A nice quick one from Mr Draws, which was to mark the arrival of storm Emma, one of a couple of snow events that hit the UK and Bristol during March this year.
I like this piece, it is modest and unassuming, but contains some lovely little details inside the dull chrome letters. As ever, always good to see Mr Draws’ work.
A few weeks back there was a bit of an informal paint jam at the M32, with artists from Swansea, Cardiff, Tiverton and Taunton all represented. I managed to be there at the right time and photograph the artists at work. The interesting thing for me was that most of these artists/graff writers were completely new to me.
This is a lovely piece by Karm Amoe from Cardiff. He has a website, but it doesn’t say too much and appears to be incomplete, so I really don’t have too much information on the artist.
There is something very pleasing about the form of his letters, and the colours he has selected are outstanding. The swirly pattern at the base of the piece and white at the top adds some real class. Nice to be able to see something new (to me).
I always enjoy featuring new artists on this blog. Of course they are not necessarily new artists, and may even be well established, it is just that they have only recently entered my consciousness. This fun cartoon-style piece is by Nevla who I think is a local artist/designer whose street work seems to be centred around the M32 roundabout and area.
In this piece, he has given himself enough red background to allow his character in greyscale to stand out. It is a nice piece and I will be interested to see how his work develops over time. I have photographs of several more of his works and will be posting them in due course.
I do like Mr Draws. It has been fun following his progress over the last three or so years and seeing his unstoppable enthusiasm for experimentation. His pieces are raw and creative, but not the highly polished design pieces we see from several other Bristol writers.
Mr Draws ploughs his own furrow and will not be intimidated by any nonsensical hierarchy – he just gets on and does what he loves. I caught up with him while he was spraying this unusual piece and he announced that he was going to be moving to Berlin later in the year. I will definitely miss tracking down his work, but I think he will have an amazing time.
This week artists from all over the globe have been finding out whether their applications to paint at Upfest 2018 have been accepted. Mr Draws has made the cut and will be there.
Although it would seem that J. Dior is now long gone from the city of Bristol, there are still a few legacy pieces of his dotted around, and still several in my archives.
His deliverately naive style allows him to create characters and tell stories with ease. There is no doubting his imagination, but I think that at times his attitude and approach to painting upset some of the other artists in Bristol a little. Anyhow here we have a two-headed woman with a superhero top on – superheroes seemed to be a regular theme for J. Dior. This work is just a little bit of fun.
Ryder’s work can be found all over Bristol, and increasingly I am enjoying his particular style of writing. In this piece he has gone for some really bright colours and a spotty fill to the deep shadow. His characteristic eyes and teeth filling some of the spaces in the lettering.
Whether it is with his RAW mates, T-Rex, Rusk or Smak, or on his own, Ryder consistently turns out great work.
A wonderful new collaboration between Ryder and T-Rex which was part of an informal paint jam organised by Smak. Unfortunately many of the pieces sprayed on the Saturday were sprayed over by the Sunday. I think this one remains.
This is quite a common format for this pair, with Ryder spelling out his name in the centre, and dinosaurs book-ending the writing. The orange and blue combination work nicely, especially on such a dull day. Ryder often inserts eyes and teeth into his letters to give them a bit more character.
T-Rex’s T-rexs are always fun to see, and can be found all over the city. The one on the left has been painted running down the hill towards the letters, making really good use of the site.
Finally the dinosaur on the right is emerging from the bushes making a stealthy attack. Altogether this is a nicely executed and fun collaboration.
I took a rather more extensive walk than I usually do around the M32 Spot recently, and found some walls and artwork I have not been aware of before, which goes to show that it is always worth looking round that next corner or through that next underpass.
This is a lovely stencil piece from Kin Dose, whose work occasionally appears on the streets of Bristol and never fails to grab your attention. His owl is on one of the columns under the M32, and probably goes unnoticed by many who are marching head down crossing from one side of the motorway to the other.
Other amazing work by Kin Dose includes a scary clown and cat, both of which were painted at the Carriageworks in Stokes Croft.
I am not entirely certain, but I think this piece is by Hemper. For sure the writing spells HEMP, but it is possiblt this is a drug reference and nothing at all to do with Hemper. Whoever it is by, it is a nice bit of chrome writing set on a green and purple wall for a background.
Walls seem to feature a lot in street art. I suppose that along with spray cans, walls are one half of the tools of the trade. This is a nice piece that seems to have stood the test of time in a location that normally has a high turnover. Finally, who can’t agree with the statement ‘homes for all’?
This is the first time I have posted any work by Corupt although I have seen tons of his stuff over the years. As a graffiti writer I think he likes to stay well under the radar, and I have only once seen him at work, and I think he quite wanted to keep a low profile.
I have seen a lot of his work on the walls at Dean Lane skate park and here at the M32 roundabout. It seems to me that he rather favours these high up spots, often above other works. I think the idea is that if he sprays high up, his work will be there for longer. Seems to make sense to me.
I must confess that I haven’t paid too much attention to his writing, although I see quite a lot of it, but am breaking that habit now with these first two works. I haven’t yet formed an opinion about his work, which all seems to conform to a particular style format.
Both of these are colourful works, and I will enjoy posting more and seeing how his work develops over time.
