There was a period early last year, when it felt like every available space in multiple spots was being filled with a portrait mega-tag by Asre, aka Runaway Joey. These distinctive characters are based on the same central core elements, but they are ‘pimped’, so that each has a distinctive look and theme. This is a mini-gallery of pieces by Asre from April last year. At another point in time, I will have to do another of these galleries to sweep up a bunch of other Asre pieces in the first half of 2022.

Asre, Jamaica Street, Bristol, April 2022

This was a small piece in Jamaica Street that reflects the basic character template.

A Moon Street cheeky character wearing a red hat, beautifully picked out with the customary three layered thick border.

Asre shows his versatility with this quick column piece under the M32.

Rounding off this mini-gallery with a piece behind the fence in Dean Lane, this time the character is wearing a blue hat.

One of the curious things is that Asre’s prolific activity simply dropped off a cliff later in the year, so I guess there might have been a lifestyle change at some point. It would be nice to think that he will return to our streets in due course.

I rarely miss posting anything by Hire if I can help it, so I was surprised to find this outstanding piece from this gifted artist in my March archive. On the upside, I guess, I am sharing it with you now. Even though I am currently going through an unpublished back-catalogue of street art, there is at least 50% still unpublished, which gives me a minor panic attack.

The striking colours used in this piece are divine and the writing itself, spelling HIRE, is outstandingly painted. The fine lines cutting through the middle of each letter is what elevates this writing from the good to the exceptional. This is an absolute belter of a piece from a lovely artist.

Another fine piece that got overlooked in my February postings last year is this magnificent work from Saor. On a dull winter day, the orange elements of the piece really cut through and draw the eye in. The piece was painted alongside NTS crew mate Mudra.

I may have said it before, but Saor’s style reminds me quite a lot of Epok’s work (what has happened to Epok – I wonder). The concept is highly designed and very cleanly finished, almost as if it was painted with fine brushes. I particularly like the shadow behind the right-hand side of the orange letters. As always from Saor, a nicely conceived piece, brilliantly executed.

This gorgeous Christmas treat from Ceus brings him back to a wall that he is really rather fond of, and one which is where I first became aware of his fine writing. There appears to be a Battle Royale going on with the warm and cold colour selections used in the piece, producing a stunning effect.

Ceus has settled into a great rhythm with his graffiti writing in Bristol, and he is fast establishing himself within the community. I love it that we have such a vibrant overseas community of artists in Bristol, adding a multicultural layer to the already enormous spectrum of street art that we are privileged to see here

Acer One and Andy Council, Dean Lane, Bristol, December 2022

Here is more prof that we do occasionally get the odd sprinkling of snow here in Bristol. I took these pictures about two weeks ago, and this collaboration is a very nice tribute to a close friend of many artists, Dring, who sadly passed away recently. You couldn’t want for a finer tribute than this one by Acer One and Andy Council.

The letters are by Acer One, beautifully designed with a sensational two-part graded fill and double shadow. The robot monster character (iconic character Chechen Wizard – thank you Paul H) in the middle is by Andy Council and is representative of a new direction being adopted by the artist – it will be interesting to see where this leads. OK – I have to sign off now for a couple of days of family revelry.

Rusk and Shade One, Dean Lane, Bristol, December 2022

This is an absolutely stunning collaborative wall by Rusk and Shade One, and is a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.

The Rusk writing on the left spells out STONE, in magnificent blue letters with a regal shiny gold 3D drop shadow to die for. Perfectly written and presented, why would I expect anything less from Rusk?

The awesome portrait of Chadwick Boseman by Shade One captures a fabulous sideways glance which really catches the eye. Shade One’s work has gone stratospheric of late, moving from the cartoon or figurative style into a more photorealistic style. A very fine collaboration indeed.

Mote always pleases with his clean and simple designs of monsters that can be found pretty much everywhere in Bristol. This beautiful (ugly) pair are on the small part of the curved wall in Dean Lane skate park.

I think that Mote’s work is a great example of why it is important to buff a wall for best results. Imagine if these two characters were painted directly onto a messy wall without the clean background, the balance and status of the characters would be completely lost. I love these giant doodles, and have enjoyed the ride this year with Mote’s appearance on the Bristol scene. I am really looking forward to seeing how he can develop his style next year as he gains experience and new skills. Thanks for all the monsters.

Mr Draws, Dean Lane, Bristol, December 2022

Although he doesn’t paint anywhere near as often as he used to, Mr Draws is an important regular on the Bristol scene and his ‘DRAW’ letters are an essential staple for anyone who enjoys graffiti writing in the city.

This photograph is proof that we do occasionally get a bit of snow in Bristol, and although this snow event didn’t amount to much, it was bloody cold for about a week or so. We have returned to a climate changed warm period now though. Coincidentally Mr Draws’ piece has a wintery flavour to it, and it works rather nicely with the snowy foreground. This is a nicely executed and finished piece from Mr Draws.

Trafficity, Dean Lane, Bristol, December 2022

Constantly out there in the background, rarely taking centre stage, is the magnificent Trafficity with his incredibly consistent form of letters spelling out ZIOM. This time, the PAD crew member ha painted on the swimming pool wall behind the railings.

Every time I see Trafficity’s work, I wonder if there is an extra line of letters running across the top, in this case the purple section, or whether it is just an artefact of his letter styling. I guess that I’ll just have to ask him next time I see him, although because He doesn’t paint all that frequently, it might be some time before that happens. It is always great to see his work.

Another classy piece from Saor alongside his NTS friends on the long wall at Dean Lane. His work is so on-point, always neat and tidy. He achieves this without the comfort of borders, which means that all of his lines have to be cut-in perfectly, which is a terrific skill.

The blues and yellows on a grey background work very well and are in line with the colour scheme for the whole collaborative wall. The stylised letters SAOR give way to some animation in the middle of the piece, with elements of a smiley face. This is an outstanding piece, which, to be fair, is consistent with most of his work.
