I genuinely thought that DNT had all but stopped painting walls, and haven’t found any of his work since May 2024. What an amazingly pleasant surprise it was to find this mural-style piece at the far entrance to the Boiling Wells Road tunnel a week or two ago.

‘Be happy, be brave, be cheeky’ is a phrase that would probably chime for a great many street artists, that sits above the tunnel entrance surrounded by a stunning floral display. There are some other ‘doodles’ that make it into this ensemble; a pair of shoes, an octopus tentacle and an alien spaceship. I would love to think that this might signal a return to our streets from the artist, but I won’t hold my breath. Instead, I will enjoy this beautiful and refreshing piece.

Hemper is simply an outstanding graffiti artist verging on genius in my view. He appears to have taken a liking to the tunnel in Boiling Wells Lane, which historically doesn’t get anything like the attention that St Werburghs tunnel receives only a couple of hundred meters away. It is a smaller tunnel and there is no lighting, which might account for the smaller turnover.

These gorgeous letters, spelling HEMS, appear to be bursting out from the wall and the purple void beyond. I love the way he has worked cracks into the background and some fallen bricks underneath his letters. The piece is so full of movement and depth – the work of an artist at the top of his game.

Tunnel entrances are always difficult to photograph, especially on sunny days, as you can see from this light/shadow image taken at the second tunnel in St Werburghs. The poor photo doesn’t detract from the quality of the graffiti writing by Hemper.

Writing in his short-form HEMS, Hemper has provided a checked background, which is inspirational, and, using three colours, one step age and of the simple concept. The yellow letters, incorporating two characters, are outstanding, with brilliant use of black and white highlights to give 3D depth to them. The work of a genius (I rarely use the term, but in this case I believe it to be true).

This was a bit of a find, and is a collaboration between Posh and Noise, not a pairing that I would necessarily have expected, but welcome nonetheless. Tucked away in a tunnel that is infrequently painted, but has recently come alive, this is a collaboration that won’t get as much exposure as it certainly deserves.

Noise has painted some of his chunky letters with superbly worked horizontal fills and a rather nice midline in pink, which helps to add depth and interest. The ‘O’ of NOISE has been commandeered by Posh and brings together two very different styles.

Posh has upped his game this year significantly and either works on his own, or in collaborations or augments other artist’s work, demonstrating his versatility. He has framed his little yellow posh characters within the boundary of the ‘O’, and created quite a scene, which seems to include a skateboarding kangaroo? A really unusual and fun collaboration.

The tunnel, under the railway, at Boiling Wells Lane is usually pretty useless for graffiti, more commonly used for throw ups and tagging than serious artworks, but some new pieces from Hemper and friends have rather upgraded this spot, and I wonder if it will encourage others to paint there a little more.

Hemper has arisen from his mini-slumber for the last month or so and started producing these slimline ‘Hems’ pieces of which this is an absolute cracker. The black and white letters, portraying local scenes of trains and caravans, and full of mischievous characters, contrast superbly with the quilt-like patchwork of colourful patterns surrounding the piece. This is masterful work from one of the very best writers in the country.

4222. Boiling Wells Lane (2)

Here we have yet another spectacular carnival portrait piece from Rozalita in the smaller tunnel just beyond St Werburghs tunnel on Boiling Wells Lane. The character has a stunning and intricate ruff around his neck which looks amazing.

It was Rozalita herself who told me the whereabouts of this one when I met her a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of two that she painted on that day. One of the features I really like about the portrait piece is the leaves and vines decorating the clown’s blue face.

There is so much of interest in the piece from the ruff to the face to the hair. Even the  background is rather special. Rozalita is on fire and I am a big fan of her work. More to come soon.

3756. Boiling Wells Lane

Rosalita has really taken the bull by the horns with this piece. Painted at the end of the tunnel after the St Werburghs tunnel on brickwork that previously had only been tagged, or painted by TOYs. With this piece not only has she created a fine piece of art, but she has legitimised this wall as a serious opportunity for other street/graffiti artists.

The carnival/show theme is a thread that runs through Rosalita’s work and is evident once again here with the face of a clown or jester. Many if not most of Rosalita’s characters are tinged with sadness or tragedy… there is something about the look, the hiding behind makeup. What is amazing about this piece, is not simply the portrait, but the fabulous decoration work around it. Another jewel from Rosalita.
