Rather embarrassingly, and I had the slightest concern about this, this piece is not by Pl8o after all, although I don’t know who it is by. Everything I have written about Pl8o still stands. I will change the captions to reflect this.
An artist I used to write about quite a lot was Ysae, but he seemed to disappear off the scene for a while. Maybe this is by him, there is a signature, or is that a shout out. The dangers of thinking I know more than I actually do. It happens.
I am rather looking forward to producing a gallery of work by Pl8o and when I have collected a few more pieces by him I will do so. The reason I say this is that he has been playing with all sorts of ideas around his letters and is going through something of a script writing phase, but it is the development of these ideas that is fun to witness.
In this piece Pl8o has gone with a much more curvy and flowing script style and incorporated some drips and floating ovals to embellish the letters. The colours are perhaps not my favourite, but work well together and certainly stand out in the orange gloom of St Werburghs tunnel. A nice piece.
This piece, and one or two other recent ones, mark a slight change in style for Pl8o, whose large block letters might be more familiar to regular readers. This time he has gone with something more akin to script lettering and it all comes together rather well.
It is always refreshing to see artists try something different, switching things up a bit. I like this piece a lot, but I think that prepping the wall with a slightly more solid wash would have been beneficial. Other than that a fun new direction from Pl8o.
Pl8o who also goes by the Instagram moniker of westernmiddleages has resurfaced in Bristol after a rather quiet period, and he has come back with bigger, bolder and brighter pieces. His letter/number choice has always leant itself well to graffiti writing, but now he has added much deeper 3D shadows into the mix.
Although the St Werburghs tunnel never photographs particularly well you can see the quality and creativity in this piece. My favourite part, probably because it looks a little incongruous is the red and black dot shading… really eye-catching. Nice to see him back.
It would appear that this wall, after a considerable period of neglect is becoming a little popular. A week or two back there was a nice new collaboration from Mudra and Nugmoose. This has now been replaced with this more than half-decent piece from Pl8o.
I am very pleased to see that Pl8o seems to be active again after quite a long absence – he is another artist who has gone to ground for much of the lock down period. This is a delightful deep-shadowed piece of graffiti writing spelling out the artist’s moniker yellow to orange to black fades. His letters lend themselves very nicely to writing and there is something very easy on the eye about them. Great to see Pl8o back hitting walls again.
This is simply wonderful. Clean, crisp, beautifully designed work from Pl8o on the wall overlooking the Cumberland Basin on the north side. There were several eye-catching pieces along this stretch when I took these pictures, including this one.
The colours chosen and bold letters scream out from the wall – no wallflower this one. I am really enjoying Pl8o’s pieces, in particular his creativity and although the central design stays similar from piece to piece, the execution and details vary considerably. I particularly like the way the letters are broken up by black lines, giving a block effect, almost like stone cladding. So much more to come.
Another very nice piece from Pl8o, an artist who I would put in a cluster along with Phour, Mena and Mest, because they all have a similar approach to their work. Each of these artists write their names clearly and legibly in predominantly the same style from piece to piece, but the magic is in how they decorate and fill the letters. Pl8o is perhaps the one who tinkers with his letter shapes more than the others, but his pieces are always instantly recognisable.
This one on the cycle path is in pinks set on a blue background, always a winning formula, and the letters are broken up by fine blue lines creating an interesting effect. To add further interest, the 8 has been split into two pinks. This is a lovely piece from an emerging talent whose work is improving all the time.
It seems that most places I look I find a piece by Pl8o, and they are usually superb too. He fits into a category alongside Phour of artists that I have only relatively recently posted on Natural Adventures, but whose work I have been photographing for quite a long while… a visit to the archives may well be on the cards.
Pl8o would appear to favour this spot and area of Bristol for his work although I have seen his writing elsewhere. This looks like a bit of a ‘quick one’ painted over at least two older pieces of writing – time to buff the wall I say. Even though the background is a bit messy and distracting, the shape and form of Pl8o’s letters is great – he has chosen some excellent letters/number to work with. I like this throw up, there is a sense of joy about it.
I didn’t find as many Halloween pieces this year as I usually find, but that might be as a result of the terrible wet weather we have had over the last week or so. I did however manage to capture this piece under Brunel Way by Pl8o and although not overtly Halloween, I think this collaborative wall was to celebrate the festival.
This piece is painted out entirely in greyscale which is rather nicely done. The owl in a darker grey stands out and adds interest to the piece overall. The bags in front of the piece actually belong to Varo who was painting the word ‘Conspiracy’ just to the right of this piece. Pl8o continues to go from strength to strength.
There are two graffiti writers that I am really enjoying seeing at the moment and they are Phour and Pl8o, both emerging as great writing talents to add to the long list in the city. This is a recent piece by Pl80 on the long wall facing the river.
Pink is a colour that seems to be coming back into fashion and as with other pink pieces about the place it works very nicely indeed with blue. The 3D shadow is nicely done and the red details and yellow stars work very nicely in this piece. Probably Pl8o’s greatest asset though is the shape of the letter/number combination he uses it is very pleasing to the eye and full of lovely curves.
Ooh, I am really enjoying the work of Pl8o at the moment. The letters he uses lend themselves very well to graffiti writing and provide a lot of scope to do great things, like Boogie for example. There are some letters And numbers that just seem to work well together.
This one was at the farm end of the tunnel and in daylight that makes it so much easier to photograph. All the elements of this piece come together. The gold letters and grey shadow, the stars and spots and white letter stars. This piece is so very easy on the eye.
