Although he doesn’t paint all that often, Sam Brentnall pretty much always brings a smile to my face with his quirky illustrations of familiar animals and their amusing personalities. This beauty was painted in Lucky Lane as part of the most recent Bristol Mural Collective paint jam.

The piece, painted on a back yard wall with door and garage, takes the form of a reconstructed cow. Of course no real cow looks like this, but the caricature illustration immediately appears as a cow, even though it is mixed up and has green spots instead of black. I love the udders on the door on the left, and the cow’s head cropping a four leaf clover – tapping into the lucky theme of the paint jam. This is a truly charming piece from Sam Brentnall.

I am not 100 percent sure that this piece by Mr Draws is quite there, but I fully admire what he is doing and that he is stretching himself, moving into new and challenging territory. He tells me he is going to be doing more of this environmentally themed work in future, although he will also still be creating his unique writing.

The inspiration for this cow piece came from a picture by George Stubbs, an artist who Mr Draws has recently come across. The cow-zebra drifts in and out of the green background that has a kind of aurora borealis look to it. An interesting and unusual style that I am assured we will be seeing more of from Mr Draws.

3200. M32 Spot (80)

Most of Sled One’s pieces tend to tell a story. Sometimes the stories are quite linear and easy to fathom out. Other times the stories are just too surreal and no amount of creative thinking will help with working it out. This is one such crazy surreal piece.

Painted alongside some of his ASK friends this intricate and detailed piece in great pinks and turquoises appears to show a sheep standing on the shoulders of a cow which is holding a pitchfork. The sheep is milking the poor unfortunate cow whose milk is spilling onton the Soker piece to its right.

Sled One is just getting better and better at these crazy cartoons, but it isn’t just the quality of his painting that amazes, but the creativity of his compositions that makes these pieces so good. Weird and wonderful.

3042. Cattle Market Road (3)

A new piece from Bnie and something really quite different from her. Bnie is an artist that I love, particularly for the fills she uses in her letters. Well, in this large piece there are no letters, only fills on a geometrically divided background.

Five creative and beautifully consistent patterns have been cleverly distributed along the length of the hoarding and there is an oblique reference to cows (Cattle Market Road) in the black and white cow-print pattern. This is a fine piece and sits comfortably with the other artists in this magnificent outdoor gallery.

3037. Cattle Market Road (2)

This is the second outstanding piece from a gathering of great street artists a week or two back orchestrated by The Hass. On Cattle Market Road, a theme has emerged on some of the pieces, involving a cow/cattle, the first one by Sled One that I posted yesterday.

This beauty is of course by Hazard and it really is an absolute stunner. Hazard talked about this a little in her Instagram feed saying that the vibrant red colours were chosen to reflect the sizzling lay hot day on which the piece was painted. The cow is magnificent, but it is the whole composition that screams out Hazard, with the amazing flowers and soft touch she creates with her spraying.

I hope that these hoardings remains intact for a while and that the taggers keep clear, because here we have a great showcase of Bristol talent.

3034. Cattle Market Road (1)

This is one of five new pieces on Cattle Market Road on the previously blank hoardings that are on the southern perimeter of the development site behind Templemeads Station that should have been Bristol’s new concert venue. The session from a week ago was co-ordinated by The Hass and the opportunity arose through Out of Hand.

This extraordinary piece is by Sled One and is a welcome return by the artist – I believe this to be his first piece in the city since lock down measures were eased. The outstanding piece tells the story of the site, from a cattle market to the chaotic development site it has become, illustrated by a wrecking ball crashing across the piece on a gold chain. The cow, or more accurately bull, is looking a little crazy and is part of the narrative that recalls that when the place was a cattle holding space a bull escaped and terrorised the locals. As you would expect from the artist, this is an imaginative piece full of movement and wonder. First class (a little reference to the Royal Mail/Parcelforce buildings that were derelict/knocked down to create this development opportunity).
