3729. M32 Cycle path (130)

Like so many graffiti writers in Bristol I just don’t seem to post nearly as much from Alos as I could or should. I have a lot of pieces in the archive, and perhaps I’ll have to dig them out sometime. Thanks to Paul H, I know that the pronunciation of Alos name is like aloes, as in hellos, which is all rather nice.

Alos is another artist whose letters are irregular and unconventional and more often than not written in monochrome, with some nice little details running through the letters. The style is similar to Whos and their work can often be found side by side.

From a little while ago, this beauty by Daz Cat seems to have slipped the net… until now.  This door has undergone many transformations and is a good candidate for a Thursday Doors post in the future.

Daz Cat has been one of Bristol’s most consistent character artists over the past twelve months, apparently undeterred by any impacts of COVID-19. His pieces can be found all over the city and range from quick cat face throw ups to elaborate and beautifully painted story pieces, in fact I believe he might have painted a new one at St George skate park only yesterday. Always great to see.

I have to take my hat off to Claro for even attempting to paint this wall, but to do it so well is truly awesome. This bit of wall on the M32 cycle path is made of stone and is very textured, horrible and lumpy and bumpy, not that you’d know it from looking at this piece by Claro.

Claro’s style is so very distinct and quite unlike anyone else’s in Bristol. Spelling out HONS his writing combines curves with angular straight lines that at times looks quite uncomfortable if you know what I mean. The letters on their own might be a little boring, but with all the decorations and border colours, the whole thing ends up looking pretty good. More to come soon.

As mentioned previously, Lee Roy has had an exceptionally busy spring, and although he has been painting for a while he only appeared on my radar in February this year, and for every piece posted, there is at least another one in the archive.

What I like about Lee Roy is that he is constantly rethinking his work and his most recent ‘reimagining’, to use a contemporary word, has been to drape his pieces onto the ground and cascading down steps as in this example from the M32 cycle path. A great idea very nicely executed. Inevitably, there is more to come from the artist.

Here is another fine piece from the slightly unloveable Turoe. This wall is in my view one of the best in Bristol, but it rarely fulfils its potential. I would love to see it fully buffed and some large-scale collaborations painted on it because these days it tends to look a bit messy.

This ‘shyte’ piece was painted back in April and stands out in chrome on a hot yellow, orange and red background. This is a classic wildstyle burner and another in the vast collection of pieces from Turoe.

I had to take two attempts to get photographs of this wonderful piece of writing from Teao One along the M32 cycle path. When the sun is behind this wall (which seems to be most of the time), it darkens the wall and anything on it and because my photographic skills on my point-and-shoot camera aren’t up to scratch, I can’t accommodate very well for these challenging light conditions.

Fortunately the piece was very much intact when I returned. Teao One is something of a sleeping giant who has taken to writing again and is doing so in a way that seems to be making up for lost time. His style is utterly brilliant and his letters, fills and decorations very tight indeed. It is so good to have met him on a couple of occasions now and he seems like a really nice guy. Great new work from an old-timer.

Another flurry of activity from Face 1st and Soap, whom are really making my life very difficult at the moment with their productivity and quality of work. If their stuff was rubbish, then I could easily ignore it and move on, but it is not and I feel compelled to post it whenever possible.

This pair of PWA artists have collaborated in this spot quite a few times over the years and their friendship appears to be as strong as ever. The collaboration is a Kill the Bill piece, which will meet with a lot of sympathy in Bristol. Another cheerful expression on this happy girl from Face 1st with a subtle FACE written into her hair.

Soap has reverted to a standard form of his iconic skull/mouths design, and the character is holding up a protest banner. The fill is very nicely blended with some nice decorations. The whole collaboration is set on a pinky cloudy kind of backdrop and ticks a lot of boxes for me. Nice work.

As a matter of pragmatic protocol I shall refer to Claro_que_sssnoh as Claro for the duration of this post, although very interesting, his name is without doubt the most difficult to type, especially on an iPad. Fortunately, his street art work is much easier to enjoy and assimilate.

This reasonably recent piece from the HMR man is so typical of his unique style. Interlocking letters spelling out HONS are formed with a combination of straight and curvy lines in equal measure and he decorates the piece with a plethora of graffiti arrows. Always good to see work from one of our talented Spanish writers.

Another artist who appears to have woken up a little of late is Veks who has teamed up several times lately with his friend and painting partner Turoe. This character portrait piece was part of a collaboration with Turoe and Teao One from a week or two back.

This old school style portrait would appear to be autobiographical, with the words ‘we don’t learn… 80s kids’  posted next to it… perhaps even a self-portrait of a younger Veks? The cartoony piece is very nicely done and just in case you weren’t too sure about the artist, the letters VEK are tattooed onto the characters fingers.

In life, you just know when something special or significant has happened, there is that supernatural sense that kicks in, the one that heightens your senses and gets the adrenaline pumping. For me, I would class finding this masterpiece (a word I rarely use on Natural Adventures) by Laic217 was one of those special moments.

Laic217, M32 Cycle path, Bristol, April 2021

Adding to this special sensation was that I didn’t know the piece was here and I hadn’t seen any posts on social media – it felt like a proper discovery rather than seeking a piece out.

Laic217 has smashed it. The familiar skeleton figure is set on a sumptuous red background with a fine yellow border framing the piece nicely. A bucket hat with a yin yang emblem and a blue dragon made of smoke dancing round the skeleton’s head. The cherry on the top of this extraordinary piece is the short-sleeved shirt. Laic217 is known for his incredible portrayal of different materials and fabrics and here he has taken it to another level. The black shirt with its creases and two dragon designs is utterly awesome, and I love the vest poking through the vee of the shirt.

A magical piece, and guess what… I love it.
