Sled One, like so many other artists has had a rather quiet winter, and in a conversation with his earlier this week, he happily admitted that he is a ‘fair weather’ painter and doesn’t much like going out on cold, wet days.

This is a distinctive ASK piece painted on the curved wall at Dean Lane. Sled One has painted so many of these over the years, that I expect he could probably do it with his eyes closed. Great letter shapes, great colour combinations, and a piece that feels rather energetic without being frenetic, if that makes sense.
You have to look hard to find this piece by Weas painted on the swimming pool wall behind the now lush hedge. The passageway here is quite narrow, so the photographs are on full wide-angle mode to capture the whole thing.

I think that I prefer Weas’ full combination pieces over his mega-tags that litter the streets of Bristol… there is even one on a utility box in my street. These more extensive pieces show us what he can do when he spends a little more time painting. The letters WEASEL in black across the bottom are accompanied by four (three purple) ghost-like characters weaving their way about. It is versions of these characters that are a familiar sight in the City. A nicely executed piece, hidden from view.
Bean has been back in Bristol, but only for a break I fear, as I have only found one piece recently. I believe he is still studying at university somewhere in the north of England, and only gets the occasional chance to paint. I do hope that when he graduates he will have a little bit more time to paint in Bristol because I truly admire his work.

The character in this piece is particularly notable for the flowing rainbow hair, but I am drawn to the wonderful perspective and anatomy visible through the t-shirt and on the arm and hand. Quite why the protagonist is holding a fish in chopsticks, I don’t know, but sometimes these things are simply an artist’s whim. Hoping to see more in the summer from Bean.
When ever did a worm look so beguiling? This little flat concrete slab in the Dean Lane skate park has had many, many small pieces adorning it, but never one quite like this. It is painted by visiting artist, Created by Billie.

The last time the artist was in town, I met her while she was painting a wall very near this one, and what a lovely lady she is, full of enthusiasm for her work. While this piece has a comforting cartoon feel to it, it also appears to have some accurate anatomical features such as the saddle (clitellum) and segments. Striking and unusual… I love this piece.
Lately, Zinso has been completely smashing it with his clean and colourful pieces of graffiti writing, and this recent piece serves to confirm his place as a one of the tidiest writers in town.

Pretty much hidden from view on the swimming pool wall, this piece deserves to be seen by more passing eyes. The combination of turquoise, light blue, green and red is masterful, and the mauve and black drop shadow have a metallic appearance. I rate this particular piece of artwork very highly and look forward to more this spring/summer.

Every once in a while a top-end collaborative piece appears, and when it does, it simply needs to be admired for its craftsmanship. This is a wicked three-piece collaboration from three established and gifted artists, 3Dom, Dibz and Cheo.

I don’t know if there is an overall theme here, but on the left is an anti-war piece by 3Dom featuring a warring world going up in flames, and a frog-type character seemingly in despair. The gold and blue writing from Dibz is a classic piece of wildstyle writing, delivered with total competence and control. Finally, the TV head character on the right by Cheo has overtones of Evil Edna, a character from a children’s cartoon series called Willow the Wisp. The whole thing is both brilliant and unsettling. Bravo!
Of course, having only first met Wes a month or two back, I haven’t quite worked since been finding his pieces everywhere, both old and new. This one is tucked away on the swimming pool wall behind a hedge and railing.

This is a very bold piece heavily filled with black paint and incorporating flashes of red and yellow. It is quite unusual to see work quite so heavily dominated with black paint, but Wes gets away with it here by including a white drop shadow and contrasting blue/turquoise backdrop. Interesting piece from Wes.
It was so predictable that in the days after first meeting Wes up at Greenbank, I would start to see his work all over the place, and that is exactly what happened. I can’t believe I had this blind spot, but it happens from time to time. I will, however be seeking to make amends from this point in time, and include his pieces when I can.

You might think that having fewer letters makes things simple, but by design, the letters will be bigger, and so fills need to be more considered. While there is a lot of ‘white space’ in these letters from Wes, he has managed to add in enough decoration to keep things interesting. The letters with a tiny overlap appear to float over a greeny-blue base. Watch out for a lot more from Wes.
This humorous piece by Nina Raines is making a point, and it is a point perfectly illustrated and reaches the heart of cynical advertising and profiteering, which we see every single day of our lives but don’t necessarily notice.

So there you have it, an articulate and powerful illustration of how we treat different genders as a society, and that there is plenty of headroom to make things better for all. Excellent and heartfelt work from Nina Raines.
The return of Asre at the back end of last year has been most welcome, and his tidy writing has been featured several times on this blog. This comic-style lettering behind the railings on the swimming pool wall is an absolute gem.

What I am enjoying about Asre’s work is the precision and attention to finishing. All the fills are strong and solid, the shadows and borders cleanly presented – even the blue splash is carefully worked. Asre strikes me as being an artist who takes pride in the appearance of his work, as much as he seems to enjoy creating it. I love the subtle yellow fill spots in his letters.
