2959. M32 roundabout J3 (212)

What a very pleasant surprise finding this piece was. I haven’t seen a new piece from Angry Face for a few years, so stumbling across this one in the middle of the M32 roundabout a few days ago was a really great feeling. Of course it is all over Instagram now, but when I saw it I didn’t know about it and there is always something special about that feeling of discovery.

Angry Face is one of those artists whose work delivers what it says ‘on the tin’, in his case… an angry face. Sometimes his work can be a bit rough and ready, but this one is rather neat and has some really nice detail. What you are guaranteed to get with this artist is a bit of edge. Really looking forward to seeing more from Angry Face soon.

2957. Stapleton Road

I took a little tour of Bristol hot spots yesterday and there is a lot of new work to write about and post but I fear I will not get to share it all immdeiately. This piece was from a few days ago and is tucked under a railway bridge on Stapleton Road. It is of course by Face 1st.

This is a nice ‘traditional’ Face 1st piece with a pretty face and the word FACE spelled out in the hair. The colours are bright and the piece cheerful. You have to be quick though at the moment as turnover is very high. Another recent piece by the artist at the M32 roundabout lasted only moments… I missed it.

2945. M32 roundabout J3 (210)

Even though I don’t know the artists (yes artists), I have posted this for two reasons. Firstly I love the composition and transition of blues and secondly because I discovered a piece I had never seen before while photographing the blue faces.

The blue faces piece, although relatively simple in design has been beautifully executed, with each face in a slightly different shade nestling neatly with the one next to it. The eyes give each face a different expression. It looks like it has been signed LEF. Take a good look at the top left hand corner of the piece and you can see a little piece of installation art that has been overpainted…

This is a piece which I assume had been in situ for some time, but which I had not noticed ever before. It is the kind of work that Will Coles might do, but it is not quite his style. Entitled mammal, it reveals bare breasts (something of a rarity in Bristol street art). I love this, and liked it even more for discovering it accidentally.

Two pieces for the price of one, but both artists unknown to me.

2943. Brunel Way bridge (31)

Often, the columns under Brunel Way are a bit scruffy, because they are painted over and over again but rarely buffed which means that sometimes pieces blend into one another or the eye is easily distracted. Fortunately that is not the case with this delightful piece by Tasha Bee from October last year.

Two faces for the price of one in this lovely piece and superbly filled and decorated hair in the style we have come to associate with Tasha Bee. I love it that her work incorporates symbols and icons, in this case the peace sign and a yin yang symbol, adding to the mystery and otherness of her work. This is how to decorate a column!

2932. Hepburn Road (16)

No retrospective romp through the archives would be complete without a piece from Face 1st, and this one in Hepburn Road from July 2018 is a real beauty. This piece is one of his more ‘traditional’ single face pieces with a hairdo that cryptically spells out FACE.

I had mistakenly thought that this was from The Bearpit, because there is not much to go on, but I am pretty sure it is actually from Hepburn Road. One of the dangers of not posting immediately. Great colours, great shapes, great smile, great work.

2904. Shoreditch, London

Street art posts in Natural Adventures are dominated by Bristol artists, I know and understand the culture (a little) in the city and feel comfortable writing about the art I see. The same cannot be said for other places. I tend to hold back on writing too much about the work I see on my trips outside Bristol because there are other chroniclers who do it so much better with so much more knowledge. Most of the photographs I take in London never get posted, but the break in new art in Bristol imposed by lock down means that I can visit my London archives and share some nice art with you.

Mr Cenz, Shoreditch, London, November 2018
Mr Cenz, Shoreditch, London, November 2018

This is a gorgeous piece by Mr Cenz in Shorditch that I photographed in November 2018, and I have a feeling that it was still pretty fresh and clean and probably not that old. Everything you expect to see from a Mr Cenz piece is here and it is absolutely stunning. It would be great if he could pay us a visit in Bristol some time – we’d have to find him a good wall though.

2903. Star and Garter (5)

When I find pieces by Tasha Bee in my archive it only reinforces my sadness that it has been quite some while since I last saw a new piece by her. She has been busy with other projects, but I hope her absence from the street art scene is only temporary.

Tasha Bee, Star and Garter, Bristol, November 2018
Tasha Bee, Star and Garter, Bristol, November 2018

This piece on the wall of the Star and Garter from November 2018 is truly beautiful. Her style is instantly recognisable and often solemn, although there is the slightest hint of cheekyness in this girls face – or is that just me? Great colours and so typically Tasha Bee.

2897. Bedminster

I don’t quite remember exactly the name of the road that this stunning Feoflip piece is in, but it is in Bedminster off East Street I think. Just one of the amazing legacy of works left behind by the artist during and after Upfest 2016. I like everything about this artist – his style and soft colour choices, his attention to finding the right spot and his adventurous spirit.

Feoflip, Bedminster, Bristol, July 2017
Feoflip, Bedminster, Bristol, July 2017

This Picassoesque face in grey shades on the mustard yellow background works perfectly on the red brick wall. Feoflip seems to have developed a technique that generates splatty thin lines that create the detail in his work and give it a really interesting texture. Unlike any other artist I have seen, Feoflip’s unique style works really well for me. I do hope he returns to Bristol before too long.

2896. Hepburn Road (15)

Tucked away in a lane not usually associated with Kid Crayon was this rather unusual two-tone piece from July 2017. One of the things that I would often associate with Kid Crayon is his abundant use of colour, so this was something of a change.

Kid Crayon, Hepburn Road, Bristol, July 2017

My guess is that this was a quick one that was more for his own amusement than for public display. I love finding works like this, because they show another side of an artist and the range and diversity of their work. Without the signature, this would be quite difficult to identify as a KC piece. I’m not sure what the speech bubble says, but it looks like ‘wired’ to me. Does it refer to KC himself or to the character of the piece?
