2655. Turbo Island

Here at Turbo Island we have two Mutatee faces for the price of one. One has been painted over while the other had been stuck to the wall more recently at the time I took this picture.

On the left the face is almost invisible, especially from a distance as it blends into the wall. What is rather comforting is that both of these little faces will probably be here for some time and undergo reasonably frequent facelifts whenever the wall is repainted.

The more recent face on the right has retained its vibrant blue colour that we have come to know and love in Bristol. I have now found quite a few of these little installations, but am rather hoping that there are plenty more to find.

2654. Richmond Street (2), Weston-super-Mare

More from JPS in his home town, with this delightful young gladiator stencil. I don’t know the back-story to this piece, but there surely is one. The young bespectacled gladiator is holding up a keyboard for a shield, is this a metaphor? Is the boy hiding behind his technology? Is the character someone we know, a famous person?

As ever the stencil is stunningly well executed and the quality is really noticeable in the detail on the keyboard. If you are a fan of JPS’ work then a trip to WSM is an absolute must, and part of the fun is in finding these stencils dotted around the town.

2653. High Street, Weston-super-Mare

 

Since acquiring a dog two years ago, I have managed to turn taking him for walks to my advantage, visiting street art hotspots in Bristol and beyond in the name of exercise duty. One such ‘walk’ was in the form of a day trip last summer that he and I took to Weston-super-Mare. Here he is photobombing a fabulous Yoda stencil by JPS. The dog actually only makes rare appearances on Natural Adventures despite being with me for most of my photography sessions.

Having just seen the final film of the Star Wars saga, it feels appropriate to post this piece at this time, and JPS has as you would expect turned out a masterful piece he has. The pictures are a bit bleached out, an artefact of me getting used to photo editor and not making a great job of it.

Incidentally, the dog pee on the Yoda was absolutely not the work of my animal, he has far too much respect for street artists.

2652.Dean Lane skate park (269)

Here is another piece from earlier this year by Flava136 in Dean Lane. He is an artist I have been aware of for a fair while, but the infrequent bursts of activity have rather predicated against posting his pieces regularly, especially if these pulses coincide with lots of other new pieces.

Flava136’s monsters share some characteristics with those of other artists such as Nol and Nevergiveup, and I guess this all boils down to adopted techniques, such as long tongues or white spots on the eyes.

I feel I have missed a trick a bit by not getting to understand more about Flava136 and his work, but have plenty more to look forward to I’m sure.

2651. Sevier Street

This wonderful piece by Andy Council on Sevier Street on the entrance to a ‘green’ food market has been around for quite some time, but I just never got round to photographing it until this ‘car shot’ in July this year

Andy Council is Bristol personified and his works record the magnificent landmarks of the city and presents them woven into the form of an animal, in this case some kind of beetle. When one thinks of Bristol murals, Andy Council is always front of mind.

2650. St Werburghs tunnel (124)

Not exactly a Christmas Day kind of piece, but one I photographed in the tunnel of St Werburghs way back in July this year and have only just got round to posting because… well just because.

It is a rather nice collaboration between Soap (a regular on these pages) on the left and Bad Taste on the right. Soap was undergoing something of a renaissance during the summer and seemed to be churning out bright and happy pieces of which this is a super example.

I know nothing about Bad Taste and can only think that he/she was a visitor to Bristol who’d hooked up with Soap to find a cool place to paint. The rat is really nicely painted and stood out from the crowd in the tunnel for quite some time I seem to recall.

Now get back to your turkey (or vegetarian alternative) and enjoy the rest of this joyous Christmas Day.

2649. Greville Road (10)

Happy Christmas everyone. For those of you reading this at some point in the future, this post was published on Christmas Day 2019. Well what a sensational piece from Bil Giles for what I am guessing was an Upfest Summer Editions contribution that I photographed late and have posted very late.

The brilliantly colourful piece is typical of Bill Giles’s monster design style, and a little less grotesque than some of his past work. I just don’t know how this one slipped through the net, but for those of you suffering the wettest December ever, ever in the history of the Earth I bring you a ray of sunshine (albeit overcast sunshine) from July 2019.

2648. Dean Lane

This is the bit of Dean Lane that is the Real Dean Lane, that runs around the skate park. In fact this mischievous bunny rabbit by Nevergiveup is outside the Bedminster swimming baths, and although it has probably been there for an age, I only recently saw it.

This is one of many that I still have in my archives, and barely a day goes by when I don’t find a new one somewhere or other, so plenty more to come even though the artist no longer lives in Bristol. Rabbit, rabbit, boing boing, rabbit rabbit, boing boing…

2647. Frogmore Street (10)

Despite this being one of the closest walls to my work, it has taken me an inordinate amount of time for me to get round to photographing and posting it. Tucked away in Frogmore Street, just below a Banksy, this is a fabulous mural from RichT.

I didn’t see it at first, but towards the right of the piece is a Spider-Man hanging upside down in this fantasy environment. Sensational colours and weird and wonderful shapes combine to create a little masterpiece on the side of this night club. Nice work from RichT.

2646. St Werburghs tunnel (124)

Another orange piece in the orange setting of St Werburghs tunnel, this time from ‘Mr consistency’ Rusk. As I would expect from the artist this is a beautifully worked and tight piece that probably disguises the effort put in, as I know that Rusk is something of a perfectionist.

I particularly like the way the wavy fill in the bottom half of the letters is continuous despite the breaks, demonstrating some great ‘cutting in’ technique. In recent weeks Rusk seems to have favoured the tunnel – perhaps something to do with the dismal wet weather we have been having.
