It is always a pleasure to come across a Pl8o piece, even more so since I met him. There is something about his letter choice that really appeals to me, so not only is it a nice bit of word play, the shapes of the letters work really nicely together.
In this piece, Pl8o has reverted to his big block letters after a brief flirtation with script, although the dep 3D shadings he favours are not present in this one. A decent enough throwie (throw up) and another to add to his repertoire.
I don’t visit this area nearly as often as I used to. In the olden days when I walked to the office (a dim and distant memory) I would often take a little detour up Nine Tree Hill and along Armada Place. My reduction in walking this way has coincided with a significant downward shift in turnover of pieces in the locality, indeed across much of the Stokes Croft area. It was rather a nice surprise therefore to come across these three little tag-pieces from PWA crew’s Face 1st, Soap and Nightwayss.
I am a bit of a fan of decorating utility boxes, which in their regimented green or black monochrome colours are eyesores that pollute every street in every village, town and city in the UK. Decorating these boxes is not legal, but in my view most welcome, and in some cities around the world is actively welcomed or even commissioned… imaging that. The three pieces here are quick throw ups, probably painted in haste. The monkey is by Nightwayss, the face by Face 1st and the mouth/skull by Soap. These are the key signature elements of each of the three artists.
The three artists have decorated one box each and brightened up this little corner immeasurably. I am sure that some people will see this as thoughtless vandalism and be quite angry about it. This is the spice of life.
Over the last three or four months, Slakarts has been rather busy with his three-quarter profile throw-up character, and probably produced more of these than his regular and rather more complex faces. This one is on one of the tunnel entrances of the M32 roundabout. There is an interesting artefact of photography, light and paint in this piece… in the feature photograph you can see the ghosts of old graffiti underneath the white parts, but in the content photograph below, the white fill is simply white. Curious.
I rather like this one from Slakarts because it is a little bit more finessed than some of the others in this series. The black lines are clean and the blue outlines work very well indeed. More of these in the archive!
I shouldn’t think that I will be writing too many more posts from this end of Wilder Street in the future because behind this hoarding is a major new development (probably student accommodation) that is moving apace as the whole district becomes gentrified. In the meantime we can expect artists like Face 1st to continue decorating the hoardings until they come down.
This piece is going back to Face 1st basics, with a smiling girl with very big hair in blue and red spelling out FACE. From the look of it I would say that Face 1st probably sprayed this pretty quickly as all the elements are there, but the finessing isn’t quite what it could be. A lovely characterful piece nonetheless.
It seems that most places I look I find a piece by Pl8o, and they are usually superb too. He fits into a category alongside Phour of artists that I have only relatively recently posted on Natural Adventures, but whose work I have been photographing for quite a long while… a visit to the archives may well be on the cards.
Pl8o would appear to favour this spot and area of Bristol for his work although I have seen his writing elsewhere. This looks like a bit of a ‘quick one’ painted over at least two older pieces of writing – time to buff the wall I say. Even though the background is a bit messy and distracting, the shape and form of Pl8o’s letters is great – he has chosen some excellent letters/number to work with. I like this throw up, there is a sense of joy about it.
I can definitely say that is has been a joy to start finding new pieces dotted around Bristol, and I expect a surge of street/graffiti art over the coming weeks as artists come out of full lock down. Some will inevitable end up in my archive for another day, but I will try to post as many as I am able.
This is a super-quick one from Daz Cat in bright and cheerful colours. I really rather like it, and although it is definitely a little bit rough around the edges, it is a striking piece (and one I can use for a future Thurdsay doors post).
This ‘throw up’ (a very quickly sprayed freestyle piece) was crafted by Decay on the same day (Friday 8th April 2016) that I wrote about this piece.
It is very simple and also very powerful, Decay could have a career in logo design! The initials DK obviously have driven his ‘Decay’ moniker. This is a nice crisp striking piece in one of the tunnels at the Bearpit.
Unfortunately, this has been ‘taken out’ in the words of Decay as have nearly all the Bearpit tunnel pieces by a Bristol tagger called DBK. It is a pity, but this is what DBK does, and all the other artists know this and, I guess, just put up with it.

This ‘burner’ (straightforward lettering or word) is attributed to Bristol artist Deamze, although I am having difficulty confirming it. It has been slapped up on a derelict shop front. Looking at earlier photographs of this tribute on the Interweb, shows just how rapidly this building is crumbling. A forgotten side street, but Mibzy is not forgotten.
