You can always rely on ObjectØØØ to be very present when there is some political action going on. At the start of March he and DNT took over several of the arches at the Carriageworks and posted a huge and rather crude protest banner piece for a march in London, protesting against cuts in the National Health Service (NHS).
The highlight had to be the central picture of Theresa May kissing Donald Trump, obviously referencing their little ‘love in’ when May visited Trump shortly after his electoral triumph, also referencing the potential privatisation plans that the Tories have with American health insurance companies, also referencing this unforgettable image of Trump kissing Boris Johnson by the Paintsmiths prior to the Brexit vote. Who’d have thought we would be in this dreadful state right here right now. Grief.
While technically not as strong as the Paintsmiths piece, the image still has impact. Power to the people!
I really enjoy the political edge that street art brings to us, and one artist more than any other in Bristol, challenges the status quo and presents us with philosophical and political thoughts. ObjectØØØ.
It is a while since I posted anything from the arches of the Carriageworks, but things have become busy there recently. This piece by ObjectØØØ is of an organic robotic creature and carries a stark warning:
‘As all these incredible new technologies come online, who benefits? The warmongers and profiteers. Maybe technology can save us, but not in the hands of self-serving elites…‘
This is ObjectØØØ in full flow and at his creative best. Full of rage, anger and passion. I love this piece. RESIST.
I love the passionate and political messages contained in the works of Object∅∅∅. In this piece, which sadly only lasted a few days, he seems to be having a swipe at those who eradicate or remove street art with their ‘anti-graff’ paint. I guess his target is Bristol City Council, although I can’t be sure.
I like the plastic bag containing ObjectØØØ’s spray cans – there is something really functional and worthy about keeping your paints in an old plastic bag – it is beautifully painted too.
Another political message and contorted body from the philosophical ObjectØØØ. The tunnels of the Bearpit provide probably the best space in Bristol for political comment as the area attracts some of the most socially deprived or uncared for people in the city. It is a place where culture and the impacts of government cuts converge in an angry outpouring and sense of injustice.
ObjectØØØ’s pieces always capture this sense of outrage – you are never in doubt about what he cares about. It is good that he chooses to do something about it through his artwork. This is a powerful piece, carrying the slogan ‘lucky not better’. In the piece, ObjectØØØ has painted a pained figure, a fallen angel maybe, appearing to crash to the ground. His trademark feathers and wing mark this out as one of his works. A really great piece.
Back to the Bearpit and some recent work by ObjectØØØ. As always his very individual style carries with it so much emotion and passion combined with political statement. The figures in his work always feel distorted and tortured by struggle against inequity.
This piece is located at the end of the tunnel where the artificial light meets the daylight, and it is really hard to get a decent photograph, but I have done my best. I like to feature ObjectØØØ’s work whenever I find it because I am fascinated by how much the artist invests himself in his work.
The commentary is a little ambiguous, but I think I know what he is getting at. Great to see some new work from this unusual street artist.
A couple of weekends ago I took a stroll over to the tunnel at St Werberghs, as there is always something new to look at there. I am not all that fond of tunnels for street art, because the light is always a bit orange and the photographs never do the works the justice they deserve. It is the same with Leake Street tunnel in London.
On this trip I caught up with the fabulous and very original ObjectØØØ. He was just putting the finishing touches on his rather satanic looking piece. Once again his work is characterised by tentacles and wings…I love that. I particularly like the very organic feel that his works have. No straight lines, rarely any sharp edges or lines, subtle colour ranges…it’s all good.
Most importantly ObjectØØØ is a really nice guy and he makes time to chat with passers by who admire his work or stop to look at it. I look forward to some more chance encounters with him.
Meeting the artists was, for me, one of the great pleasures of being at Upfest this year, and so it was with stopping to chat for a while with ObjectØØØ. Heaven only knows how he and other artists managed to get on with their work with all the interruptions.
ObjectØØØ is an artist I have been watching develop over the last year, as he has taken more to the street art scene. His works are so very distinct…unlike anything else I have seen on the streets. More of his works here and here.
This is another great piece by him and carries all the hallmarks of his work: a contorted body, a bird wing, tentacles and a phrase he uses a lot ‘eat the rich’. I find his work unusual and also rather inspiring. His work oozes with angst and rage but to me also seems to be striving for a freedom just out of reach.
I do hope I’m not turning into too much of a street art critic/bore.
