2962. Dean Lane skate park (315)

I don’t know this artist’s street name, but I call him Taboo because I use the convention of naming him after the letters he writes. His Instagram account is @forbidden_association which doesn’t tell us much more about him.

Taboo, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2020
Taboo, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2020

This new piece in Dean Lane is really nicely done and incorporates Tom Cat from Tom and Jerry. The letters, which spell out TABOO, are nicely done and have a chunky heavy look about them which is typical of the artist. If you are looking for a light touch, fine detail and finesse, you are unlikely to find it here, and yet the character element of the piece has a much softer touch. A really nice and rather unusual piece.

2955. M32 Cycle path (59)

I can definitely say that is has been a joy to start finding new pieces dotted around Bristol, and I expect a surge of street/graffiti art over the coming weeks as artists come out of full lock down. Some will inevitable end up in my archive for another day, but I will try to post as many as I am able.

Daz Cat, M32 cycle path, Bristol, May 2020
Daz Cat, M32 cycle path, Bristol, May 2020

This is a super-quick one from Daz Cat in bright and cheerful colours. I really rather like it, and although it is definitely a little bit rough around the edges, it is a striking piece (and one I can use for a future Thurdsay doors post).

2934. M32 Spot (68)

Yes, I’m still working through my archives, unearthing some of the nice pieces that got left behind, which is inevitable when I can only post two new works a day. This is a rather nice column piece from Daz Cat back in July 2018.

Daz Cat, M32 Spot, Bristol, July 2018
Daz Cat, M32 Spot, Bristol, July 2018

Yesterday’s second post was by Kool Hand, and given that these two like to paint together, this might have been sprayed during the same session. Daz Kat usually, but not always, paints cat faces each of which has its own character and colours. The text reads ‘scum triumphant’ – I’m not too sure what it means but it is a good graffiti message. I like the work of Daz Cat, it has a gritty and slightly edgy feel to it, which is what this is all about.

Ninja the cat is getting on a bit and is losing her hearing and sight. Oh my goodness the noisy protest for food. Had she had her wits about her she’d have found the food already in her bowl.

2891. New Stadium Road (23)

Due to his incredible turnover, it was always inevitable that some pieces by Deamze were going to get left behind in the vast filing system that is my archive. Thanks to the lock down I am going through old unpublished material because so little contemporary stuff is being painted just now.

Deamze, New Stadium Road, Bristol, March 2017
Deamze, New Stadium Road, Bristol, March 2017

All the hallmarks of a great Deamze piece are here… the angular technical and complex wildstyle writing and a cute little character. I think that the character is meant to be Garfield, and if it is, then for once it is a bit of a dud from Deamze in terms of its likeness. If it is not Garfield, then it is a brilliant little cat, and who doesn’t like cat street art?

2771. Dalton Square (2)

What a fantastic piece by Sepr this is, and I totally missed it. The wall on the side of The Bell pub has played host to a piece by Sepr before which I posted way back in May 2016, but when I returned some time last year it had been painted over, and I wondered whether the landlords had had enough of street art on their pub.

Sepr, Dalton Square, Bristol, February 2020
Sepr, Dalton Square, Bristol, February 2020

I was passing by that way recently and to my complete surprise and joy this ‘new’ and outstanding mural has taken the place of the old one. I asked a lady who came out of the back door of the pub if it was new and she said that it had been painted in June 2019, I thanked her, and felt rather useless that as a chronicler of Bristol street art I had completely missed this one. The story has a happy ending in so much as I did find it in the end and it looks as good as new.

Sepr, Dalton Square, Bristol, February 2020
Sepr, Dalton Square, Bristol, February 2020Sepr, Dalton Square, Bristol, February 2020

The brilliance of Sepr never seems to dwindle and his story telling through art is quite remarkable. A group of criminal cats have been on a banana robbery and in their attempt to escape have driven in to some police, depcited as pigs of course, and  there are bananas spilling out all over the place.

Make no mistake, I love, love, love this piece and what a treat to find it.

2716. Purdown HAA Battery (2)

Back to the battery, and this time a piece by Daz Cat painted back in August last year. This is a rather touching and gentle piece with the cat holding a little bird on its hand. I rather hope that this is a kind gesture rather than a hungry cat one.

Daz Cat, Purdown HAA Battery, Bristol, January 2020
Daz Cat, Purdown HAA Battery, Bristol, January 2020

The shadow on the piece fortunately doesn’t iterfere too much. Daz Cat’s work has really grown on me over the last couple of years, and I love the way he constructs the cat’s faces, this one in semi-profile, so the eyes are quite different. I love the signature mark above the nose that appears on all Daz Cats’ cats. More from this spot to come.

2682. Moon Street (79)

Here’s a rather nice three-way collaboration from just before Christmas by The Cat Came Back, the ever so familiar Mr Klue and DNT who has rather ‘owned’ this wall over the last few years.

The Cat Came Back, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020
The Cat Came Back, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020

I know absolutely nothing about The Cat Came Back, but there are two things I really like. The first is the name of the artist, it’s just kind of bonkers and memorable too, the second is the simple but well constructed piece from an artist who is obviously well practiced in producing this cat character. I don’t know if the artist is Bristol-based but if they are, then I look forward to seeing more alley cats.

Mr Klue, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020
Mr Klue, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020

The central portion of the collaboration is by Mr Klue, who seems to be on a bit of a painting spree at the moment. I have commented before on the pulses of activity from Mr Klue. You can go a month or two and see nothing new and then out of the blue several pieces appear in quick succession. I can’t read the letters in this abstract piece, but I don’t think it says KLUE. (Update, The artist tells me it does).

DNT, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020
DNT, Moon Street, Bristol, January 2020

On the right is another feline-type creature compete with a third eye, and a design style that is so very DNT. His character pieces tend to be mad up of shapes with solid fills and outlined with black, almost like a stained glass effect. Great to see another DNT piece here. (Note to self – a good wall for ‘One wall many faces’).
