2755. St Werburghs tunnel (143)

Yay, let’s hear it for the boys whose recent collaboration in the tunnel is full of happiness, music and soul. Last year, Face 1st and Soap went through a period of not collaborating for whatever reason, but they seem unstoppable just now with several walls that this pair have painted already this year.

On the left of the piece is a nice piece of writing from Face 1st with a beautifully worked horizontal gradation through his lettering and a decent 3D effect using a vanishing point underneath. On the right is a cheerful mariachi singer surrounding the whole collaboration with happy notes from his guitar. I’m not too sure if Soap has ever actually played a guitar, but the left hand is gripping the neck in a rather awkward upside-down position. Overall a wonderful and joyful piece.

2650. St Werburghs tunnel (124)

Not exactly a Christmas Day kind of piece, but one I photographed in the tunnel of St Werburghs way back in July this year and have only just got round to posting because… well just because.

Soap, St Werburghs, Bristol, July 2019
Soap, St Werburghs, Bristol, July 2019

It is a rather nice collaboration between Soap (a regular on these pages) on the left and Bad Taste on the right. Soap was undergoing something of a renaissance during the summer and seemed to be churning out bright and happy pieces of which this is a super example.

Bad Taste, St Werburghs, Bristol, July 2019

I know nothing about Bad Taste and can only think that he/she was a visitor to Bristol who’d hooked up with Soap to find a cool place to paint. The rat is really nicely painted and stood out from the crowd in the tunnel for quite some time I seem to recall.

Now get back to your turkey (or vegetarian alternative) and enjoy the rest of this joyous Christmas Day.

2612. M32 Cycle path (43)

Yet another fine PWA (Pirate Wall Art) production from Soap and Face 1st down under the M32 along the cycle path. I think that this is quite a good wet-weather spot, because there is a small overhang to protect the wall and artists from the rain.

Soap, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, November 2019
Soap, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, November 2019

On the left is a ‘traditional’ soap face, with two mouths agape. Looked at onother way, the shape can be seen as a kind of skull, with the mouths forming the eyes or eye sockets – that’s what I see at least.

Face 1st, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, November 2019
Face 1st, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, November 2019

On the right is a Face 1st ‘beauty’ in a rather unseemly situation, vomiting toxic looking stuff. Now I’ve noticed that in recent weeeks Face 1st has been animating his faces with things like this, to tell more of a story than simply creating a pretty thing to look at. His faces are beginning to convey sadness, frustration, disgust, nausea and so on. An interesting development and great to see.

2547. M32 Cycle path (35)

How fantastic to see these two PWA artists hooking up again after what feels like way too long. Soap and Face 1st have been painting buddies for a long time, but lately have been doing their own thing. I was beginning to think that they might have fallen out and may maybe they had, so it was with some relief  that I came across this fine collaboration on the M32 cycle path.

Soap and Face 1st, M32 cycle path, Bristol, October 2019

The collaboration itself is a lovely crisp piece, which is tapping into Face 1st’s recent theme of a crying face, which I interpret as a metaphor for the desperate state of our nation. This collaboration is really tight and one of my favourites that this pair have produced. The yellow boundary contains the two elements into a ‘proper’ collaboration of shared paint and merged ideas rather than the loose collaboration of when artists paint different things together.

2504. St Mark’s Avenue (3)

In my favourite recently discovered spot, St Mark’s Avenue in Easton, is this great collaboration between Soap and Zake which I had seen previously on Instagram, but never knew where it was. Well now I know.

Zake, St Mark's Avenue, Bristol, September 2019
Zake, St Mark’s Avenue, Bristol, September 2019

On the left is a portrait by Zake that unusually for this alleyway has been altered by some idiot, goofing the eyes and the lips This is a real shame because it gives the character a completely different and rather sinister ‘personality’ than that of the original. Even though it has been altered, I felt it worth including, partly to demonstrate that not everything I get to see is in its perfect pristine state and also to explain why I try to get out regularly to find new pieces before they have been tagged or ruined.

Soap, St Mark's Avenue, Bristol, September 2019
Soap, St Mark’s Avenue, Bristol, September 2019

On the right is some colourful and uplifting writing fro Soap. The photograph is a little bit rubbish, partly because of the rather unhelpful wheelie bin and also because of the width of the lane at this point is quite tight and ‘front on’ pictures are an impossibility without a wide angle lens. Unlike much of the work in this lane it is relatively recent and was painted this year. As an aside, the tag on the bin is one that can be found pretty much everywhere in Bristol – I don’t know the tagger’s name, but it is probably concealed somewhere within the tag.

2415. Brunel Way Bridge (20)

There is something a little understated about this piece by Soap on the footpath under Brunel Way. It is a fine piece of writing spelling out SOAP with nice fills and background, and something of a cosmic feel about it, but for me it just falls shy of the mark, and I can’t get my head round why.

Soap, Brunel Way, Bristol, August 2019
Soap, Brunel Way, Bristol, August 2019

After a very active spring and early summer, Soap seems to have slowed down a little more recently, maybe he has been away or been working hard, or equally possible I have just missed his works – I cannot be everywhere all of the time. Looking forward to seeing more of his stuff soon.

2275. M32 roundabout J3 (149)

Wahey! Another sensational Soap piece, and it seems like there is absolutely no stopping him at the moment… he’s on a roll. This is a crazy and eclectic piece that draws on a whole bunch of styles, patterns and colours to spell out SOAP.

Soap, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2019
Soap, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2019

I just get the feeling every time I see his work that there is a lot of joy going on at the moment and it really comes across in his work. With some artists you can spot angst or pain or sadness or perfectionism and so on, but Soap’s work simply screams out happiness.

2274. Dean Lane skate park (222)

Great to see Soap and Tasha Bee teaming up to paint this collaboration in Dean Lane skate park. What is interesting about this piece is that both artists are doing something a little different from what we normally see.

Soap, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2019
Soap, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2019

I’m not too sure why, but Soap has been doing a few chickens recently. I think it might be a bit of a legacy from a mini paint jam he took part in at St Werburghs City Farm. I think I have some pictures somewhere. I rather like the way that he has done a speech bubble with his tag in it. A fun piece.

Tasha Bee, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2019
Tasha Bee, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2019

Tasha Bee has been doing a bit of writing recently to accompany her beautiful styalized portraits and her choice of letters is LUNA. I think that she rather likes the symbolism of the moon and skies, of nature and love. Luna is a really great word and will lend itself to all sorts of writing variations. I totally adore her colour selections here and I have been using similar colours in my ‘teach yourself spray painting’ activities. Note to self, ‘get hold of some of that gold’. Very nice collaboration.

2219. Sandbed Road

There is a rather fun thing going on in Bristol at the moment, and it is the rise of Reseau, a loose crew with Panskaribas at its heart. Reseau pulls together several artists who enjoy painting together, but each time the composition of the collaboration seems to shift around a little.

Stupid Stupid Meathole and Panskaribas, Sandbed Road, Bristol, May 2019
Stupid Stupid Meathole and Panskaribas, Sandbed Road, Bristol, May 2019

This collaboration is full of fun and positivity and on the left is a Stupid Stupid Meathole sandwich with a Panskaribas filling. The Panskaribas character holding a flower appears to be dancing and really ticks all my boxes, and the worms by Stupid Stupid Meathole have a rather cuddly and bemused appearance.

Stupid Stupid Meathole and Soap, Sandbed Road, Bristol, May 2019

On the right is a sensational Soap character with a beautifully intricate patterning, so beautifully done. I am really enjoying the freshness that Reseau is bringing.
