has also created a real feeling of depth to this piece. There is so much more to graffiti art than simply disguising letters.

1213. M32 roundabout J3 (58)

It is always a pleasure to come across writing by Whysayit. I know that it almost certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, graffiti writing rarely is, but once you have a taste for it and ‘get your eye in’ it becomes rather compelling and addictive.

In this piece, Whysayit is playing with the last letters of his usual moniker, so it has a slightly different form from the usual YSAE. Graffiti writing lends itself to this playful approach and it is all part of the game. As usual he has some decent colour selections and interesting shadow patterns in this one. Lots more of his work out there…finding it is the trick.

1132. Upfest 2017 (97)

My guess is that this is a cheeky little unofficial piece by Whysayit at Upfest this year. To my reasonably trained eye this looks like an opportunistic ‘quick one’ from an artist beter known for his ‘marginally less than legal’ tags and graffiti art all over the City.

It is a nice piece executed in his square style, which looks like it was put up in a bit of a hurry. I suspect he saw a free board at the festival and took his chance to make his mark, and why not? Festivals run the risk of being too clinical and up their own backsides with ‘corporate’ pieces – it is only when we have some real local street/graffiti artists that we remind ourselves what this is all about. Thank you YSAE.

1065. Moon Street (36)

Right up at the north end of Moon Street you will still find this nice writing from Whysayit. Unfirtunately, every time I pass it, which tends to be in the mornings…these days I get the bus home…it is in shadow, so these pictures don’t really bring out the full colour Whysayit has used.

His choice of colours is unusual, especially the lilac background. Maybe he buys his paint from the same place as Face F1st. The writing spells out YSAE, which I guess stands for ‘Why Say’. Always nice to find work by this modest graffiti artist.
