Doors 115 – Street art doors are where it’s at!

I have been struggling to photograph new doors recently, I think that escaping the tiny area I have existed in during lock down has definitely contributed to this sorry state of affairs. I hoped all this might change with a short trip to Cornwall last weekend fishing with my son, but we didn’t visit any towns or villages, just fishing marks on the south coast.

The upshot… more archive street art doors, most never seen on Thursday doors before. Enjoy…

3057. Brunel Way bridge (47)

The walls and columns under Brunel Way have been a bit of a honeypot in recent weeks and turnover has been pretty high. As always it is pretty difficult to keep on top of it, but I can at least share some of the pieces I find. This one is from Benjimagnetic, who has only made a couple of appearances on Natural Adventures, but I have plenty more of his pieces in my archives.

Benjimagnetic’s style is quite unique and recognisable, but I find his wildstyle writing pretty much impossible to read. His ‘brush’ strokes and lines and blocks really identify the artist, in particular the yellow three-line decorations in this instance. Colourful and skilfully worked, this is a nice piece from Benjimagnetic.

3056. Brunel Way bridge (46)

Only a few days ago I posted my first Pl8o piece and said at the time there would be more to come. This is the second piece by the artist and I have more in the can, so I suspect that his work may become a regular feature in Natural Adventures.

The letters of this piece clearly spell out PL8O and are similar in style to his other work. The magic comes with the creative use of fills and shading which differ from letter to letter. I rather like his interesting black and white outline too. Somehow Pl8o’s pieces are rather easy on the eye.

3055. M32 Cycle path (65)

Kool Hand is at it again, this time on the M32 cycle path, with his colourful Orangutan. This piece is from a few short weeks ago and was sprayed alongside painting pal Daz Cat. It is a near copy of one he painted in Dean Land and which I posted recently.

As I pointed out with the Dean Lane version, Kool Hand is experimenting with decorated fills, which is interesting to see, because his USP to date has been to adopt clean solid fills for his characters. I am going to try and see another of his recent pieces later on today that he painted recently. Great to see his work developing.

3054. Cattle Market Road (5)

This is the fifth and final piece from the magnificent outdoor gallery in Cattle Market Road arranged by The Hass. it is by an artist I’ve not come across before, which should not come as too much as a surprise because he is a tattoo artist called Josh B.

It is immediately clear that this is the work of a tattoo artist, particularly looking at the bird, flowers and hand on the left. I can’t put my finger on why the tattoo style comes across so strongly, maybe the way the spray paint is used in the way that ink is, I don’t know. The piece is really beautifully painted and it is great to see the Bristol reference in the shape of the Bristol suspension bridge in one of the framed pictures. A lovely piece.

3053. M32 roundabout J3 (230)

Is it at all possible that this piece is all by one artist? Well not only is it possible, it is in fact true. The extraordinary piece is by extraordinary artist Taboo and is an old school/new school style split work.A piece like this really shows off the obvious talent of the artist in some style.

On the left hand side of the piece is a wonderful old school piece of wild style writing with a superb character smoking and sporting a fine red hat. The letter shapes, shading and fills are superbly done and appear to be being sucked into a contraption  converting the artwork into something altogether more modern.

On the right hand side, the piece is altogether more surreal and eclectic and perhaps reflects a more new school approach to graffiti writing. I have no idea what is going on here but there might be a clue to Taboo’s approach which is the little note at the bottom ‘find your own’. This is a really interesting piece from an artist who would seem to have had a new lease of life.

3052. Brunel Way bridge (45)

Annika Pixie has a style all of her own, not only in her artwork but in her free-spirited way of living her life. Her Instagram posts are an interesting insight into her extraordinary world. Her artwork always feels so fragile and ephemeral, but behind the these ghostly faces lie many untold secrets.

This column piece was painted during a paint jam organised by Skor85. Unfortunately I didn’t get to speak with Annika because she was just leaving as I was arriving, and by the time I had taken a few pictures she had gone. The piece itself is in my view a little haunting and feels a bit tinged with sadness.

Columns are quite difficult to paint and even more difficult to photograph, and I don’t think these pictures do the piece justice. Great to see something new from Annika Pixie, it has been a while.

3051. M32 roundabout J3 (229)

Here she comes again, the magnificent Pekoe with one of her eye-catching portraits. This one was painted recently during a weekend paint jam by the great and the good of Bristol. Pekoe is another artist who has been very active since the easing of lock down. We are getting very spoilt by our street artists at the moment.

There are several aspects of this piece that signify it as a Pekoe piece… the bright colourful face, big hair with beautiful patterning and a third eye that adorns several of her pieces. She has been an active supporter of the Black Lives Matter campaign and is orchestrator-in-chief of the RBF crew. Love this one.

3050. Dean Lane skate park (332)

A short while ago there were a few tribute pieces that appeared around Dean Lane for the graffiti writer Desire, of which this was one. This piece is by Dibz, 2Keen and Shade One, although I’m not too sure which bit the latter painted because the Dibz bit is obviously Dibz and the 2Keen character is obviously 2Keen. Perhaps he did the rest of the writing, I don’t know.

I don’t know much about Desire, but this is a fine tribute and I like the touch ‘Rest in Power’. It is so good to see Dibz so active at the moment, and I haven’t seen a new 2Keen piece for a very long time indeed. This is a high quality collaboration.

 

 

3049. Brunel Way bridge (44)

I haven’t seen nearly enough of Mr Draws this year. I know that his painting sprees go in fits and starts in a good year, but the disruption imposed by coronavirus this year seems to have impacted on Mr Draws more than on other artists. I was really pleased therefore to find this one by him under Brunel Way.

This is a simple enough piece, but the element that stands out for me is how effective the black shading is with the orange outline. This is a combination that tidies up the whole thing really well.

I am away fishing at the moment, in fact just about to head off for the Lizard in Cornwall, but am aware that Mr Draws has just painted another piece and hope it is still there by the time I get home on Sunday/Monday.
