Buser and Mr SCE, River Avon, Bristol, April 2025

This wonderful collaboration piece alongside the Bristol Avon came as a complete surprise. I am familiar with Buser, but I have never seen anything by Mr SCE before and assume that he was visiting.

The combination collaboration shares some commonality with the orange blast around the writing and portrait. Buser’s letters are well crafted although the colour combination is a little too overpowering for me, and there is quite a lot of brown in there. I am beginning to wonder if brown is the colour of 2025.

The two-tone portrait by Mr SCE is beautifully painted and it is a bit of a shame that it is so off the beaten track, although it is likely to remain here longer than in some of the more accessible spots in Bristol. Such is the quality of this portrait, that I will certainly be looking out for Mr SCE’s work in the future.

Werm, River Avon, Bristol, March 2025
Werm, River Avon, Bristol, March 2025

Werm is becoming one of those consistent, drumbeat graffiti writers whose work is always there and reminds us what the Bristol street/graffiti art scene is all about. His current style takes us through his playing with symmetry of the letters WERM, forever striving for perfection.

In addition to his beautifully presented letters, Werm has set the piece on a pattern of pixelated cubes, adding just enough interest to lift the piece. Unfortunately, the afternoon sun has crept into the right-hand half of these pictures, but that is a daily hazard when photographing street art… and bins, and parked cars etc.

Foksymoron, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025
Foksymoron, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

Although he has been present across the city for a few years, Foksymoron (great name) has upped his game in the last few months and is becoming more prominent in both placement and size of his pieces.

This fox, alongside the River Avon fits the space really well, looking as if the for is loitering with intent. Hands in pockets and looking rather pleased with his cool look, the fox is a simple design which Foksymoron seems to be able to replicate with considerable ease. Bristol foxes… part of our urban furniture, both real and painted.

Omie, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025
Omie, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

I don’t visit this spot as often as some of the others, as it is a little further to drive for me and more difficult to squeeze into a lunchtime break. The upshot is that when I do go, there are usually a few new pieces for me to enjoy.

Omie is an artist who only came onto my radar about 18 months ago, and he has been turning out a wonderful variety of pieces in that time. He is a creative artist who changes his style completely with each new piece. The more I look at this one, the more I like it.

His chunky block letters in two shades of green and with a deep drop shadow are decorated with what I can only describe as what looks like drizzles of chocolate sauce or marmite (take your pick) running through the midline. A really clever idea and beautifully executed. The letters are set on a contrasting background of pink and orange bubbles, which provide contrast and help the piece stand out on the busy wall. Great stuff.

Bloem, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025
Bloem, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

Bloem has started 2025, where she left off in 2024, in fine form, producing both tremendous graffiti writing and street art pieces in equal measure. In this combination piece, Bloem has managed to bring together some stunning line calligraffiti writing and some artwork that is heavy on some of her favourite themes.

The writing spells out BLOEM, and is quite distinct from the rest of the piece, appearing and disappearing, playing tricks with your eyes. The centrepiece is a blue hand with long fingernails (why is this not a surprise?), and the clever bit is the creeping grey flowers running through the hand and breaking out of it at different points. Bloem is one of the most creative people I have met and is a natural talent, whether on the street, or making jewellery. This is a fabulous piece that underpins her status as a rising star.

Grimes, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025
Grimes, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

Grimes is my graffiti writer of the moment. He is turning out some quite miraculous pieces that are bursting with energy and colour. As if to prove that he is far from a ‘one-trick pony’, he has produced this rather more sober piece, squeezed into a tight space alongside the River Avon.

Grimes, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

The beautifully designed letters spell out GRIME, and have taken on some earthy colours; greens, browns and greys. Grimes has included some cool fills on some of the letters, but generally the decoration is toned-down. There are no highlights, and so the letters remain flat on the wall and there is little 3D effect achieved. This is a well executed piece, which may well have been a ‘quick one’ by the artist, but is beautifully finished nonetheless.

Sub, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025
Sub, River Avon, Bristol, February 2025

Alas, we leave France today, our skiing adventure over for at least another year, but it will be good to get home and reunite with our son who has returned from his travels in Thailand. I haven’t left myself much time to write today’s posts, as we have an early transfer down the mountain to Chamberis airport. I will start with this piece from the ever-improving Sub.

Big bold black letters (only three of them) have customary deep drop shadows in grey, creating a chunkiness Sub specialises in. Some random pink splatters break up the large black surfaces. A wispy blue background finishes the piece nicely, with a few subtle spots mixed in. Sub is a very busy boy.

Biers, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025
Biers, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025

There are some artists in Bristol that I simply take for granted, in so much as I expect to find their work on a reasonably regular basis, while others may paint in fits and starts. Biers is one of those whose presence is always out there, and it is not difficult to stumble upon new work by him that I haven’t seen before.

Biers, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025
Biers, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025

These rather nice WD40 letters in pink work really nicely on the green background, and the letters have been a little bit compressed into his short-form. When Biers incorporates characters to create combination pieces, the letters tend to sprawl out a little bit more. Some interesting fills, and a smattering of inverted crosses finish the piece off nicely.

Grimes, River Avon, Bristol, January 2024
Grimes, River Avon, Bristol, January 2024

Another piece from the archives, and it is one from Grimes that I must have photographed before I knew who the artist was, and held back as I rarely post unattributed work. This one was taken back in January last year, and may have been the first time I became aware of his outstanding graffiti writing work.

The fruity colours are ones that he really seems to enjoy using, and I have to say that it is the colour palette decisions that he makes that have drawn me into his work, that and the energy that emanates from his pieces. There is a busyness about this piece with the colours and all of the fill patterns, but somehow he gets away with it and it doesn’t feel like hard work viewing it, which can happen sometimes with busy pieces. Nice work from Grimes, who incidentally is a really lovely bloke.

Werm, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025
Werm, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025

This is a neat and tidy piece of Winter writing from Werm painted in his symmetrical theme design. What is particularly attractive about this piece is that the proportions work really well, and it is really tight.

Werm, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025
Werm, River Avon, Bristol, January 2025

Orange and green are common colour combinations in graffiti writing and are colours that work extremely well together. It looks like Werm too his time with this piece, as all the lines are nice and straight, the fills accurate and the highlights very nicely placed. First-class writing from Werm.
