1045. Church Road (2)

At the top of Church road there are a whole bunch of reasonably new pieces from members of the ASK crew of which this is one. The three sections are by Soker, Cheo and Deamze, although the Soker and Deamze writing are in exactly the same style and lettering and I am left wondering if only one artist was involved in those bits.

It is a colourful collaboration that is nicely balanced. The Cheo character in the middle is ready to spray…was it in fact this character that sprayed the rest of the piece? Always good to see ASK collaborations around the place.

1036. M32 roundabout J3 (48)

Another quite old one from the archive, this time from Soker. You can see that this was sprayed on an outing with Deamze, on the left and Voyder on the right, all using the same colour palette.

This is nice crisp writing from Soker, and really didn’t deserve to be in my archive for so long. Well it is out there now.

1022. Upfest 2017 (55)

I am always chuffed when I see pieces by Bristol artists at Upfest. The street/graffiti art scene here is so strong and it is great for the city to showcase its own artists to visitors from Bristol itself and from further afield.

Sled One, I have said countless times on Natural Adventures, is one of my favourite street artists and was very busy at Upfest, producing two pieces in South Street Park. I caught up with him for a while and asked him how it was that he doesn’t do so much street work these days. It turns out, and I think I knew this anyway, that he is now working with the Paintsmiths and doing a lot of commissioned work. This he says adds pressure on his free time. He also said it was a different way of doing things and that working to a brief can be quite stressful.

This wonderful piece is creative and utterly bonkers. I do like reptiles in street art, somehow they work so very well. The expression on the chameleon’s face is well observed, and the eye is excellent. Hope to see more of his stuff before too long. Perhaps those nice people at The Paintsmiths could give him some time off.

1014. Church Road top (3)

A recent piece from Cheo on a wall that you need to go looking for. This is the second pairing of Cheo and Soker pieces that I have found here, but I expect they have been spraying here for years.

Some really lovely wildstyle writing and a fun character too. Cheo and his king bee just keep on pleasing. The image below is the last piece he had up here which was photographed in March 2017.

991. North Street Green (9)

Not long after Upfest was over, and just as the dust was settling, this wonderful piece from Bristol’s Cheo appeared in North Street Green. It is a very strong piece, and in my view, far superior to the Morph characters he produced for Upfest.

In this piece he has sprayed a couple of very cool frogs appearently chewing the fat and puffing away on a cigar and cigarette. It is an incredibly neat and crisp piece and in my view shows Cheo at his absolute best.

I’m not too sure how long this would have taken him, but it looks like he took care with it. Yet another great piece from the master.

954. Jamaica Street (10)

This is the third piece from the PRSC outdoor gallery that featured Boogie and Voyder, and is by the organiser of the ‘Boogie Down Bristol’ event and all round godfather of Bristol graffiti, Inkie.

This is a really wonderful piece from Inkie, and I think he was pulling out all the stops on this one to show Boogie what he was made of. The colour selections are great, and match those used by Boogie on the far left of the three. Voyder was clearly on his own agenda.

951. New Stadium Road (3)

In a little pedestrian tunnel, under the M32 motorway are a couple of really great walls. Great for spraying that is…less great for photographing.  This is yet another wonderful collaboration piece from Deamze and Voyder, who always seem to work with Deamze on the left and Voyder on the right. I don’t know if this is a deliberate or subconscious thing, but it is pretty much always the case.

What is particularly captivating about these pieces is the white subject on a pillarbox red background. Deamze has worked a particularly nice bit of wildstyle writing with an interesting cartoon character who looks a little like Captain Klutz from MAD magazine, but isn’t.

Someone out there probably knows who it is. I love the angular style of this piece and the limited colour range. It is a fine piece.

It is becoming very difficult to describe Voyder’s work these days, as I feel he has hit such a high level, and that veach work pushes boundaries and demonstrates his command of his craft.

This is such a beautifully constructed piece and resembles a paper cut out. It is such a pity the photograph just doesn’t do it justice. That red just sets the piece off perfectly.

903. Jamaica Street (8)

There was a recent event held in Bristol, organised by Inkie, entitled ‘Boogie down Bristol’ held at the Full Moon pub. In the days either side of the event, a whole ton of graffiti art and street art went up in the Stokes Croft area.

The PRSC outdoor gallery was one of the walls sprayed. The middle section here is another high-quality piece from one of the best writers around Voyder.

Every piece he produces, and there have been quite a few recently, is a winner. Clean lines, great colour selections and an incredible eye for shading and shadows. Brilliant as always.

897. Dean Lane skate park (65)

When you see a really strong piece of writing like this and it says ASK, you can be pretty sure it is by Sled One, which indeed it is. This is a great work that the photograph fails to capture, there is some flaring on the lens, which is a bit annoying.

Although Sled One has been a little less active on the streets than he was, say a year ago, he is still capable of dazzling us with the quality of his pieces. He makes great choices with his colour selections and takes care with his shadings. I particularly like the eye sitting within the ‘A’, and the accent stars.

888. Upfest 2016 (155)

So I decided to round off this batch of last year’s Upfest posts with a very Bristol piece. This wonderful side of a bus was sprayed by the ASK crew, which comprises a great many of the Bristol graffiti/street artists I have covered in Natural Adventures passim. It would be fitting to end the 2016 posts with this, but I still have plenty more. I have decided to intersperse them with future posts, but obviously I’ll be concentrating on Upfest 2017 over the coming weeks.

Please don’t ask me to identify all the members of ASK, it could take me a while. The ASK (After School Klub) crew tend to dominate the street art scene in Bristol, but there is always plenty of space for others, and I don’t think they are too precious. Great colourful bus, but pretty dismal pictures. Nice eye – probably by Voyder.
