2035. M32 cycle path (20)

How is it possible that I can still keep finding Laic217 pieces in my archive? This one is from October last year on the M32 cycle path but probably didn’t get published immediately on account of the poor light quality. This particular wall is very hard to photograph without getting flaring from the sun or bright sky behind it. So much about photographing street art is dependent on light quality and time of day – I get it wrong too often, but with a full-time job I am rather constrained in the times I get to go out.

I rarely say this about Laic217’s work, but in my view this is not his best. The shirt material is exceptional , but I am just not sure about the face. I think a partially decomposed face is probably very difficult to do and the teeth and nose don’t quite seem right. Having said that it’s all still pretty good and utterly likeable. Will I be able to dig out some more oldies from Laic217…?

I think the reason I didn’t publish this piece by the brilliant Laic217 at the time I photographed it is that the light was all wrong, and the colours of the piece were a bit disappointing. This narrow lane is a nightmare for photography if you are there on a bright day or at the wrong time of day.

The light is so bright above the hoarding, which means the artwork gets darkened by the auto settings. Now if I were a real photographer, which I absolutely not – I am an archivist – I would be able to use manual settings to overcome this conundrum. Enough excuses already…the piece itself is a nother fine work by this irrepressible artist.

This form reverts to his name accompanied by a character which is a distorted face, and the distortion carries on through all the letters as well. Signature bucket hat and smiley instantly tell you who the artist is. I rather like this overlooked piece and am glad that at last I have posted it.

Cort is an artist I don’t know very much about at all. I do know that he likes to paint with Laic217, and if you look very carefully at the feature image, to the left you can see the edge of one of Laic217’s skeletons in a red hoodie.

This piece by Cort is in two halves, which are sprayed in vert different and distinct styles, I have seen the piece posted on Instagram as two different works, which is understandable, but it is only when you stitch the two pieces together that you can make out the letters CORT – obvious really.

There is a lot I like about this piece from Cort, beyond the different styles, particularly the face in the C which has a very strong designed feel about it which reminds me of my childhood (60s?). Anyhow, this ranks very highly as one of my favourite pieces of writing so far this year.

Ryder’s work can be found all over Bristol, and increasingly I am enjoying his particular style of writing. In this piece he has gone for some really bright colours and a spotty fill to the deep shadow. His characteristic eyes and teeth filling some of the spaces in the lettering.

Whether it is with his RAW mates, T-Rex, Rusk or Smak, or on his own, Ryder consistently turns out great work.
