2805. M32 cycle path (52)

One of the most consistent writers in Bristol is Rusk, always meticulous in the turnout of his pieces. This is a gorgeous example of his great work on the M32 cycle path, adjacent to an already featured piece from Soker.

The letter shapes are most pleasing and the blue 3D shading contrasts beautifully with the chrome letters and red gaseous background. This wall is no push-over as it conceals a metal door, so the surfaces are pretty uneven and made of different materials, not that you’d know it from looking at it. Rusk is pretty busy just at the moment, which is a very good thing as far as I am concerned.

2687. Turbo Island

Turbo Island Has seen quite a bit of action in the last month. First there was a reminder to vote in the election from DNT (not posted), then there was a happy Christmas message from Rezwonk and Decay, and then early in the new year, Mr Klue gave us this lovely abstract piece.

Nothing lasts long on this hoarding before it gets tagged, and I was a bit slow in photographing this one. I do think though that it is a great place for street/graffiti art and I would like to think that this will become a high quality high turnover space for local artists. It certainly is in a fantastic spot with a whole ton of cars passing by every day, and I think that there is an element of curation from the Peeople’s Republic of Stokes Croft.

Mr Klue has included a Mad Hatter’s hat, which is a motif used reasonably frequently in the artist’s work. Great to see a flurry of Mr Klue pieces this winter, because as many will know I am an admirer of his nicely understated work.

2184. Brick Lane (4)

Sometimes you need to be eagle-eyed. Many of you will be familiar with the work of French artist C215 (Christian Guemy) and will have seen pieces by him in Paris or London, or indeed all over Europe. It is his cats in particular that he is really well known for and here is a rather old looking and very small C215 cat in Brick Lane.

This one was so very well ‘camouflaged’ by all the other busy scrawls on the door that if I had blinked I would have missed it. His work has such a deft touch that brings his pieces to life. I am amazed that in such a small two-tone piece, the character of the cat comes shining through. A brilliantly talented artist.

 

 

1891. Shoreditch, London (9)

I really did get lucky on my recent trip to Shoreditch with fresh pieces, and this is a lovely new one from Osch. The artist is known for two main presentations of his art, this theme of orange circles with silhouetted scenes, usually with a clever take, and his characters (often animals) created from ribbons (not real ribbons you understand).

In this piece it seems the crows are having some kind of revenge moment as a drone is contained within a cage. This is a thoughtful and distinctive piece and so wonderfully crisp, sharp and fresh. I love his work…I think he needs to come to Bristol again.

1814. Upfest 2018 (74)

I am not entirely certain that this is an official Upfest piece, but failure to include it would not be in the spirit of my Upfest write ups. It is a cheeky shutter piece by T-Rex a local artist whose ‘graffiti partner’ Ryder sprayed his trademark tag on the left hand wall of the shop in the feature image.

T-Rex’s dinosaurs are a familiar site in Bristol and at Upfest too and add humour and a lighthearted touch. One of the things I love about these three characters is how the eyes give them each completely different personalities/emotions. Looking left to right, the first looks wary, the second fed up and the third agressive. A bit of fun.

1767. M32 roundabout J3 (97)

It seems to me that most street artists have peaks and troughs in the frequency of street work they do. Life, as for each and every one of us, gets in the way. It might be work, family, illness, lack of inspiration or other external forces that put a slow down on wall work.

On the flip side though there will be times when the green light is on and artists hit the street with sometimes alarming regularity. It feels to me that Smak at the moment is going through one of those phases where I am seeing a lot of his work, and this one at the M32 is a real beauty.

I find I encounter the same peaks and troughs, and at the moment I am really struggling to photograph as much as I like. Frail in-laws and very busy times at work are conspiring to hold me back from what I most enjoy. I know however that things in time will improve and I have so much to look forward to. Somehow I also have to factor in learning how to spray.

720. M32 cycle path (7)

Same place, same artist – here is another reasonably recent piece by Deamze in one of his favoured spots. This is one of his monochrome pieces, which is in the wildstyle plus cartoon character theme that he often adopts.

His monochrome works are really clever, using only shading and black to create a fully functional piece. A bit like watching black and white TV…remember that?

I have no idea who this cartoon character is but can be pretty sure that Deamze has done it justice.
