4207. Greenbank (23)

Well, it turns out that I was rather lucky with these photographs on two counts. Firstly, I was lucky to catch up with Werm and Stika who were painting this wall as part of an LRS collaboration, 3F fino had also been painting but had gone home by the time I arrived. Secondly, I understand the collaboration only lasted about a day before being painted over… the law of the jungle.

Once again, Werm is working hard on his block letters, andI think he has smashed it with this piece. The rich blue colours are blended perfectly, but it is the stars running horizontally through the letters that steal the show for me, adding interest and a touch of class. The cloudy background is one that was shared by all three pieces in the collaboration. Some fine work from Werm (Eman).

For every piece that I post on Natural Adventures from Greenbank, there are probably a further twenty or so that never actually make it, which gives you some idea of just how many pieces there are on this long wall (hoarding).

This rather unusual piece, but all the better for it, is by Stika, AKA Apex_aloy, who has made a couple of appearances on this blog before. Everyday objects can be a surprising inspiration for artists, as this ‘camcorder’ seems to be for Stika. Another artist who is inspired by everyday objects is Merny, and both uses colour to the max. There is a charm about this piece, and an artist’s signature to be proud of. I’ll be on the hunt to find another Stika piece soon.

4126. Greenbank (21)

Laic217 has three or four main themes that he likes to return to. Most of his characters are skeletons, often spraying, but he has also painted a lot of melting faces and face distortions, of which this is a fine example.

This one is a newish piece on the long Greenbank wall, which surely only has a few more months left, as the development behind it seems to be moving with some pace now. The distortion is deliberately unsettling and challenging, especially as it is confined to the face and the hand with a spray can in it. The rest of the character is normal, so there is a lot of confusion and deception going on. I love Laic217’s creativity and mischief, and this piece ticks all my boxes. Beautifully executed too.

A few weeks ago Pl8o told me that he had a whole bunch of new designs ready to go, and since then I have figured that each new piece I have seen would have been part of this roll-out, including this beauty on the long wall at Greenbank.

If I am honest, I think that brown and orange are my least favourite street art colours, although if used to highlight or fill pieces they are not so bad. I suspect that this relates to a rather horrible pair of nylon pyjamas I had in the 1970s that were brown with an orange trim. Yuk.

I absolutely love the stylised letters that Pl8o has drawn up and the character is a very welcome addition, which I assume is by him too. All in all a very nice addition to his portfolio, just a pity about the colours (in my opinion).

Just because I haven’t posted anything by Turoe for a while, doesn’t mean he hasn’t been decorating Bristol’s walls, it is more a reflection of the sheer number of new pieces appearing every week in the city, and I don’t have the capacity to feature them all in Natural Adventures.

On the long hoarding at Greenbank, this is a rather luscious (or lush as we say in Bristol) chrome burner with a gorgeous red 3D shadow giving the letters real depth and lifting them away from the hoarding surface. This is a lovely piece of graffiti writing from a very accomplished artist.

Somehow, this piece got left behind in my ‘conveyor belt’ publication system of new pieces on Natural Adventures. I spotted the error and have corrected it. Bnie is one of the most consistent writers around. Her uniform and recognisable letters are always beautifully turned out, and her 3D shading designs part of her USP.

This piece, on the long Greenbank hoarding, is a joyful and colourful work. The bold letters and individual colours are perfectly set off with white highlights that give the letters a little bit of a lift. This is a tight and accomplished piece of writing.

Barely a week goes by when I don’t have something to post by Laic217. This piece on the long wall at Greenbank is an absolute gem and is painted in a rather cheerful assemblage of colours, although the subject is inevitably skeleton related.

There are lots of things we expect to see from Laic217, including the bucket hat, fabulously painted folds in the clothing, and the reappearance, after a long pause, of the brickwork glasses. I love the contrast between the grey scale characters and the colourful background. Yet another fine work from this highly talented artist.

Well, would you believe it? Yet another superb and crazy piece from Sled One. I have to say, I just don’t know where he gets his energetic creativity from, but it doesn’t really matter, just so long as he keeps turning out magnificent story pieces like this one.

Slapped up somewhere along the very long Greenbank hoarding is this monkey/orangutan/banana mash up that oozes class. There are several things that give this away as a Sled One piece, such as; the zigzag hatched eyebrows; elements of the piece that just hang, like the cigarette and the shading under the eyes; and the amazing use of colour and textures throughout the piece. This is outstanding work from an enormously talented artist.

I first posted about Eman on 20 December 2020 and since then I would think that he has been the most productive artist on the streets of Bristol, and although other artists such as Turoe and Hemper have had very productive pulses, Eman has been regular as clockwork and experimenting with characters and different writing styles. It is difficult to keep him off these pages, and I have dozens more of his works in my archives.

This is a lovely character piece featuring a young man contemplating a joint. In this piece, Eman uses an uncomplicated style of strong lines and solid fills to create a cartoon effect. There is not a lot in the way of shading, decoration or depth, but that is not important to pieces like this. I do know that Eman is constantly pushing the boundaries and striving to broaden his rage and improve his technique, and I am enjoying the ride. Great stuff.

While the quality of this extraordinary portrait piece by Rosalita (who has changed her Instagram from Rosalita to Rozalita) is unquestionable, the woman’s face disturbs me a little. The exaggerated features have a clown-like quality, and clowns are scary at the best of times.

Rosalita has associations with a travelling lifestyle and the circus or performance arts seems to have a profound impact on her paintings, most of which encompass a carnival theme. There are so many good things about the artwork in this piece, but it is the impact it has on me as a viewer that I value the most. I find it completely compelling.
