I have included this piece, not because it is amazing, but because it is by PL8o whose work I like and because it is representative of a great many tribute pieces in Bristol to Dorns who recently passed away.

There is something easy and accessible about PL8o’s letter style, and the colours in this piece certainly stand out. It is a nice tribute. Interestingly, this piece was over-painted by an artist who is not local and who probably didn’t know about Dorns or the tributes to him. That piece has since been tagged with ‘Dorns’ written all over it, and a comment which reads ‘You had the whole wall…’  basically telling the artist off for painting over a tribute piece – an example of the politics and rules (there are no rules) of street/graffiti art.

Not every piece that appears on Natural Adventures is necessarily of the highest calibre, but that isn’t really the point. I like to include a representative spread of pieces from low end to high end, from spray paint to wheatpastes and from graffiti writing to portraits. I like to feature it all here, rather than creating something exclusive. The risk, of course, is that not everybody is going to like everything, although there will, I hope, be a broad enough spectrum of artwork here that most people will see something that they like eventually.

I have included this piece from Pl8o, mainly because it has been a very long while since I last saw something from him. This piece isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it has a certain attractiveness to it. The letters are nice and uniform, and painted on a particularly challenging wall surface. I hope it signals a return to more frequent pieces from a graffiti writer I like a lot.

I haven’t seen an awful lot from Pl8o for quite a while, so it was really great to come across this recent piece in Sparke Evans Park. There is something rather different about Pl8o’s work that helps it to stand out from the crowd, and I think that can be attributed in part to the aesthetically pleasing letters P L 8 O… it just kind of works.

This is a bit of a cheeky one featuring a character who makes up the letter ‘P’ and who happens to be doing a fart. This is quite a common theme with street art characters and usually provokes a chuckle or two. The point about this piece is that Pl8o draws attention to to the gaseous emission with the text “is it art, or is it fart”. Great fun and skilfully done.

More fun painting from the playful Pl8o. This modest piece is located on the cycle path between Sparke Evans Park and Temple Meads station alongside the tidal River Avon. What I like about Pl8o is the complete absence of ambiguity in his work. What you see is what you get and that is that.

It is possible that this is a Halloween piece as it was most likely painted in October and has a ghostly skull character, it is also possible that it has nothing to do with the festival and any ghostly link is coincidental. Big fat solid letters, big fat yellow fills and a cheeky character. This piece does what it says on the tin.

A graffiti writer and artist who regularly pops up on Natural Adventures, Pl8ohas recently had a bit of a purple patch, painting several pieces in the space of a month or two. This is a large burner on the cycle path that runs along the river Avon between Sparke Evans Park and Temple Meads station.

This large (larger than it looks), bold and humorous piece is a great example of Pl8o’s work, always well executed and fun to look at. The letters/number he uses are so easy on the eye, and here he has added an extra ‘o’ to create an excellent pair of eyes, a mechanism used by artists with ‘oo’ letters to great effect, such as Boogie and Scooj (hah!). Over the years, Pl8o’s contribution has not been insignificant as evidenced by this gallery of his work.

It feels like Pl8o has slowed down a little, especially compared to previous years, although that may be in part due to the fact that I haven’t seen much of his work, which doesn’t necessarily equate to a slowdown in activity by an artist. It was great therefore to find this piece on the long wall under Brunel Way.

I think that Pl8o hit the jackpot when he selected his letter/number combination, as there is something aesthetically pleasing about the shapes of the letters that flow together brilliantly, especially the way he paints them. These letters are filled nicely and the ‘8’ is represented by an alien cartoon style character. A fun and welcome appearance from Pl8o.

For much of the year, Pl8o has been fairly quiet, but in recent weeks he seems to have rediscovered his enthusiasm and energy for painting walls – perhaps he has a little more time on his hands. This piece in Sparke Evans Park is one of several new pieces appearing around Bristol at the moment.

There is a lot of creativity in this piece, and the character is cleverly interlinked with the letters. The character is a beautifully painted carton cyclist, full of movement indicated by the shirt flaring at the back and the three white movement lines. The rear wheel of the bicycle is incorporated into the ‘o’ of Pl8o. A nice birthday piece for Alos.

If you take a look at Pl8o’s work over the last few years, it is clear to see that he has made significant progress, added characters to his work and great sophistication in his letters, which are becoming more and more elaborately disguised.

This recent offering from Pl8o Is beautifully designed and carefully painted with some interesting colour transitions vertically and horizontally. It is the letter designs that steal the show though, he really seems to be putting a lot more thought into these designs. A nice piece from Pl8o.

4264. Cumberland Basin

Not much time for today’s posts, as I and my wife are off to Bath this morning for a trip to the theatre, which makes a nice change from our usual Saturday routine. This is yet another fabulous piece from Pl8o, whose work is just getting better and better.

This writing and character combination is becoming the norm for Pl8o and he is really good at it too. In this one his letters, beautifully crisp and clean with sharp lines, are accompanied by a breakdancing bee. I don’t know the bee character, and if I had a little more time I would try to find out more, but I will have to leave it there. Another fine and confident piece from the artist.

4208. River Avon (26)

The whole stretch of cycle path from Sparke Evans Park all the way to Temple Meads Station is very popular at the moment, and it seems that every time I get down there, there is something new to enjoy. This piece from Pl8o was part of a collaborative effort, and really stood out.

The letters are stretched out over a long bit of wall and rather difficult to capture all in one picture frame. Pink and green contrast rather well and with the blue borders the letters stand out and are rather bold. The fills are solid and lines clean, with the lines on the brick wall offering good points of reference, so the whole think looks tidy.

As with many Pl8o pieces, he has dropped in a character for good measure, looking like a bit of a mash-up of a ghost and an alien. All good fun really and nicely done.
