Raid has had a flurry of activity this winter, and I keep finding pieces new to me, wondering if they are recent or if I have simply missed them. I can be pretty sure this is a recent piece (it wishes us a Happy New Year) as turnover in the tunnel is much easier to monitor than in some of the other spots in Bristol.

One of the challenges Raid appears to have set himself, on occasion, is to create a piece that is rotationally symmetrical, and this piece I think falls into that category. The fills in this piece are beautifully done, and the green line with stars creates interest and continuity through the letters. It is interesting that he hasn’t painted a border between his fill and drop shadow, preferring to leave a clean line instead. Surely time for a gallery?

5641. River Avon (54)

I find it hard to believe that I have only posted 54 pieces from the walls that run alongside the River Avon, but that is perhaps a measure of the task I have set myself. I would guess that I photograph between 20 and 40 new pieces every week, but have the capacity to post a maximum of 21, more commonly 14. As you can see, there is a large deficit, which is actually considerably larger than that, because there will be many pieces that I don’t find at all. Notwithstanding this challenge, I shall continue to push that bolder up the hill, because I enjoy it.

Raid has been a little quieter than when I first became aware of his work, but is still turning out some lovely pieces from time to time. This piece stands out with its big bold letters and super colour scheme. It is interesting how some colour combinations really stand out, such as orange and green as in this piece, pink and light blue (the colours of the 2023 season) and black and red. Everything about this piece has been done well. Great letter shapes, lovely fills which are interesting but not over-busy and a well worked drop shadow and neat border. All in all, this is a very tidy piece from Raid.

Observing Raid’s progress is a genuine pleasure. Each time I see his work I see some improvement, and a boldness or confidence that is growing. I also like it that he is adapting his style from piece to piece, settling for a while and then moving on.

This is a nice one in the tunnel from a few weeks back, and uses that tried and tested colour combination of pink and light blue. The letters are beautifully presented, and the fills very nicely done indeed, with a swathe of stars running horizontally through the letters and pink ‘ribbons’ at the top and bottom. A decent drop shadow and blue backdrop round the piece off perfectly.

5386. River Avon (47)

When a new artist makes it on to your radar, it becomes very difficult not to see their work everywhere, especially if they are as productive as Raid seem to be. Raid made his debut on Natural Adventures back in March this year, and since then he has appeared seven times, and I still have some of his work in my files. Look out for a gallery before Christmas.

The letters RAID, I imagine, are quite fun to play with, and the way that Raid writes with large bold lettering, gives him plenty of scope for interesting fills. The letters are joined at the base, and the fill bleeds from one letter to the next. Some nice swirly psychedelic forms and shapes fill the space nicely Some nice touches include a thin orange border on the right-hand side of the letters and a decent 3D drop shadow capped off with a tight black border. This is another fine piece from Raid.

Since first encountering Raid earlier this year, he has been one of the most productive forces on the streets of Bristol, and right now, that is some achievement. I have met the artist on a couple of occasions, and he seems to be a really decent bloke, he also told me how he is enjoying playing with his letters, trying new ideas, but with the same general style.

These pinky-purple letters on a light pink background are easy on the eye. His fills have been very nicely executed and provide plenty of interest, and the turquoise/white sparks running through the piece add a detail that rounds the whole thing off nicely. More in the pipeline from Raid.

I am under a bit of pressure today, lots to do before heading off for York this afternoon for a conference tomorrow, so I’m afraid this is going to be a short one. I met Raid a week or two back while he was painting his new writing style on the M32 roundabout, a piece that was overpainted before I got to see it completed. He told me that he was really enjoying his new letter style and was drawn to the symmetrical elements in it.

This one behind the railings at Dean Lane. The symmetry is a rotational one, where the R and the D are similar and the A and I are too. If you spin the piece around a central point, it would look the same upside down. I love to see artists experimenting and growing. Expect to see more from Raid this summer.

5228. Greenbank (80)

It is not all that long ago that Mudra moved to Bristol and since he arrived, his work has been getting bigger, bolder and more sophisticates. Another more recent arrival is Raid, whose work has made a significant impact, and who is developing his style as he goes along.

This piece is an upper case RAID, which is the first I have seen, all his other works being written in lower case. The two-tone green fills are different for each letter, and all work rather nicely, and the colour contrasts nicely with the splash of pink background. I expect Raid to be a reasonably regular contributor to the pages of Natural Adventures.

In mid-March, I first posted a piece by Raid, saying that there was more to come. Today is the third piece from the artist to appear on Natural Adventures and there will be plenty more this year I’m sure.

Raid is a graffiti writer who likes to keep a fixed general shape and design of his letters, but introduces the magic with fills, shadows, borders and backgrounds. One of the very clever techniques he uses, and which I haven’t really seen from other artists, is to use two colours in the 3D drop shadow, in this instance black augmented with green ‘slabs’ or ovals, which adds texture and depth to the edges. The silver letters are nicely patterned with a blue and pink ridge line and some spots for good measure. I am interested to see where Raid takes us on his painting journey.

5126. M32 Cycle path (207)

I love it when a new artist appears on my radar and I start to see their work all over the place. I think that Raid is a relative newcomer to Bristol, but he is already making an impact with his distinct and attractive writing.

The letters spell RAID, with the ‘A’ being rather distinct. The letter shapes seem to be retained from piece to piece, so it is the drop shadow and fills that change, and he has done a superb job with this one. The drop shadow is cleverly done with a black surround and grey middle, adding character and interest. The solid blue fill is decorated with colourful pixel patterns, creating a rather joyful overall feel. More to come from Raid soon.

It is possible, in fact it is absolutely the case, that in documenting street art and graffiti, one can have a blind spot, and believe me I have had many over the years. This particular blind spot relates to the work of Raid, whose work I simply hadn’t registered until I met the artist while he was painting this piece in Dean Lane a little while back.

Of course, I have since found two more of his pieces, and I suspect there are plenty in my archives – something else to look out for next time I go archive-surfing. What makes my omission even more crazy is that this is the work of a superb writer. His letters are beautifully presented, and have a good proportionality about them. The lines are nice and sharp and fills solid, and his wispy decorations add a touch of flair. Watch this space for more from Raid.
