1612. M32 Spot (23)

I’m really pleased that I photographed this column piece by Kid Crayon when I did, because I returned last week and it has been really badly tagged. It is a great ‘brain dump’ kind of piece with all sorts of themes and ideas going on. Almost like a collage.

The identity card is a theme that Kid Crayon has used some years ago on a wheatpaste tucked down a side street – it was one of the first pieces of his that I found. Everything else here seems a little bit surreal and eclectic.

I think that rather than try to interpret the work it is far wiser to just look at it and admire it. I’m not sure if it is deliberate or not, but the guy in the red bucket hat looks a lot like KC himself and I wonder if it is a self-portrait. All good from one of my fave artists.

The columns under the M32 are constantly being refreshed, which is great news for people like me. This column is by an artist I have not featured before on this blog. He is J. West and is a Bristol animator turned artist. He has a love of depicting animal which has been in part inspired by his time working at Bristol Zoo Gardens.

This is a nice strong symmetrical piece that contrasts with many of the other rather more organic pieces at this location. J. West has used the constraints of the column to his advantage and produced this arttractive and intriguing piece. I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

915. M32 Spot (8)

I am fully aware that today is the second day of Upfest, and that you might be expecting a post from the wonderful Bristol street art festival. I’m afraid It’s not going to happen for a while. I will have an enormous amount of work to do with photographs and getting to grips with artists  before I can start to publish. If you want instant gratification, then follow #upfest2017 in instagram, it’ll be smoking!

For now I will post this characterful piece on one of the pillars under the M32 by Deamze. The faces on this work are quite unusual, and not something that I would ordinarily associate with Deamze.

There is a figure on each of the four sides of the pillar, each striking a different pose. I have only posted three of them, because the fourth is impossible to photograph due to the light conditions.

If you want to see the fourth side, you’ll just have to get down to the M32 Spot and check it out. I rather like this piece, and love the jeans and pink shirt, and the burger looks almost good enough to eat.

869. M32 Spot (7)

Another fine contorted ‘Icarus-like’ figure plummets to the ground in this wonderful column piece by Object000. My first thought when I saw this was ‘De Chirico’ the great Italian artist whose work influenced the surrealists. It is the arches that did it. Just google his name and images, and you’ll see what I mean.

I managed to catch up with Object000 when he was spraying this piece, and it turns out that his name is actually not Object zero zero zero, but actually Object ellipsis. So from this point forward I will write his name as Object… . For him the zeros appeared as a result of a digital artifact created because one of the digital platforms he uses wouldn’t accept the ellipsis.

I am not going to go through my back catalogue of posts and change anything as Thisd blog is evolutionary, and I have made many mistakes and learned much on the way. The past is the past. Unlike some in society, I do not wish to rewrite history, however inconvenient.

Too much of a ramble. This is a lovely fresh work by Object… and makes reference to the skate park with two skating figures, which unfortunately are on the other side of the column and only one is pictured here.

Another column piece at the M32 Spot, but this one is rather easier to photograph (marginally) because it is on two faces only. The artist is, of course, the fabulous Decay.

To those that know his work, probably the most striking thing about this piece is that he has introduced some additional colours into his palette, notably yellow, orange and blue. The centre and bottom half are in the colour scheme that I am more accustomed to. To cap it all off, he has wonderful drips. Great work.

Another column under the M32, and another brilliant piece which is impossible to do justice to with my limited photographic skills. This distinctive and crisp piece is by Zase and Dekor with an imaginative and creative underwater scene.

I love the artistic style of this duo and the combination of the wildstyle 3D ZASE lettering combined with a fantastical scene.

The interesting thing about painting a column is that the story that unfolds is caught up in a loop, never-ending. There is no beginning and no end, simply a scene. This must present a bit of a challenge to the artists who choose to spray all four sides.

There is a wit and charm about this particular work – the diver is holding a roller and seems unaware of the looming shark. Perhaps he will beat it off using his artistic weapon of choice. I am a fan of this project, but columns really are a nightmare.
