3156. Dean Lane skate park (346)

This is a real statement piece of graffiti writing from Smak down at Dean Lane and amply demonstrates why he is one of the very best writers in Bristol and probably the country. His pieces are elaborate with so many interlocking parts all seamlessly brought together with clean crisp lines.

The colour palette is similar to one I have seen him use before and works well on the dark background. There are to many elements in this piece to be able to describe them all, but consistent with several pieces by the artist you get more for your money, with two SMAKs visible in places, most obviously with the A.

On his Instagram feed, Smak mentioned that a little kid told him he could paint jellyfish, so Smak decided to add one for good measure – that is why it is there. Another monster piece from Smak.

3151. Dean Lane skate park (345)

Mr Penfold is well known in Bristol for his abstract murals and commissions dotted about the city, and also for his studio work. He is a fine designer with a very distinct style. Every now and again he lets his hair down with a fun cartoon piece like this one in Dean Lane.

This dog Is a happy dog and is brilliantly clean. All the lines are perfect and all the fills solid. Sometimes less is more and this is a perfect example of that. The splashes of white on the nose and tongue are rather special. I love this piece and others like it by Mr Penfold.

It is always a treat to find an Inkie piece, and to come across two new ones in the space of about month is a great excuse for celebration. This one appeared a week or two back on the long wall at Dean Lane alongside Soker and Zooki (an artist I am unfamilar with).

The shapes of the letters and the style of 3D fills are so recognisable in his work and it only takes a second to identify his pieces. The colour transitions in the fills are expert an the overall colour selections with the blue 3D shading and red clouds are brave, but work fantasticlly well. A fine piece from a top artist, and a nice tribute to Desire.

Although he is nowhere near as prolific as he has been in the past, Mr Draws is still managing to paint from time to time. This is a recent piece from Dean Lane that emphasises his willinngness to try new ideas and constantly push his boundaries.

The piece is in two distinct halves split horizontally, with a wobbly four colour stripe filled top half and a three colour freeform fill on the bottom half. It is an eyecatching piece and I would like to see more from the artist, but appreciate that these are not easy times for anyone.

Laic217 keeps knocking it out of the park (skate park in this instance). This is a piece that was painted for the Dean Lane Hardcore event a few weeks back and captures the atmosphere and essence of the event brilliantly.

The skateboarding skeleton is smoking and drinking and the rather tatty looking skateboard is on fire with the tricks being demonstrated. Somehow, Laic217 has managed to work the perspective of the crouching skeleton in a way that shows the movement and forces while calmly holding a beer can in his left hand.

Next to this piece are the three rabbits by Nevergiveup that I posted a few days ago holding up score cards for the achievements of Laic217’s skater. My assessment for the artwork is a 10, 10, 10.

3127. Dean Lane skate park (341)

This is a small quick one from Pekoe painted underneath one of the ramps at Dean Lane skate park around the time of the DLH event. I think that Pejoe has painted a piece here once before and I’ll try and dig it out and add it to the end of this post.

This one is a little more multi-coloured in the face than her usual pieces, but you can see that it was probably painted quite quickly, lacking the finesse of some of her other work. It is a lovely piece nonetheless and for once no tears. Nice to see a cheeky little Smak tag thrown in too.

3121. Dean Lane skate park (340)

I am really struggling with the new WordPress editor. Everything takes twice as long as it should, and there is simply too much functionality for a user like me. I just want to write posts on my blog, not design up a personal website. Oh well, I’m sure I will get better at it with practice, which is something that definitely applies to street/graffiti art, and when you see apiece like this from Rusk, you know that it is on the back of a huge amount of hard graft over the years.

The overall design of the letters and the selection of chrome and green are very nicely done. At the right hand end of the RUSKY letters is a muscle-flexing spray can squirting a neon green jet of life into the piece… a nice character. A fabulous piece from a highly accomplished writer and complete gentleman.

Before I start this post, may I say just how much I dislike the new WordPress editor. It is utterly pants, and although it appears to have more functionality, writing a post takes about twice as long as commands are a little more buried in the architecture. Moan over.

This is something of a curiosity, it is a Hire piece that looks unlike any other Hire piece I have ever seen before. I don’t know what prompted this departure from his usual style, but it is a hugely accomplished piece and one that should give him the confidence to experiment further.

Set on a black background with a pink grid on the lower half and silhouetted skyline above it, Hir has written a four letter word that looks like DIAK, although I can’t be sure about that. There are very few hints that this might be by Hire other than the lower parts of the letters have his distinctive sharp edge to them. Be really interested to see where Hir goes from here.

3116. Dean Lane skate park (339)

Every year, usually in May I think, there is a special event held at Dean Lane skate park called Dean Lane Hardcore. It is a skating event with live music, where the good, the bad and the ugly of Bristol gather to hang out and have a great time. DLH is also a great time for street artists to show off their talent.

This piece shows three Nevergiveup rabbits holding up score cards to judge the skaters’ performances. The craziness of these guys reflects well the craziness of the event itself. Beautifully painted and perfectly in context, this little trio is a real winning piece.

Cort is one of Bristol’s regulars who will often be found painting alongside Laic217 but occasionally paints alone. His writing is quite different from other people’s and has a very distinctive font which is perfectly demonstarted in this piece.

Painted on a grey-buffed wall the letters spell out KORT . These have a nice 3D shading off to the left and contain some nicely painted red dots. Adding a bit of interest behind the lettering is a red splosh and some little orange circles for good measure. A nice touch is the two yellow rings joining the O and R of the piece. Great work.
