5369. Cumberland Basin

Susannah Peacock is a Bristol artist and illustrator, who, I understand from our conversations, has designed some very successful greetings cards and is also responsible for ‘decorating’ one of the Bristol Unicorns currently on display in the city. Her work is especially appealing to children, having that picture book illustration style.

The mermaid mural was painted over two or three days of the Bristol Mural Collective’s paint jam a few weeks back. The work in progress shot demonstrated how much work went into the piece. There is no doubt that the BMC paint jams introduce a whole new aspect to the street art scene and gives studio artists the opportunity to express themselves on large outdoor, public ‘canvasses’.

We live in a crazy world. Technically speaking there are no legal walls in Bristol, and yet it is one of the most decorated cities in the UK. Everyone who paints walls in Bristol without permission is at risk of being arrested. Although a ‘blind-eye’ approach tends to prevail, it doesn’t mean that enforcement doesn’t happen. It would make so much sense to introduce some curated legal walls for so many talented artists to make use of. Maybe one day…

What an absolute pleasure to see Pura Decadencia back painting walls in Bristol, after quite an absence, with this magnificent piece on the long wall under Brunel Way. I think that she must have either been out of the country or busy with real life, but whatever the absence, it is great to see her back painting walls.

This piece reminds me of the first of hers that I posted in January 2021. She spells out her name with nice curvy bubble style letters and combines them with a couple of wicked mouths, complete with vampire teeth, biting into the letters or licking them with a long tongue. The background and fills are really nicely worked too. I look forward to more from Pura Decadencia.

From Bacerlona, an artist whose work I have definitely seen and captured before, makes his Natural Adventures debut with this assured and vibrant piece of graffiti writing down at Dean Lane. The Spanish artist is one of several who meet up at weekends under the loose crew name of Sunday Lovers.

I haven’t yet worked out what the letters spell, but they are similar in style, to a certain extent, to those painted by Claro_que_sssnoh, in particular the arrows and rows of diminishing spots. The piece is joyful and leaps off the wall, with plenty of detail and different shapes to feast upon. I have to say that I really like this piece and need to be more mindful of posting his work, perhaps going back through my archives and digging some of it out.

Stiff, St Werburghs, Bristol, June 2023

I managed to snap this piece by Stiff just before heading off on my holiday, which I was pleased about, because, for whatever reason, his work never seems to last very long. His work tends to be on the alien theme and in this piece a red monster is sticking its toothy tongue (?) out of a very toothy mouth.

Stiff pretty much always paints on a black background, which tends to bring a focus on the monster/alien. Red on black works very well, and this is a striking piece. There appears to be a square speech bubble at the base of the piece, but it contains nothing – I am not too sure what that is all about. It is always great to find one of Stiff’s sporadic pieces.

In the spring of this year, I became aware of some seagull (these days simply known as gulls) portraits appearing in most of the north Bristol graffiti spots. I haven’t posted any until now, because I wasn’t sure who was responsible for them. It turns out (with thanks to Paul H) that the artist is called Mr Crawls.

The gull, which has a very pleasing design formed out of a couple of circles, fits into the kind of mega-tag category, in which the basic design changes little from piece to piece, and the stamp/brand becomes highly recognisable – other artists who do this include TES (Slim Pickings), Asre and Mr Underbite. The gull looks like he is a little worse for wear, and rather American in his fishing-style bucket hat. Expect to see more from Mr Crawls.

Although totally unplanned, I have managed to post two consecutive pieces from the same wall. The previous one was by Dibz, with his tag-style graffiti, and this one from Todoaciem is a delightful calligraffiti script piece, which is really rather unusual.

Todoaciem and Stivs probably jointly hold the crown for calligraffiti in Bristol, and you can understand why. This piece takes the regular standard form of calligraffiti to a new level by introducing a script-style font and the result is really effective. Painted on a blue and green bubble background, the whole thing is a delicious feast for the eye.

Dibz, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2023

Back in old Blighty, but what a disappointment – it has been windy and raining almost constantly since we landed at Heathrow yesterday. I knew we should have gone away for two weeks. The only thing I have missed is the dog, and a ready supply of street/graffiti art to keep me sane.

Dibz, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2023
Dibz, Dean Lane, Bristol, May 2023

This is a remarkable and clever piece from Dibz which has been painted to look like a tag drawn with a marker pen, and just to illustrate the point he has included a character hand with a pen to the right of the writing. The tag-style writing spells out Dibz One, and, as if we needed further evidence, demonstrates the depth of Dibz’ supreme skill.

Super-quick one this morning, travelling day. Benjimagnetic has painted this super piece on the M32 roundabout, full of vibrancy, colour and movement. It probably spells BEN, I think I can see it, because that is what he tends to write.

This might be the most colourful Benjimagnetic piece that I have seen – perhaps he was using up dregs. All the signature elements are here in this piece. Gotta go. Normal service should resume tomorrow.

Mote, Brunel Way, Bristol, June 2023

A really short one today, written last night, while trying to sort out the impacts from our cancelled flight home to Bristol, and packing etc. Mote has done a wonderful thing with this large, rather cuddly monster, complete with four legs and an underslung jaw with a couple of goofy teeth.

The fills are dreamy and the design quirky and unique. There is something very loveable about this monster, and the execution is top drawer.

At long last Lupa makes her debut on Natural Adventures, and not before time. I have a whole bunch of pieces by her, but for reasons unknown to anyone, including myself, this is the first here on this blog.

Lupa, Peel Street Green, Bristol, June 2023

There is a freedom and joy in Lupa’s work that lifts the heart. In this piece the blue letters are set on a pink background – it’s that winning pink/blue combo working hard once again. The fills create  great sense of depth, with their cosmic appearance, and the white details add interest as well. The three shapes above the ‘U’ have the appearance of a crown, in this appealing piece. I also really like the slightly rough and ready presentation, which allows a freedom of expression, that some more precise and on-point pieces occasionally lack. A great first to share with you.
