Another day and another monster character from Mote, although this one is a little different from his others. I am guessing that this is a representation of a jellyfish kind of creature, and the wobbly border line would probably confirm this.
Mote, Cumberland Basin, Bristol, February 2023
Unusually, Mote has signed this piece and I can’t think of any other occasion when he has done this, so that comes as a bit of a surprise. If I am honest, I’m not sure that the wobbly line thing works too well, but it is great to see the artist experimenting and stretching himself. Another one for the menagerie.
This is a real statement piece of graffiti writing from Smak down at Dean Lane and amply demonstrates why he is one of the very best writers in Bristol and probably the country. His pieces are elaborate with so many interlocking parts all seamlessly brought together with clean crisp lines.
Smak, Dean Lane, Bristol, August 2020
The colour palette is similar to one I have seen him use before and works well on the dark background. There are to many elements in this piece to be able to describe them all, but consistent with several pieces by the artist you get more for your money, with two SMAKs visible in places, most obviously with the A.

On his Instagram feed, Smak mentioned that a little kid told him he could paint jellyfish, so Smak decided to add one for good measure – that is why it is there. Another monster piece from Smak.
I round off the first 10 Upfest 2018 posts with this rather nice little shutter piece by Silk Crystal, which was one of at least two ‘extras’ that accompanied his official Upfest piece. This happens a lot on North Street, and I would think that probably upwards of 40% of shutters there have been enhanced by Upfest artists over the years.
Silk Crystal street art, Upfest, Bristol, July 2018
Silk Crystal is a silk screen and street art company that operates around the North Devon coast and works a lot to commissions. This particular piece chimes for me with its marine theme (a lot of these this year) and certainly improves the shutter – now to get to work on the rest of the shop’s appearance!
My absolute favourite piece of the year so far. This is an outstanding collaboration between two of the Bristol ASK masters, Sepr and 3Dom. As well as the composition, which is brilliant, the location is also cleverly chosen.
Sepr and 3Dom, Princes’ Place, Bristol, February 2018
This wall was home to a 3Dom piece of writing that had remained here for a long time, completely untouched. I do hope that this piece is offered the same level of respect. On the left is a snorkeler in blue, with gold trunks and a starfish on his head expertly sprayed by Sepr.
Sepr and 3Dom, Princes’ Place, Bristol, February 2018
If this isn’t weird enough, 3Dom has painted the most incredible jelly fish in rich and vibrant tones wearing a WW2 sea mine on its bell and with a chain trailing behind in its tentacles. A thing of quirkiness and real beauty.

The whole thing comes together magnificently, the contrasting colour palettes of each artist marking their work but combining in the centre of the piece. So sharp and fresh, this is a really high quality piece. being in quite a narrow lane, it is quite difficult to capture in a phiotograph, but it is a real beauty.
