5574. M32 roundabout J3 (518)

My ‘Most Improved Artist of the Year Award’ for this year goes to Evey, whose work both in therms of quantity and quality has gone to a new level over the last twelve months, and her progress shows no signs of slowing down. I think that part of this improvement has to be down to the frequency of painting and practice.

This wonderfully colourful piece on the M32 roundabout includes a crown, usually an emblem reserved for the senior or established artists in a place, but I fully believe Evey has earned this. Evey manages to change both the design and fills in her letters with each piece she paints, demonstrating a willingness to push the boundaries. This is an eye-catching fill that asks to be looked at, and works especially well on the black background. There is so much more to come from this hard-working and talented artist.

What fun it has been to follow Evey’s progress as a graffiti writer over the last few years. She has come a long way, and this recent RBF paint jam Barbie piece, I suspect, may have stretched her somewhat, and she has carried it off brilliantly.

The font is Barbieish, without conceding too much to the Mattel brand, but also works very well as an Evey piece. Some nice clean lines and solid fills, although some colours are a little bit thin in places. I only recently discovered (a tip from I bee W) that spray cans often have a little graphic on the can describing how thick or thin the paint is – good to know and explains why sometimes you can use twice as much of one colour than another. This is a fine piece from Evey on what looked like it was a super-fun day.

The turnover at Sparke Evans Park is very slow these days, and the chance of meeting artists actively painting there is minimal, however that is exactly what happened when Evey, Peggy and Desi were painting this wall a short while ago. Of course, I had to go back again to get clean pictures of the completed wall, and what a wall it is.

To the left of the three is a gorgeous EVEN from Evey, painted in the pink and blue colours replicated through the collaborative effort. There are some nice letter shapes and a band of horizontal fades running through the letters, which are given a little bit of extra interest with squiggles, hearts and a peace sign.

Peggy, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, March 2023

In the middle is a wonderful floral design from Peggy, picking up hints of the pink and blue theme, and adding in some yellow touches to lift the design further. Each of the flower heads contains a signature eye peering out. The style of strong black lines and colourful fills betrays her tattoo art background.

Desi, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, March 2023
Desi, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, March 2023

To the right, Desi picks up the bold lettering and colours and in part reflects Evey’s work, although there is a subtle difference in the patterning, with both colours appearing in each of Desi’s letters and alternating top and bottom halves from one letter to the next. The whole wall by these three ladies recognised International Women’s Day, and what a fine way to celebrate it.

Desi and Evey are painting buddies and frequently meet up to paint together. In fact, I met them yesterday painting together with Peggy in Sparke Evans Park, a spot I have to return to, because they hadn’t completed their work while I was there.

As I have said on numerous occasions about both Evey and Desi, is that they are improving all the time. Evey has painted this rather nice bubble writing EVEN, but the most striking thing about it is that it is a tribute piece to her (I assume) grandpa, and the letters are sad ones and the ‘V’ is a broken heart.

Desi, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, February 2023

Desi has gone with her Veil variant in this piece and offers up thee hearts – how lucky we are. The letters are nicely filledand the white spots add a bit of depth. I would like to see Desi start working on some more complex fill patterns, which I think she is ready for. (What am I? Some kind of school master? Cringe).

Evey turned up late to this RBF mini-paint jam, so I didn’t get to meet her on this occasion, but I did chat for a while with Desi and Lupa who had buffed the wall and were well into their pieces.

Evey, Dean Lane, Bristol, February 2023

I seem to say it every time I post a new piece by Evey, but her progress is steady, and each new piece shows improvements both in design and finishing. This EVEN is a classic with nice curvy letters, three horizontal shaeds of blue/lilac and a topping of white with sprinkles – a wonderful pudding served up – delicious. It must surely be time for an Evey gallery.

I sincerely hope that we will be treated to a whole load more EVEN pieces by Evey this year, as I think she is one of the most improved artists during 2022. The more she paints the better she will get, and we are already seeing signs of more adventure in her work.

Evey, St Werburghs, Bristol, December 2022
Evey, St Werburghs, Bristol, December 2022

This is a lovely piece from a recent RBF paint jam (there were two in quick succession) which has been finished very tidily. The five horizontal fills work nicely, and the borders and highlights are neat and tidy, bar a few yellow drips, which are rather nice. All in all a very pleasing piece of graffiti writing from Evey.

This collaboration is an absolute belter from the RBF crew and brings together the talents of Bnie, Vozie, Pekoe and Evey in one magnificent board.

It was great to watch the crew paint this piece on a gorgeous day in late May, which felt like a genuinely joyous celebration of art and music in a totally Bristol context.

The colour scheme adopted was sustained across the whole collaborative piece and combines the colours pink and blue that seem to have been a bit of a thing this year. On the left, Bnie and Vozie spoilt us with two superb examples of great graffiti writing.

Pekoe, Upfest 22, Bristol, May 2022
Pekoe, Upfest 22, Bristol, May 2022

The centrepiece of the collaboration was this magnificent portrait piece by Pekoe and arguably her finest piece of the year, although the bar she set herself was pretty high.

On the right, Evey rounded the piece off with a huge shout-out to themselves with an RBF which I think might have been painted by Bnie at a guess. Some beautiful work from a beautiful group of people.

Evey, St Werburghs, Bristol, November 2022

Ooh, Ahh! This is a stunner from Evey, painted during Bnie’s birthday paint jam, described by Paul H as the paint jam that keeps on delivering, and he is right. I would suggest that this might be Evey’s most ambitious piece to date, and she has carried it off with style and competence.

Evey, St Werburghs, Bristol, November 2022
Evey, St Werburghs, Bristol, November 2022

This is an ambitious piece with lovely large letters spelling EVEN, and within the letters a picture of people hanging out under a stretch of arches, in front of a setting sun. A story within a story, if you like. The letters are rounded off with a colourful 3D drop shadow. Big respect to Evey for this one.

4712. Spake Evans Park (56)

Evey, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, August 2022

Evey has been out and about much more this summer, or at least that is how it feels, and with each outing her work is improving. Her letters are large and obvious, spelling out EVEN, with a focus on the variation of fills.

Evey, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, August 2022
Evey, Sparke Evans Park, Bristol, August 2022

This one was painted as part of a collaborative wall and is notable for its horizontal fills of at least six colours. There is something not quite consistent with the drop-shadow on the stars, but that is a small detail, all in all this is a bright, fun piece from Evey.
