2135. M32 Cycle path (21)

Well here is another one from Decay, with a little bit of collaboration from Rezwonk who provides the orange patterned base. I have to say that of Decay’s recent pieces I think this one just shades it as my favourite. You can find it on the M32 cycle path, which looks like it will be reopening very soon, and perhaps elevate access to this wall which has been a little neglected over the last year or so.

I think it is the first time I can remember Decay using this colour palette and I think that it works really well with his writing style. The evolution of his work is a journey I am enjoying very much, and each piece seems to push the boundaries just a little bit more. Still a whole bunch more to come. Rezwonk is a fine artist in his own right, but his tight, bright designs work extremely well in collaborations. All round great piece.

2131. M32 roundabout J3 (136)

I said that there would be more from Decay, and by gum I am a man of my word. It feels like he is enjoying a new lease of life, and not only with writing letters, but also with his colour selections – less so perhaps in this piece but generally he appears to be using more colours in his work.

I think I might have to approach him and ask if he would be prepared to do an interview, because I think his story is likely a very interesting one. Note to self – get of arse and message Decay. More still to come from Decay.

2116. Dean Lane skate park (201)

Decay has become a very, very busy man recently and this is just one of several pieces I will be sharing with you over the coming days/weeks. His transition from abstract works to writing has been seamless and aided by the carry-through of his little ‘Chuck’ character as the ‘E’ in his name.

The colours of this piece in Dean Lane work really well, and it is surprising what a big difference just the tiniest subtle dash of blue tint can do to lift a piece. I am really enjoying his work at the moment and hope you are too.

2100. The Bearpit (179)

Consistent… a word I would use to describe the work of Decay, and in that I mean consistently good. Of course, this year has seen Decay changing his designs considerably away from his trademark abstract work to writing, and what writing.

This piece is notable for two things: first, it is really neatly done and fits the board perfectly and second, it is something of a rarity in The Bearpit these days and very welcome indeed. A beautifully worked piece with some fabulous attention to detail. Always great to see the instantly recognisable colour palette brightening up the place.

1995. St Werburghs tunnel (59)

I am really interested in the evolution of Decay’s work, which seems to have been a focus for him since the beginning of the year. I am used to seeing his trademark black, white, grey and red pieces with concentric layers emanating from the centre. More recently he has been playing with a larger range of colours and trying new ideas. We still get to keep the little character though.

I really like this even if it takes a little getting used to, and if you haven’t yet worked it out, it is a piece of writing that clearly spells out DECAY once you get your eye in. Really looking forward to seeing more of this from Decay, and hoping to catch up with him again, it has been a long time since we last met.

1895. The Bearpit (170)

We are lucky in Bristol to have people like Decay who continue to spray down at The Bearpit in spite of a Council determined to clamp down on spraying. Most of the decent work down there is confined to the boards that were put in place by the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC), and this is where most of the recent work is, like this one. All the other walls are regularly buffed (at some expense ) by the Council. The paint doesn’t even get to dry before the taggers move in. It is an insane cycle of self-destruction. I really think that the Council need to devise a better plan. The Bearpit has the opportunity to become the best legal wall in Britain if they just try to think outside the box.

This Decay piece was a nice surprise for me as I rarely expect to find much down in The Bearpit these days. Great letters (DK) and for good measure two of his little character faces. Unfortunately there is a small poster slapped right in the middle – I guess it’s all part of the furniture.

1855. Brighton Street (1)

I have known about this wonderful piece by Decay for quite some time, but just haven’t had the time to get to this part of St Pauls until very recently. The abstract work was painted to mark the St Pauls carnival and Decay has exchanged his usual greys, blacks and reds for the Rastafarian colours of red, gold and green.

Decay, Brighton Street, Bristol, November 2018
Decay, Brighton Street, Bristol, November 2018

I feel like I have had slight withdrawal symptoms from having seen so little of Decay’s work since Upfest, so finding this was just what the doctor ordered. His abstract formation, or variations of it, are always pleasing to the eye and so distinctive that no signature is required. Nobody else does anything like this.

1827. The Bearpit (167)

I haven’t seen anything new from Decay since Upfest, and I know he has done some pieces in Cheltenham, but I still haven’t had time to venture over there, so I thought I’d post this oldie from my archive.

Decay, The Bearpit, Bristol, April 2016
Decay, The Bearpit, Bristol, April 2016

This piece was sprayed not long after Decay moved to Bristol and I think was the first deviation from his usual concentric shapes around a face that I had seen (I think from recollection). The piece oozes class and the drips , the drips are expertly done. Can’t think why it’s taken me so long to post!
