2387. New Stadium Road (17)

Oh I really hate the light in this bridge/tunnel it is almost impossible to get decent pictures of anything, especially near the edge of the wall. Even though the picture doesn’t do it justice, I still felt it was worth sharing this recent collabortation between Decay and Ryder with you.

Decay as you know already is simply smashing it out of the park with every piece he does at the moment, and although the general shape of his writing is reasonably consistent from piece to piece, the colour palette and shadings and backgrounds continue to amaze.

I haven’t posted anything from Ryder for a while now, even though he has painted quite a lot recently, no reason, it just hasn’t happened… I’ll have to raid my archive and unlock a few I think. This small part of the collaboration hosts a couple of Ryder’s trademark character ‘Rs’ one of which is shooting laser beams across the whole thing.

These pieces are two of a larger collaboration which included Tasha Bee and T-Rex (to follow).

2383. Dean Lane skate park (238)

It would seem that Rezwonk and Decay are inseparable at the moment, they are churning out so many exciting and vibrant collaborations this summer. Some of these display a common theme used by both artists or some like this, one present two very different pieces side by side.

On the left is a colourful Rezwonk piece of writing, that is reasonably simple in concept – different coloured letters with melting drips, but complex in its execution. How on earth would you start such a piece? I’m not entirely sure the white ‘dusting’ works though, if anything it looks like someone has tried to obscure the piece… it might have been better without.

Then on the right is the Decay piece which shares only drippiness with Rezwonk’s. In all other aspects the writing and colour selection could hardly be more different. It is rermarkable to think how much Decay’s work has come on over the last twelve months or so. Perhaps a quick squint at his updated gallery will give you some idea of the progress made.

2378. St Werburghs tunnel (91)

I really do wish that Kleiner Shames had never left Bristol for the lure of London, but I suppose that is where the work and opportunities are. However, it is so good that roughly two or three times a year he returns to Bristol and leaves one of his distinctive pieces as a gift to all of us that admire his work.

Although taking pictures in St Werburghs tunnel is a nightmare, some pieces transcend the quality of the picture, and this in my view is one of those. The letters spell out FOIS (time in French), and for a long time I thought that was the name of the artist. I don’t remember how I met him, or discovered his name, but I do remember buying a couple of pieces of art from him when he was clearing out his studio to move to London, and they are treasured possessions indeed. 2375. Lawrence Hill roundabout (11)

I met Rezwonk for the first time last week, and what a pleasure it was too. He was actually painting a piece at the M32 roundabout (to follow). Our conversation was brief, because both of us had to rush off. I also met at the same time another Bristol ‘hunter’ who goes by the Instagram moniker @bristol.graffiti and it was a real pleasure to meet her too (and if I am honest I has assumed incorrectly that she was a man before I met her, stumbling into the perils of unconscious bias once again). The anonymity that digital social media affords is a double-edged sword.

As ever, this piece by Rezwonk is sharp, creative and really demonstrates the artistic talents and range in his locker. The red and white combination (a personal favourite of mine) works exceptionally at the end of this dark tunnel – other colour combinations probably wouldn’t have the same impact. Nice work once again. Very, very prolific at the moment.

2367. St George skate park (1)

I have been meaning to get down to St George skate park for some time and finally a week or so back I made it and was rewarded with a whole ton of art that I had been aware of but thus far not seen. It was beautiful weather on the day I went to the skate park and it was incredibly busy, so I had to dodge pre-teens on their scooters, skateboards and bikes to get these pictures.

Regulars will know that I love the work of Fiva (Fiver), and although this one is a bit worn, it has all the hallmarks of a great piece from the artist. The cartoon character on the right sets the whole piece off nicely and the writing in seven colour tones ranging from green through to lilac and wonderfully worked, with an urban skyline depicted with the darkest shade of purple. A really lovely piece. I love his little shout out to Nightwayss (who has peppered this spot with pieces) at the bottom right too.

2365. St Werburghs tunnel (89)

Another fine piece of writing from Diced Mango on the entrance to St Werburghs tunnel. This, so I understand, is likely to be one of his last works in Bristol for a while as he is moving away from the city for a while. That is a pity for us, especially as his work has been on such an improving trajectory of late and it has been fun seeing his work develop.

This piece has a rather cold and sugar-sweet/confectionary feel to it. His letter shapes are nice and ‘bouncy’ and the three colour layers are nicely finished off with drips and dots. A decent piece of writing.

2358. Dean Lane skate park (237)

I was lucky enough to catch up with DJPerks when he was just finishing off this small piece. He really is quite modest, and doesn’t talk much about his own artwork, and still manages to drive around taking pictures of other people’s street art.

This is a nicely designed quick one with a vanishing point right in the centre of the piece. Although I haven’t seen much of his work, and have only posted one before this one, I do like the way he mixes it up each time, playing with the letters PERKS, each piece original. It’ll be interesting if he continues along this path or whether, like some artists he’ll sttick with one basic design.

2350. M32 roundabout J3 (154)

Decay is one of the most featured artists in Natural Adventures at the moment on account of his incredible productivity and I dread to think what his monthly paint bill must be. I mentioned in a recent post that his work is getting better with each new piece and that trend is continuing. I think that he is reaching a new level and although my expectations are raised, he is largely exceeding them with each new work.

This beautiful piece is part of a collaboration with Rezwonk (to follow) on one of the long walls of the M32 roundabout. There is so much movement and animation with the explosions and decorations that the whole thing is a feast for the eyes. It is not that long ago that Decay confined his work largely to a palette of red, greys, black and white, what a contrast with the hugely colourful work he is producing now. This is another gem from the man.

Getting lucky is all part and parcel of photographing and recording street art. I remember when I first started out I never thought I’d actually meet an artist (I naively thought it was all done under cover of darkness) let alone watch them at work. Over the last five years I have met countless artists and would consider myself friends with several of them. One who I met for the first time a week or two back was Subtle, and what an astonishingly nice bloke he is.

Subtle, whose work first entered my consciousness in about 2016, is an artist who has eluded me until now and whose work just seems to be getting better and better with each piece. While I watched him doing this piece (distract I ought to say) he let me into a whole load of tips on technique, the most memorable of which is that he uses a roller and emulsion for the bulk of his work (most of what you can see above) and saves the spray paint for the details. The reason for this approach is driven by cost – a wall as large as this one would cost quite a lot if it was all done with just spray paint.

I really enjoyed my twenty minutes in the company of Subtle and am pleased that I managed to get a reasonably clean completed picture (in spite of Soak and Young’s intervention) a few days later. For sure, this is one artist I’d love to catch up with again, and now that he has moved more centrally in Bristol I think the chances of that happening are greater than before.
