Not much time for today’s posts, as I and my wife are off to Bath this morning for a trip to the theatre, which makes a nice change from our usual Saturday routine. This is yet another fabulous piece from Pl8o, whose work is just getting better and better.
This writing and character combination is becoming the norm for Pl8o and he is really good at it too. In this one his letters, beautifully crisp and clean with sharp lines, are accompanied by a breakdancing bee. I don’t know the bee character, and if I had a little more time I would try to find out more, but I will have to leave it there. Another fine and confident piece from the artist.
The whole stretch of cycle path from Sparke Evans Park all the way to Temple Meads Station is very popular at the moment, and it seems that every time I get down there, there is something new to enjoy. This piece from Pl8o was part of a collaborative effort, and really stood out.
The letters are stretched out over a long bit of wall and rather difficult to capture all in one picture frame. Pink and green contrast rather well and with the blue borders the letters stand out and are rather bold. The fills are solid and lines clean, with the lines on the brick wall offering good points of reference, so the whole think looks tidy.
As with many Pl8o pieces, he has dropped in a character for good measure, looking like a bit of a mash-up of a ghost and an alien. All good fun really and nicely done.
Each time I see a piece from Pl8o, they just seem to get better and better. Apart from the odd throw up, there is a more considered and designed approach to his work, and this piece, I think really demonstrates the progress made. I recently published a gallery of Pl8o’s work, and you can see the improvements over time, although frankly, his work has always been pretty good.
I have said before that his letters are very kind on the eye, and he has certainly made the most of them. The numeral 8 in particular is great to have in graffiti writing, it is a bit like OO which also works… Look out for those SCOOJ toy letters next summer (maybe). I am still loving Pl8o’s work
A few weeks ago Pl8o told me that he had a whole bunch of new designs ready to go, and since then I have figured that each new piece I have seen would have been part of this roll-out, including this beauty on the long wall at Greenbank.
If I am honest, I think that brown and orange are my least favourite street art colours, although if used to highlight or fill pieces they are not so bad. I suspect that this relates to a rather horrible pair of nylon pyjamas I had in the 1970s that were brown with an orange trim. Yuk.
I absolutely love the stylised letters that Pl8o has drawn up and the character is a very welcome addition, which I assume is by him too. All in all a very nice addition to his portfolio, just a pity about the colours (in my opinion).
Life has become uncomfortably cluttered and busy in recent weeks, both at home and at work, and I am struggling a little to keep on top of my daily blog posts. Today for example I am using my lunch break to write this post, because I simply ran out of time last night and early this morning.
So here we have a delightful piece of graffiti writing from Pl8o, possibly the tightest I have seen from him. The clean lines of the letters are somewhat eclipsed by the fabulous orange border. Beautifully designed and executed. Surely it must be time for a Pl8o gallery.
It is always a pleasure to come across a Pl8o piece, even more so since I met him. There is something about his letter choice that really appeals to me, so not only is it a nice bit of word play, the shapes of the letters work really nicely together.
In this piece, Pl8o has reverted to his big block letters after a brief flirtation with script, although the dep 3D shadings he favours are not present in this one. A decent enough throwie (throw up) and another to add to his repertoire.
I met Pl8o for the first time a couple of weeks ago while he was painting at Brunel Way, and what a nice fellow he is. He talked a little about his recent experimentation with styles, but said that he was lining up some more ‘blocky’ pieces, of which I guess this is one.
This piece is a delightful sleepy nighttime piece with a moon and stars for added interest. Pl8o has painted some large block letters, nicely filled and decorated, but the star of the show is the moon face blowing clouds into the night sky. A fun and light-hearted piece.
Rather embarrassingly, and I had the slightest concern about this, this piece is not by Pl8o after all, although I don’t know who it is by. Everything I have written about Pl8o still stands. I will change the captions to reflect this.
An artist I used to write about quite a lot was Ysae, but he seemed to disappear off the scene for a while. Maybe this is by him, there is a signature, or is that a shout out. The dangers of thinking I know more than I actually do. It happens.
I am rather looking forward to producing a gallery of work by Pl8o and when I have collected a few more pieces by him I will do so. The reason I say this is that he has been playing with all sorts of ideas around his letters and is going through something of a script writing phase, but it is the development of these ideas that is fun to witness.
In this piece Pl8o has gone with a much more curvy and flowing script style and incorporated some drips and floating ovals to embellish the letters. The colours are perhaps not my favourite, but work well together and certainly stand out in the orange gloom of St Werburghs tunnel. A nice piece.
This piece, and one or two other recent ones, mark a slight change in style for Pl8o, whose large block letters might be more familiar to regular readers. This time he has gone with something more akin to script lettering and it all comes together rather well.
It is always refreshing to see artists try something different, switching things up a bit. I like this piece a lot, but I think that prepping the wall with a slightly more solid wash would have been beneficial. Other than that a fun new direction from Pl8o.
