What an absolute treat. Gatoloco, who is an occasional visitor to Bristol, has absolutely knocked it out of the park with this outstanding piece of writing. The letters spell KASO, he appears to have dropped the ‘E’, but maybe that was all he could fit into the space.

I think that Gatoloco might be my favourite writer outside the city of Bristol. He brings so many design elements into his work, without it looking busy or fussy. I love the stripes on the letter ‘A’, a theme he has adopted in other recent pieces (a quick squint at his Instagram account revealed). The piece can be roughly dated, by the shout-out to Gaza. Fine work from the visitor.

I usually associate Dun Sum with the spot in Lawrence Weston (L Dub), because that is where I have seen most of his work, but lately he has painted a couple of times in Bristol proper, this being a Halloween piece painted alongside Hypo, Zeks and DJ Perks. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, Hypo had already overpainted his own piece. I was lucky enough to bump into Dun Sum, Hypo and Zeks a couple of weeks later on the other side of the roundabout, and it was the first time I had met any of them. What lovely people.

Dun Sum is a wonderful artist in my view. He creates some incredibly original pieces usually with animals and usually full of imagination. In this Halloween piece, a bug of sorts seems to be powering up a pumpkin, but I guess the story is open to interpretation. The artwork is brilliant, and it is interesting to note that the way Dun Sum applies his paint looks much more like brushwork than spray paint due to the way he blends his colours throughout his work. I absolutely love this piece.

I have a feeling that we might be seeing a lot more from Minto as I believe that he has moved west from London, so his occasional pieces might be more regular going forward. This piece was painted during a small paint jam which included Rusk, who seems to be having a bit of a purple patch, and Hypo too.

Minto has a very distinct style, and while no two pieces are even close to being the same, his style shines through. The letters MINTO lend themselves very well to graffiti writing, with each of the first four letters having straight lines (in upper case), creating an angular opportunity. The character is inspired by Gozzilah and there is a little shout out below. I have no idea what Gozzilah is all about – is it fashion? Is it a music thing? Sometimes when writing this blog I feel rather left behind by contemporary culture. I think that it is something to do with a cyber fashion culture… who knew?

This is one of several pieces painted by Logoe a few weeks back during one of his blitz weekend visits. I got lucky and managed to catch up with him while he was painting this one, and we chatted for a while. Logoe is truly one of the gentlemen of Bristol graffiti writing, and although not a resident of the city, you would hardly know it.

This is a rather special piece with his writing superimposed on a hillside horizon, cutting the piece into two segments with two colours, black and pink, that contrast differently with the letters. The writing is in a straight-line joined up script style, spelling out the artist’s name. Of course there are a few oval dots thrown in for good measure. Nice work from Logoe.

Aah, the comforting and aesthetically pleasing letter form of Phour graces the pages of Natural Adventures once again. There are some arrangements of letters that just seem to work, and lend themselves to being written at scale on walls. Phour, Pl8o, Mest and Tes, are all good examples of this.

Although rather underrepresented on this blog, Phour is one of my favourite throwie writers, although his work spans the spectrum from quick and dirty pieces through to rather more considered and tight works like this one. Phour has painted strong black letters with a white drop shadow, a subtle horizontal line of bubbles and a red contrasting bubble backdrop. Overall a really nicely presented piece.

This classic burner on the long roundabout wall is one of two recent Mr Riks pieces to appear in Bristol. To the untrained eye, this might look like any other chrome throw up, but have a closer look and there are signs that this piece is by no ordinary artist.

The letters spell out RIKS, with a couple of comedy eyes and fingers at the top of the ‘I’, and there is a little deliberate blurring on some of the edges of the letters. It is the drop shadow, however, that gives this piece away as having been painted by a craftsman. The shadow has a vanishing point somewhere beneath the piece, and its curves perfectly match the curves of the letters. The stripes, which add depth, and orange border are really nice and tight too. The whole thing may appear modest, but is at the same time classy and masterful.

I don’t know if I am imagining it or whether it is a thing, but it feels like Smak isn’t painting as frequently as he used to and that when I find a piece by him these days it is a rather nice surprise. This is a stylish piece of graffiti writing from a couple of weeks ago, painting alongside some of the RBF crew.

The writing is painted in a stylised font, which is not what I am used to seeing from Smak who tends to prefer a more wildstyle approach. Just by looking at the writing, you can see that it is of the highest quality, with sensational letter fills and a beautifully subtle 3D drop shadow. I love the design of the ‘S’ in particular. Sheer class from Smak

My ‘Most Improved Artist of the Year Award’ for this year goes to Evey, whose work both in therms of quantity and quality has gone to a new level over the last twelve months, and her progress shows no signs of slowing down. I think that part of this improvement has to be down to the frequency of painting and practice.

This wonderfully colourful piece on the M32 roundabout includes a crown, usually an emblem reserved for the senior or established artists in a place, but I fully believe Evey has earned this. Evey manages to change both the design and fills in her letters with each piece she paints, demonstrating a willingness to push the boundaries. This is an eye-catching fill that asks to be looked at, and works especially well on the black background. There is so much more to come from this hard-working and talented artist.

I got that tingle of excitement when I came across this piece by pekoe, just as I always do when I find her work. Pekoe is one of those handful of artists that I associate with being the beating heart of the current Bristol scene, giving the city a strong sub-culture identity.

The piece was painted as part of an RBF paint jam, one of two over a short space of time. I would say that this is not one of Pekoe’s best pieces, there is something a little peculiar with the proportions, but it marks a subtle change, especially with fewer busy elements in the character’s hair and in the background than usual. I think that the portrait lives up to the Resting Bitch Face moniker rather well. So good to see a Pekoe portrait, it feels like it has been a little while.

This lovely script writing piece by Logoe was one of nine painted during a frenzied 24 hour period of activity when he visited Bristol a few weeks back. I think I only managed to find five of them, and often these blitz pieces get painted over quite quickly, depending on where they are.

It would be inconsistent of me to say I like the colours used in this piece, because I have said repeatedly on Natural Adventures that brown colour palettes are probably my least favourite. What he has done here is great to see… just a shame it is brown.
