Sometimes street art is edgy, sometimes political, and sometimes just great fun, and this collaboration by Dave Sharp and #DFTE falls into that latter category. The two pieces on a black buffed wall leap out at you, and it is a sour old soul that couldn’t find something to like about it.

To the left is a fabulous SpongeBob SquarePants piece, by an artist I don’t think I have come across before, Dave Sharp, and what a great job he has done, bringing the children’s cartoon character to life. To the right is a typical philosophical phrase from #DFTE, albeit in a much larger format than his smaller framed pieces. “Happiness is being confidently weird” – I think I can live with that. Nice drips, by the way.

Sometimes it is possible to be completely ‘graffiti blind’, and when I was admiring this piece, but trying to work out the artist, DJ Perks arrived to photograph some other pieces on this wall. This piece was obviously classy, but I couldn’t work out who it was by, DJ Perks instantly said it was by Kosc. Of course it was. I just didn’t see it at first. My credibility was shot down in flames, but it happens sometimes. Not seeing the wood for the trees.

At least I had recognised that it was a classy piece, which it most certainly is. Kosc has written under another name in the past, and there are some giveaway clues that this was his work, in the ‘riveting’ used in some of the letters to ‘hold them together’. Great colour transitions and letter shapes. Pure class.

One of the things that is happening on Natural Adventures of late is that some artists are simply not being represented as much as they might deserve, because of the sheer volume of new pieces being painted every day of the week. One of those artists is Biers, whose WD40 pieces continue to appear all over town.

This is a decent orange and green piece with a grey spotty feature running through it. I am not too sure what the character is, but he looks like he is up to no good, as if he is a gangster or burglar or something like that. It is his work that has turned the green colour to grey. This is a nice piece from Biers that has a story to tell.

I am missing my regular dose of Daz Cat pieces this year… he definitely seems to be on a bit of a go slow as far as work on the streets is concerned. It was a nice surprise, therefore, to find this new piece up at Purdown recently. The battery area has been closed for a period, while the council constructed a tarmac pathway through the site, which I must say is a huge improvement, because it is prone to get extremely muddy in the winter.

This piece, counter-intuitively, is of two dogs, and the portraits are rather sophisticated, taking in different view points of the dog’s faces. This is an absolutely lovely piece and seems a little bit more earnest than some of his comic or satirical work. I like it a lot, especially as the green one could easily be a portrait of my very own canine.

4613. Brunel Way (166)

I was lucky enough to run into Mote when he was painting this larger-than-usual piece on the long wall under Brunel Way. And managed to have a good chat until the dog decided he’d had enough and started barking, he can be a real conversation-killer sometimes that dog of mine, although he was brilliantly behaved in Cheltenham the whole time we were there.

Mote is possibly the most productive artist in Bristol at the moment, and his pastel shades that he tends to use are a real hallmark of his work – If you’re looking for brash reds or gold or chrome, you’re unlikely to find them in his work, and you’ll have to settle for subtle.

This monster piece seems to show a monster snacking on a double ended other monster, although it is not altogether clear. As always with Mote’s work, the lines are precise and clean, the fills solid without underlying work seeping through. Creative and imaginative, Mote continues to dazzle us with his work.

It looks like Aspire made great use of his time in Bristol for Upfest, and left behind this little extra piece in Devon Road, a spot he has painted in before when he lived in the city. I will never tire of Aspire’s beautiful birds and pixelated aberrations, and still feel sad that he left Bristol for London a few years ago.

Although he has painted dozens of different species of bird, he seems to return blue tits most frequently. The bird is stunning, and the incorporation of the street sign inspirational. I don’t have the writing skills to express how much I like Aspire’s work, suffice it to say I think it is awesome.

4611. Moon Street (95)

Many of you will know that Moon Street is one of my absolute favourite street art spots, although that accolade has possibly moved on a little in recent years due to the gentrification of the area. But even now, Face 1st continues to brighten the place up with his inimitable and irrepressible style, making me feel very much at home with this lovely piece.

Face 1st was one of the very first street artists I became familiar with, but it was a few years before I got to meet him in person. His work is at the heart of what I care about, and this piece is just so joyful and typical of the atmosphere he creates around his work. The girl with green hair in red dungarees is full of cheek and movement. My eye keeps getting drawn to the underside of her left shoe… it is completely absorbing. A nice piece to start the weekend with.
