I think I have said it before that one of the great joys of patrolling the streets in the search of street art is that there are so many unexpected surprises, and each one fills me with a warm feeling inside. This newt/amphibian piece by Silent Hobo at the entrance to St Werburghs tunnel is one such surprise.

I’ve not seen a piece like this by Silent Hobo before, but it is unmistakably his work. The amphibian has some human qualities, for example it is standing upright and has human arms, but the head feet and tail are truly newt-like. It would be interesting to know what the story here is, but I think it was simply something that had been on Silent Hobo’s mind for a little while.

I have posted two recent pieces by Sumo, both were combination works in which a Sumo wrestler featured prominently. This time the artist has gone with letters only, and what beautifully presented letters they are.

Spelling SUMO (unsurprisingly), the letters are woven together in an interesting way in both the design and the fill patterning. A very shadowy drop shadow lifts the piece nicely from the blue buffed background. I haven’t seen any more pieces from Sumo since this one, but live in hope and anticipation for more.

Not too long ago, Creamylines got busy painting birds on columns under the M32. I don’t quite know if this was a practice session or a takeover bit. Whatever the motivation, he has occupied about a dozen or more columns with his long-necked bird portraits.

Of course, I could have photographed every column, and filled this post with birds, but instead have chosen one or two as I think you get the idea. I am really enjoying watching on as Creamylines expands his portfolio and his presence in Bristol.

Today is not a good day from me to write a blog post – I am wrestling with some restructuring at work, and will be up against a dear team colleague, and maybe others, for the only post at my grade that will remain – down from three. Plenty of disruption and upset between now and September when the structure goes live.

This is a beauty from Neddy Ned Ned on the water pumping station at L Dub. Spelling WISKA, the dazzling piece in the bright sunshine is beautifully presented in every aspect. The yellows, pinks and blue background work remarkably well together. Great work from Neddy Ned Ned.

Of course, having only first met Wes a month or two back, I haven’t quite worked since been finding his pieces everywhere, both old and new. This one is tucked away on the swimming pool wall behind a hedge and railing.

This is a very bold piece heavily filled with black paint and incorporating flashes of red and yellow. It is quite unusual to see work quite so heavily dominated with black paint, but Wes gets away with it here by including a white drop shadow and contrasting blue/turquoise backdrop. Interesting piece from Wes.

This is a wonderful, colourful, up beat splash of a piece by Kool Hand, painted as part of a paint jam, I think for Kid Crayon’s birthday, but am not certain.

Kool Hand has been enjoying his writing lately, and he is improving with every new piece. The colour combinations and curvy font make this piece very easy on the eye. Time, I think, to update his impressive gallery of work (just done it).

7593. Brunel Way (355)

Back in his favourite spot, Maybe has started painting his unique dreamy pieces once again after a lengthy break. I haven’t quite worked out his technique in full yet, but he makes good use of stencils to pick out some clear distinctions between different elements of his pieces.

This one features one of his favoured motifs, that of a silhouette face with pursed lips. He has selected some lovely colours, and blended the colour transitions really well. It is so good to see him out and about painting again.

7592. Cumberland Basin

The better weather has definitely produced an uptick in activity in Bristol, and Minto, like so many other artists, has been making up for a quiet winter. This is a classic piece of Minto writing, full of intriguing details and stories.

The letters spell MINTO in a turquoise theme colour throughout. A little character with a hat and sunglasses is towards the left of the piece. Although there is so much going on in this busy piece, everything is in place and the finishing is first class. More to come from the fabulous Minto soon.

Jee See’s work may not be to everyone’s taste, but I have a real soft spot for its authenticity and the way it represents so much of what grassroots street/graffiti art is all about in Bristol. This column piece plays host to one of his signature ‘seismic’ pieces.

The chunky letters form a deep-set block draped down the column. The chrome letters take on an interesting reflective look, picking up on various tints from the light beyond the flyover. Jee See doesn’t paint all that much these days, so I like to post his work when I find it.

I wasn’t expecting to find much at L Dub the last time I went there, because I had it in my head that it tends to be fairly quiet there during the winter months. My assumption was rather scuppered though when I came across quite a few pieces I had never seen before, including this lovely classic style combination piece with a modern look by Veks.

The character is an update on the more traditional b-boy look, wearing a two blue tone hoodie and offering a fist bump with the letters ACAB tattooed on his knuckles. The writing too has a modern feel to it, spelling VEK!. The fill of the letters has a stone or rock appearance, with a couple of cracks running through, and the yellow (gold) drop shadow does an extraordinary at lifting the piece from the wall. Overall a great modern classic.
