1697. St Werburghs tunnel (38)

Hurrah, it is great to find one of Laic217’s distorted face pieces, it feels like an absolute age since I last saw one, he has mostly been spraying skeletons and skulls of late, so this is a welcome return.

This is one of a pair of pieces sprayed side by side in St Werburghs tunnel in early August by the artist, and of the two I would say I slightly prefer it although both are excellent. I really do like his work, and for as long as he keeps putting them out there, I will continue to photograph them and write about them…if I find them. Those eyes!

1658. St Werburghs tunnel (37)

Oner has made his mark is Bristol lately with his rather attarctive burners popping up all over the city. This particular one was in St Werburghs tunnel, which is fast becoming a “go to” regular spot for me because the work there seems to be on an improving trajectory.

This burner is nice and clean and brings a bit of light into the tunnel. The black shading is nicely done, but I’m not too sure about the pink decorative squiggles.

1637. St Werburghs tunnel (35)

It would appear that when Inuk came to visit Bristol recently he may have painted two or three pieces. This is the second that I am posting, and the first that I found. I didn’t write about it straight away because at the time of taking the picture I didn’t know the artist.

The writing is big and bold and spells out INUcK, which I guess is a variation on his name. I very much like the little character at the right hand end of the piece, who offers a little additional interest and decoration on the work.

1635. New Stadium Road (5)

This spot is always impossible to photograph – I think the only solution is to come down at dusk and use a flash, and if I am honest I’m not sure I am fanatical enough to do that. The piece is, of course, by Deamze and shows off his angular puzzle-like wildstyle writing really well.

As is often the case, I am not at all sure who the character is, and think it might possibly be a figment of his fertile imagination. It feels strange, but of all the most productive Bristol artists painting at the moment, I still have yet to meet Deamze – our paths just haven’t crossed. I have a feeling he likes to keep himself to himself. Yet another consistently good piece.

1634. St Werburghs tunnel (34)

It feels like a while since I saw anything by Soge, so this writing in St Werburghs tunnel recently was a nice surprise. I think it was created during the paint jam which included a lot of PWA artists.

Soge, like Hire, uses a rather gothic style in his writing, which may be something they have brought with them from Poland, as it is not a style I see much of from any of the local artists. The letters SOGE are easy to pick out, although the lighting in the tunnel doesn’t really do the piece justice. Strangely I haven’t yet met Soge and so can’t really tell you too much about him.

I think I am in love with Tasha Bee’s work…there I’ve said it. I don’t know what it is about her style that presses all of my buttons, but there is something. Maybe it is the slightly 60s look and feel, maybe it is the colour palettes she uses, maybe it is the simplicity of expressions on her subjects or maybe it is that she does awesome collaborations with Face 1st. It is probably all of these and more.

This was one of two pieces I recently photographed in St Werburghs tunnel, lucky me, and each of them is equally good. The only dowenside is their location in the tunnel – the lighting is always so tricky. I think I might have got away with it this time…just.

Getting to know an artist and to become familiar with their style and content is all part of the fun of hunting street art. I have only seen three pieces by KiKi? and so far haven’t been able to find anything on digital media about them. In a way, knowing nothing is a great place to start because you can come to your own conclusions about the work without external influences creating any bias .

I can honestly say from my limited exposure to KiKi that I am very struck by their work. It all feels pretty organic and centered around animals and beasts of one sort or another. This piece looks like some kind of Chinese dragon breathing fire and has an archaic feel to it…something you might see on the side of a temple for example.

The light at the ends of the St Werburghs tunnel make it very difficult to get an evenly lit picture, but even with the poor quality of photograph, I think you can see that this is a fine piece of work. I need to try and find out more about KiKi.

1566. St Werburghs tunnel (25)

In a lovely sunny spot at the southern end of the tunnel in St Werburghs, this recent character by Silent Hobo has come to join one of his previous youths. Silent Hobo has been busy on the streets again and his work seems to come in fits and starts.

The contemporary young woman is dressed in ripped jeans and yellow sneakers and her vest sports the word ‘legendary’. In all his works, Silent Hobo conveys enormous warmth and empathy for young people, but I feel that there is an element of sadness in his characters – maybe it is their closed eyes and slightly downcast demeanour.

1555. St Werburghs tunnel (24)

I am suffering a little from Draws withdrawal (see what I did there?) because it has been 45 posts since I last wrote about him. He or I must be losing our touch. This piece, at the end of St Werburghs tunnel, hence the light differential, is a cheerful quick one using an interesting patchwork style to fill the letters.

I really like the colour palette that Mr Draws has used for this and the way he has managed to distribute the colours in a way that pleases the eye. What I like most about Mr Draws is how utterly in love with his craft he is, and it comes across in his work.

What a lovely piece this is from the great Fiva in the depths of St Werburghs tunnel. It is a clever piece that lifts itself out from the wall with superb shadowing in black and dark green.

I’m not sure whether it is the silhouettes or the font , the colours or the expert shading, but I really admire this piece, which is a bit strange, because it is not necessarily my natural leaning. One of the pleasures of hunting out street art is coming across something that makes you feel really good. This is one of those. Thank you Fiva.
