2327. Devon Road (11)

This is the second piece I have found from relative newcomer, Conrico. In fact I found this one before I came across the diver piece that I posted yesterday. Any artist who recreates Dr Seuss art in any form gets a big (Seuss-like) thumbs up from me.

This writing, bookended by the Lorax and some trufula trees, is nicely done, and the whole piece has an air of calm about it. His style, and I can’t quite pin it down just yet, is a little rough at the edges, and I mean that simply in the sense that it is not crisp and clean like the work of Cheo, for example.

I am really looking forward to seeing what Conrico can do, and like very much what I have seen so far.

2312. Devon Road (10)

This wall was painted my the irrepressible Nightwayss during the Easton Art Trail and can be found on a small road just off the dog-leg of Devon Road. It is a wonderfully creative piece, with a tortoise carryinga boogie box on his back.

As with all Nightwayss’ pieces there is a monkey, in fact there are two, playing with the casette door and buttons. I am thoroughly enjoying his work at the moment which is usually presented in blacks and greys with splashes of colour to lift the whole thing. He is being a very, very busy man.

1975. Devon Road (9)

Following my post of a fabulous Xenz piece in Shoreditch a few days ago, I was reminded about this old one on a garage door in Devon Road, Bristol. I had to trawl through my archives and was thrilled to find it… a task that might sound simpler than it is.

This is a simple piece, perfect for the garage, lifting it out of the bland and ordinary to become a thing of beauty as well as practicality. If only more of the carbuncles and eyesores of our city could be similarly transformed. There is a strong sense of calm in this painting and a connection with nature that I find uplifting. The bee eaters are beautiful too.

1627. Devon Road (8)

Set against dramatic skies, that I don’t recall being as dramatic as they look in these pictures, is one of the greatest murals in Bristol to date. This is a masterpiece by the utterly brilliant fine artist Andrew Burns Colwill.

Taking up an entire wall of an end-of-terrace building the mural depicts a fabulous representation of the diverse cultural heritage of Easton. This is a part of Bristol that has embraced multi-culturalism and celebrates it with an annual feast.

I am not fully acquainted with all the characters that ABC has depicted here but I am pretty sure that they will be well known characters and figureheads from the Easton community.

I love the feast, I love the celebration, I love the sky and I love Andrew Burns Colwill. I truly believe he is one of the great story tellers of our city and he tells the stories through his vivid paintings. A true gent and a man I admire greatly – Andrew Burns Colwill is one of the outstanding talents of the city and represents much about its outspoken independence, its unique place in the UK, its tolerence, its rage, its compassion and acceptance.

1626. Devon Road (7)

Oh I just love it when I make new finds when I am actually looking for something completely different and stumble upon something like this. I was driving round Easton hunting down Andrew Burns Colwill’s new mural when I drove up Devon Road – a funny road that has a dog-leg layout, one part of which is a back street and the other a fairly busy main road.

This is of course by Deamze, and I just don’t know how it fell outside my radar, but I am glad I found it nonetheless. Even better is that I know who the character references are which can’t be said for a lot of the 80s and 90s cartoon characters that Deamze uses.

The character is the robot Bender from the TV series by Matt Groening (creator of the Simpsons – who have featured big time at Upfest 2018). It is all very good, and Deamze’s wildstyle writing is exceptional as always. I love the freshness of this piece.

394. Devon Road (7)

A little jaunt back to May this year, in fact polling day if I remember correctly, when I made my first and so far only trip down to Devon Road. So many treats in one day in one road.

This is not the only Deamze work in the road, there is also his Ren and Stimpy. I am not too good on cartoon characters, especially ones that weren’t part of my growing up, so I am not too sure who this little character is (is it batfink?)…nor the frog, Not that it matters too much, it is another great work by the master.

335. Devon Road (6)

Let me take you back a short while to a gorgeous May day, when I discovered for the first time the wonders of Devon Road. This is a place where the local community wanted to brighten up their back street and so invited some of Bristol’s street artists to paint back doors, gates and walls. The result is absolutely wonderful and this is, in my mind, one of the highlights.

This brilliant piece by Sepr contains many of the themes he uses in his work. We have two young women playing instruments, in this instance snare drums and high-hats cast in monochrome on a delicious blue background.

I have been holding on to this piece for a long while, keeping it close…behaving a little like Gollum. It is my ‘precious’ you see. Well sort of. Now it is out there for all to enjoy. And if you get to Devon Road, be sure to stop and enjoy this piece.

272. Devon Road (5)

This is another piece from my very happy trip to Devon Road back in Early May 2016. At the time of the visit, I wasn’t familiar with the work of Mr Draws, but have recently posted works by him in The Bearpit and at Dean Lane skate park.

This piece incorporates his trademark mountain range with wonderful colour selection and form rippling across the piece. I am growing more fond of his work, which at first, I must confess, left me a little cold.

247. Devon Road (4)

Another lovely piece from the extraordinary outdoor gallery, AKA Devon Road. This cat in a deckchair is by one of the godfathers of Bristol street art – Rowdy, and contains all his hallmarks, as you can see from looking at this previous post.

I think that there is at least one other artist involved in this piece, but somewhat disconnected from our feline friend. I am not sure who the artist is.

There is something wonderfully laid back and ‘Bristol’ about the work of Rowdy. Highly accomplished, distinctive, relaxed and mildly anarchic – great stuff.

228. Devon Road (3)

I’m still excited by Devon Road. This is an exceptional piece by the brilliant Sepr. Typical of his pieces, it is in shades of gray and features a musician, in this case a guitarist.

The mustachioed character has a continental look about him and there is something rather peaceful about the work. I can almost hear the music.

I think it is fairly obvious, but I am a big fan of Sepr’s work and to find this near-perfect mural in Devon Road made me very happy indeed. Imagine my surprise when I came upon another one just around the corner. More on that one soon.
