2473. Dean Lane skate park (251)

It feels like an absolute age (and it probably is) since I last posted anything from Jee See, and here on one of the ramps at Dean Lane he recently painrted this little collaboration piece with Pekoe. I think it might have been at the rescheduled DLH (Dean Lane Hardcore) event a couple of weekends back.

Jee See has written a rather nice 3D rendition of his moniker which adopts a whole load of very nicely done shadings, hatchings, drips, cracks and colour fades. So good to see him back in action.

Just to the right of Jee See’s writing is another one of Pekoe’s beautiful ladies in blue, a colour she often favours, and with a little tear beneath her eye – what does this tear tell us about the srtist? Is there some inherent sadness there? There is a clue in the top right of the piece which indicates that it is a tribute to Janet. Tribute pieces are often painted with a little extra love and have a poignancy to them.

I am so enjoying finding and appreciating Pekoe’s work which just seems to be on a steady improvement.

2392. Brunel Way Bridge (16)

Wowzer… this is quite the best piece I have seen by Pekoe yet. It is beautiful and I truly believe that in this piece we are witnessing an artist reaching a new level, I see it as a really significant piece. The blue-faced portrait has something very special about it, the expression, the tone, the confidence and of course that amazing hair.

In this piece I feel that Pekoe’s naive style has transformed into something altogether more sophisticated and mature, and I love it. I would like to think that a lot of thought, care and effort went into this piece, it certainly looks really tight.

The patterns in the hair are so typically Pekoe, but the addition of three layers of base colour add an extra dimension. The eyes too work well with several dots in each creating a glassy effect, very clever. There is so much to like about this work. Bravo Pekoe!

2386. Dean Lane skate park (240)

This is a favourite spot for small pieces under one of the ramps at Dean Lane skatepark and has recently been painted by Pekoe. I have an awful lot of time for her work and am really enjoying seeing the journey she is on and the improvements she is making.

This piece demonstrates so well her naive art style which is in fact more complex than might first meet the eye. She is known for producing female portraits with ‘big hair’ which is always carefully thought out and beautifully executed. There is obvious emotion in this piece too with the word ‘cry’ written over the top and tears on the girl’s face. All good, although the location merans that its longevity will be very limited. Glad to haver captured it.

2345. Hepburn Road (10)

I don’t often venture too far down Hepburn Road, but am very glad indeed that I did so on this occasion, because I was greeted by this wonderful protrait by Pekoe. The observant among you will also notice the oil drum has been decorated by Ryder.

Pekoe seems to be producing quite a lot of work at the moment and with each piece there are surprises and improvements. In this one she has made a great effort with decorating the hair in a style that resembles a nimber of PWA artists. I like what she has done with the lips and the eye, using white to create the effect of reflections. A little gem from this Bristol artist.

2334. Wilder Street (35)

Painted for the St Paul’s carnival, this is a wonderful collaboration by Decay and Pekoe. Of course the colour scheme of red, gold and green is wholly commensurate with the colours of the festival, the colours of the Rastafarian movement.

On the left is another stunning Decay piece in his full writing form, see previous post. There is such confidence now in this form which contains some regular features, such as the ‘rays’ in the top half of his letters, and of course his character, Chuck, as the letter ‘e’.

On the right is a joyful collection of faces, representing the local community looking on in wonder. I do think that Pekoe’s naive style captures the expression and mood of people in a way that is uncomplicated and unpretentious. I love her work.

Altogether, this is a fabulous and time -appropriate collaboration. Great to see these two working together.

2300. Brunel Way Bridge (14)

This column piece under Brunel Way bridge is unmistakably by Pekoe, and what a pleasant surprise it was to find it on a recent trip to the whole Cumberland Basin area. The last work from Pekoe that I saw was a collaboration with Mr Sleven at the M32 roundabout, which was rather splendid as I recall.

This small piece, which is typically bright and colourful, includes a theme that Pekoe is very fond of, a third eye. I don’t know what these columns are like to paint, but I can tell you that they are a devil to photograph because of the variable light, and because cameras can’t take pictures round corners, or at least mine can’t. Nice work from Pekoe.

2141. M32 roundabout J3 (137)

Great to see this amazing collaboration between Pekoe and Mr Sleven lurking to the far left of one of the walls of the M32 roundabout. I’m not sure if I have seen a collaboration between these two before, although I do know they paint together quite a lot.

The green portrait on the left is by the wonderful Pekoe and resembles a rather attractive Shrek-type ogre, or is it the empath from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Neither probably, but a striking image nonetheless. Great hair.

The writing by Mr Sleven is in a really unusual style, appearing almost as if it is organic in some way. The letters spell out SLEV, wityh the ‘V’ being a heart. Is this love between the two artists? I have no idea, but this is a neat collaboration brought together nicely with the green colour shared between both halves.

1656. St Werburghs tunnel (36)

Only recently on my radar, and now I see her work everywhere. This is a great fun piece by Pekoe in St Werburghs tunnel (a spot that is hosting some really great art lately) which displays her trademark third eye and female portrait.

What make this particular piece so appealing in my eyes is the nicely crafted bubblegum and the way it obscures all that lies behind it with just a hint of transparency. I am enjoying my voyage of discovery with this artist.

1547. Stokes Croft Corner wall (7)

Once you get your eye in for a particular artist, it seems that you see their work absolutely everywhere, and so it is with Pekoe. Her work was, until recently, off my radar until I saw a piece at the M32 roundabout. Since then I have found three more pieces dotted about the place, including this one and an Upfest piece.

This interesting work was painted as part of a collaboration which included Mr Sleven and one other. Pekoe appears to be fond of the third eye and its symbolism, as it appears in other work. I am still learning about her work and style, and really look forward to discovering more.

1539. Upfest 2017 (172)

Well, well, well, the gifts just keep coming. Regular readers will know that I have only recently discovered the wonderful art of Pekoe and I have featured her work a couple of times in the last month. It turns out that while I was going through another batch of pictures from my Upfest 2017 archive, I found this piece by an ‘unknown’ artist who I now know is Pekoe. I love it when this kind of thing happens.

Her Upfest piece was definitely one that caught the eye and is rather more polished than some of her street work – it is a festival after all. She sticks with the female portrait formula that appears to be her preferred subject matter. I am reliably informed by Gary, the art blogger that this wea actually a collaboration piece with Mr Sleven and DNT.
